Do not disclose any personal information (SSN, credit card account number, name, address) to any stranger who calls you. New credit card scams crop up all the time with a common theme-at some point, you have to provide personal information to a stranger over the phone, or dire consequences will happen. Their pitches are compelling, and in a new wrinkle, they may even precede their call with a phony official-looking mailed document.
If there ever were a reason for a legitimate investigator to contact you about problems associated with your credit card or bank account, the investigator would already have your personal information. You have no reason to verify who you are by giving out personal information to a stranger over the phone.
If you receive anything that you feel you need to respond to involving an investigation related to your credit card, you should only contact the number on the back of your card. If you believe you are being scammed to provide credit card information, either through the mail or a phone call, contact SCAM Alert at 1-800-637-2676.
