How to prepareThere are several things that you should check before coming into the studio. 1:
Make sure that your instruments & accessories are in
proper working order. 2:
Check that all your cables work without ground hums or loops. 3:
Make sure there are no Hums, buzzes, rattles, or other sounds
that don’t belong on the recording. 4:
Plan out all your effects associated with your instruments,
like guitar effects & keyboard settings. 5:
Replace your strings on your guitars a couple of days before
the session & break them in before the session.
new
strings will stretch & go out of tune frequently until
they are broken in. Bring extra strings!! Some people have
been known to put
their brand new strings in boiling water to stretch them a
little before putting them on their instruments. Of course make
sure they are dried COMPLETELY to avoid any rusting. 6:
Take the time to tune the drum heads (both
upper & lower heads!!) 7:
Check the drums & hardware for squeaks, rattles, &
other sounds that don’t belong, i.e. the bass
drum pedal and the Hi-hat pedal,
Head lugs, cymbal wing nuts, & any other type hardware
associated with your session. 8:
It will help to know what tempo you want your material played
at, especially if we are using a sync or click track. 9:
It’s good idea to have notes on all your material,
arrangements, lyric sheets, chords, leads, etc. I don't care
if you have sung the songs 3000 times, bring the arrangements.
I will want them to track & punch-in the songs with you
& you just might have a lapse of memory once you start
tracking the tunes.
