Some Notes from the Officer’s Meeting

Gene and Rosemary Gerlach were in an accident and are doing well after both were in surgery. The Gerlachs are the parents of Fr. Matt Gerlach. Please keep him in your prayers.

The Madonna House Project has been a success. As Christmas approaches, we can still use donations. We will be taking more stuff out after the next business meeting on December 3rd.

The Council 4721 Christmas Party is set for December 13th. It will be at the Hall, there will be a Pot Luck (the Council will supply the meat) and, of course, Santa Claus. The time will be confirmed later. Mass may be offered but that will be announced.

Running of the Rose – Ken Neal took the first rose at Mannford, followed by Paul Dudley, Lon Unsell, Jim Williamson, Leroy Weisman, and Bill Hull all walked a mile each heading west.

Lon would like to get a committee together for a 51th Anniversary Celebration for the Council. 4721 was founded in 1959. It will be January 9th.

St. Catherine’s Knights Council will have a 2nd and 3rd Degree this Sunday, November 22nd.

Priests’ Appreciation is coming. We will be working on a time frame for the dinner. Leroy is great for getting the Bishop there. January has been the usual time but, this is a bit late to schedule it then.

Ladies Appreciation, is usually around Valentine’s Day so what better than the 2010 Ladies Appreciation to fall ON Valentine’s Day! We will be looking to schedule that in February, Valentine’s Day is a Sunday.

Tomb of the Unborn at Calvary Cemetery. Phil is spearheading this through his councils to make a donation in the name of the man who will be doing the work to restore the statue and the plaque for the Tomb of the Unborn.

The Oklahoma Knights of Columbus State Convention will be in April and hosted by the Stillwater Council.

November 29th will be the next Blood Drive.

November News

Grand Knight’s Report
The Halloween Party was a great success! A special thanks to the Ladies Auxillary and Bishop Kelly students for helping set up and carrying off a great party. The ladies decorated, arranged the food with the kids help as well as the kids carrying off the entertainment on the Scare Ride.
A thanks to all the participated in the 40 Days for Life Garden of Hope.
January 30-31st, 2010 will be the State Knights of Columbus Bowling Tournament – See or email Lon if you would like to participate.
We also had some old faces appear at the meeting this month! Welcome to our “NEW” old faces! Welcome back!
Catholic Charities is finally moving into their new facility, any help from our Brother Knights is appreciated. Give a call to Catholic Charities to find out what you can do to help our Tulsa Diocese apostolate.

Wednesday, November 11th, will be the Running of the Silver Rose. Our Council will be ‘running’ from Mannford to Yale, Oklahoma.
From the KofC Supreme Council Website, here is what the Running of the Silver Rose is all about:
A full week of Knights of Columbus events in Phoenix, including the 127th Supreme Convention, the Marian Congress and the lively Guadalupe Festival, was launched on Sunday (Aug. 2) with the presentation of the Silver Rose at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral.
A symbol of the unity among peoples in the Americas, the rose had been carried over the course of months from Canada and through the United States.
The presentation in the Phoenix Cathedral at the 9 a.m. Mass was one stop on the long journey in the annual Knights of Columbus event known as the Running of the Silver Rose.
The rose is also a symbol of the Order’s commitment to the pro-life cause, and Our Lady of Guadalupe is claimed as the patroness of the pro-life movement. The rose’s final destination is the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12.
In the opening procession of the Mass, the rose was presented by members of the Columbian Squires, the youth group of the Knights of Columbus. Carrying the rose was Esteven Wetzel, a member of St. Mary’s Squires Circle #5000 in Phoenix. He was accompanied by fellow Squires Paul Taylor and Devin Morales.
The Squires were chosen for the honor because the annual Running of the Rose was started more than 50 years ago by members of the Columbian Squires.
“I think it is pretty cool to get to participate in keeping this tradition going,” Wetzel said before Mass. “I know the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and I think it is amazing. Also, I am a pro-life person. I pray in front an abortion clinic with my pro-life group. I think it is an honor to represent the pro-life message with this rose.”
Celebrating the Mass was Father Paul Sullivan, director of vocations for the Phoenix Diocese. He told the congregation that the rose, which was placed before the cathedral’s large image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, was “a sign of our commitment to the protection of all human life.”
The Silver Rose will be a part of the celebrations at the Guadalupe Festival on Saturday, Aug. 8, when some 16,000 people are expected to fill the Jobing.com Arena for an afternoon and prayer, song, witness talks and intercultural exchange.
For 50 years, the Knights of Columbus has sponsored the Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Program to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of America. The purpose of the is to honor our Lady of Guadalupe and to reaffirm our commitment to the sanctity of life.
This past May, three Silver Roses left Ontario, Canada, and have been traversing the United States by a Western, Central and Eastern route. In November, all three Roses will come together in Laredo, Texas, to travel over the International Bridge and be delivered to Knights from Monterey, Mexico.
The Western Rose, traveling south through the Mountain States, is the one that arrived in Phoenix.

Council 4721 to Cover 40 Days for Life

On October 16th, from 11 P.M Friday night to 4 or 5 A.M. Saturday Morning, Council 4721 will be covering the 40 Days for Life prayer garden in front of the Planned Parenthood in Tulsa. We need volunteers to cover these hours. Currently, we have 11 pm covered. Please email Lon with the time you will volunteer for.

St. Pius has signed up to cover the 24 hrs starting from October 16th, Friday morning 7 A.M. to October 17th, Saturday morning 7 A.M.

If you can help us from  that would be great.

This fall, our community will once again be uniting with dozens of other cities across the U.S. for the largest and longest coordinated pro-life mobilization in history – the 40 Days for Life campaign.

People of faith are praying that this effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion.

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign that has generated measurable lifesaving results in more than 130 cities where it has been implemented. Some locations have reported as much as a 28% drop in local abortion numbers and hundreds of new people getting involved in local lifesaving ministry efforts. The 40 Days for Life campaign is made up of three key components:

- Prayer and Fasting: inviting people of faith throughout our city to join together for 40 days of fervent prayer and fasting for an end to abortion

- Peaceful Vigil: standing for life through a 40-day peaceful public witness outside Reproductive Services, the abortion facility in Tulsa at 6136 E 32nd Place

- Community Outreach: taking a positive, upbeat pro-life message to every corner of our city through media efforts, church presentations, petition drives and public visibility

Learn how you can “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” here in Tulsa by contacting campaign directors Erick Bell and Tracy Callicoat at (918) 307-4939 or familylife.office@dioceseoftulsa.org.

Abortion Mandate in Health Bill

Urgent Pro-Life Alert

July 22, 2009

Abortion mandate in health bill

The healthcare reform legislation currently before Congress contains an abortion mandate that is a grave threat to human life. The bill's language will result in federally mandated abortion coverage by nearly all health plans, recruitment of abortion doctors into local health networks, and the nullification of many state laws that place reasonable limits on abortion.

The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) has called this legislation the "largest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade."

We urge you to write to your senators and congressman today. Click here where you can learn more about the health legislation and send a message to your two senators and congressman.

To read a letter from 19 House Democrats who insist they will not support a health bill unless it explicitly excludes abortion, click here .

Time is of the essence as congressional leaders want to pass the bill in the Senate and House by the end of July.

A coalition of prominent pro-life leaders have arranged a Stop The Abortion Mandate live webcast for the public this Thursday, July 23rd, 2009, at 9 PM Eastern (8PM Central, 7 PM Mountain, 6 PM Pacific).

Please go to www.stoptheabortionmandate.com to register.

Our blood drive on July 19 at St Pius X was a great success! We set a new standard of donors (24) which was 33% more than our previous high.

Eleven Knights (J. Arroyo, Mike Canfield, Bob Caruso, Scott Collier, Bill Hull, Pat McAuliff, Tom Metzler, Jim Miller, Matt Soerries, Mike Soerries and Jim Williamson) donated as well as three Knight family members (Cheryl and Mike Hull and Susan Stackler).
We plan to build on this success and have an even better turnout at our next drive on September 27th.
Thank you all for your gift of life.

Veterans' Mass
Each month, a handful of 4721 Knights (Lon Unsell, Leroy Weismann, Paul Dudley and Bob Caruso) travel to Claremore to join several other council Knights and ladies to accompany VA Hospital Catholic veterans to mass.
Fr. Eichhoff of St. Cecilia is the celebrant and holds the service in the hospital’s chapel. The service is held at 9:30 on the second Thursday of each month. Some of these veterans have few outside visitors and are very appreciative of our visits. Contact any of the above members to join our carpool to Claremore.

Clarifying FlockNotes

As a clarification, flockNotes is a means for the council to send out notices of meetings or events to the membership. This is, really, just what it says, a note. This is not used to send long emails, it is for reminders. Tonight, for example, I sent out a notice of the business meeting. On other occassions, I have sent out reminders for the Blood Drive, etc.

Gentlemen,

As previously noted, today is my last day on the job as Assistant District Marshall for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. It has been my pleasure to have served in this capacity for the Order.

The Honor Guard at each Assembly, should be functional by following existing rules and regulations. The FN for each Assembly, is responsible for the Honor Guard. All requests concerning the Honor Guard, are his responsibility. The Dress Code, is his responsibility.

I have one suggestion for FN's, and that is to only consider HG requests when at least 4 HG's are committed. If a HG request is taken with 3 or 2 HG's, and one has to back out, that leaves an HG detail that will just not look good for the Order.

Partners in Catholic Education

Following a tradition that has gone on over half a century, the Knights of Columbus and St. Gregory's University in Shawnee, OK, Oklahoma's Catholic University, have officially partnered together to encourage students to enroll in our university. This partnership also allows dependents and family of Knights to be eligible for a $2500 scholarship. This is in addition to any other scholarships they may already receive.

Coming to a Council near you...

The staff of St. Gregory's University and monks of St. Gregory's Abbey are on the road now, spreading the word about the Oklahoma Knights' and St. Gregory's new partnership. Don't miss your chance to speak to a university representative and/or member of the monastic community about Partners in Catholic Education. Click on the calendar link below to see these presentation dates and times.

Gentlemen,
As previously noted, today is my last day on the job as Assistant District Marshall for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

First Degree Team and Council Appointments

At the Officer's Meeting, we identified members for our new 4721 First Degree Team. In the past, we have had an active 1st Degree team (our incoming DGK, SK Arroyo was a member with Rob Rauner in years past!). The new team will be manned by:

Lon Unsell, Bill Hull, J.A. Arroyo, Michael Arroyo, Leroy Weisman, Bob Caruso and Arthur Barber

Also agreed upon were some of our new chairmen for the fraternal year ending in 2010.
Bob Caruso will be the Program Director for the Council. Under him will be:

Thomas Perry will probably be Youth Activities Director.

Thanks to our Brother Knights for stepping up to the plate and taking charge of these worthwhile activities. There are still Chairman positions open as well as committee positions for our Brother Knights to fill.

Please talk to Bob Caruso, Lon Unsell, or J.A. Arroyo about filling some of these worthwhile Council Activities!

Archbishop Beltran Has Stroke

Many of you already know that our previous Bishop, Archbishop Eusebius Beltran, had a minor stroke this past weekend. He is doing very well and is expected to make a full recovery. He is not allowed any visitors at this time and is to have complete rest. Bishop Beltran left the Diocese in 1994 to take the Cathedra of Oklahoma City.

The Knights are requested to pray for the Archbishop's full and speedy recovery.
Fraternally,

Ernest Chastain XS
