What to Do if You Are Involved in an Automobile Accident
By Fairfax County, June 2002
Last year, there were over 19,000 reportable accidents in Fairfax County and over 13,000 non-reportable accidents. Here is a checklist to assist you if you become the victim of an accident:
- Stay calm.
- Check to make sure that you and your passengers are all right.
- If another vehicle is involved, check to make sure those individuals are all right as well.
- If anyone on the scene of the crash requires immediate medical attention, call 911.
- Call the police (911 or 703-691-2131) if there is extensive damage to the vehicles or if someone is injured.
- If your vehicle is blocking traffic or is presenting a hazard (and can still be driven), move it to the side of the road.
- Exchange information with the other driver: name, address, home and work phone, license plate number, year/make/model of the vehicle, the name of the insurance company, and the policy number.
- If there are witnesses, get their names, addresses, and phone numbers.
- Get the name of the police officer as well as the ambulance personnel that responds.
- If you are hurt or shaken up and need help getting home, call someone to pick you up.
- Call your insurance company when you get home.
- If a report is written, you can pick up a copy at the closest police station after five business days, provided you show photo identification.
Remember to buckle up whenever you get into an automobile!
