Bathroom Remodeling
By Case Design/Remodeling, January 2001

Many homeowners feel that they have limited options when it comes to making their bathrooms appear larger.  But this may not be the case.  There actually are many things that can be done to open up a bathroom and five it an airy, luxurious feel, without increasing the square footage.  Here are a few suggestions that can help give your bathroom a spacious feel.

Windows, Mirrors, and Lighting.Wall-to-wall mirrors can give the illusion of a larger space.  Enlarging existing windows or incorporating glass block are other options for lightening up the look.  Recessed or halogen lighting also can brighten the room.
Colors.White fixtures and neutral colors are popular when trying to open up those smaller spaces.  If deeper colors are desired, they can be used as an accent, so as not to close up the room.
Storage.Reducing clutter always is appealing.  Custom built-ins can be used in place of cabinets to open up the square footage.  Extending the vanity top over the toilet (banjo top), and adding cubbies in the shower to hold soaps and shampoos are other clever ways of adding more usable space to the room.
Tiles.Removing mudset and thinset tiles from the wall can help dramatically.  The use of larger floor tiles or CORIAN(r) also are great ways to open up the area.

By following a few simple ideas, a bathroom can be transformed into an inviting and bright space without ever increasing its size.
