Editing

I accept editing jobs on a free-lance basis.

I prefer large projects such as annotating a manuscript with detailed editorial suggestions as a step towards publication or submission to publishers or agents.  Depending on the genre, my comments consider concerns of organization, plotting, character development, narrative technique, style, clarity, consistency of language, grammar, and syntax.  I prefer to work directly with a hard copy, commenting in the margins.  At the end, I type up a final report detailing my assessment of the book's strengths and weaknesses followed by a list of specific, prioritized proposals for how it could be improved.  As a way to decrease the expense, some clients prefer to have me mark up the first third of a manuscript in detail, then simply read the remaining two third's before moving on to the final report.

I have experience editing popular and juvenile fiction, literary novels, short stories, literary nonfiction, and religious literature.  Naturally, I am more comfortable in certain genres than others.  I strive to be straightforward about what I think I can or cannot offer.  References available on request.

I can also edit letters, web pages, manuals, menus, newsletters, etc...  I am willing to directly rewrite certain business documents or personal correspondence, although not academic prose or original works of art.

Most editorial work can be accomplished long-distance.

Process and Rates:

For freelance editing, I charge approximately $25 per hour.  A rule-of-thumb estimate (before I see the actual manuscript) is $3 per page for larger projects, $5 per page for smaller projects.  (First pages and chapters always take more time than later chapters.)

With large projects, my preferred process is to mark up a single chapter and then meet with a client (in person or by phone) to discuss my comments and confer about process, goals, expectations.  Afterward, should we both choose to continue, I am happy to either bill at an hourly rate, or on the basis of a contract.  Given the time investment related to large projects, it is important to me to take on only those that both interest me and that seem viable for eventual publication.
