A bank robbery takes place near the Global News garage in
New York City and shortly after, Ken and Sandy scare off a
would-be thief who appears to be looking for something in their
convertible. But what ? The boys travel back to Brentwood where
Pop assigns them to cover the auction at Jed Pollard's farm. While
doing so, Sandy and Ken are accosted by three strangers, at
gunpoint ! While thwarting their nefarious motives Sandy notices
that one of the gunmen wore a silver cufflink in the shape of a
scorpion. This is reported to Chief Andy Kane and it's importance
is seen later in the case. These same 3 villains, Chet, Dan, and
Vic, again capture Ken and Sandy, along with Bert. They are taken
to the "boss", Frank, where they are interrogated about
the location of an envelope that had been hidden in their
convertible. But they don't have it and don't know what is in it.
Then Ken blunders by seeing that the boss is really Frank Thorne,
a notorious criminal, who can't allow the three youths to live,
knowing his true identity.
When the gang leaves to retrieve the mysterious envelope,
Ken, Bert, and Sandy bend all their efforts towards escape. In an
agonizing manner this is accomplished, just as the criminals
return. A phone call to Chief Kane is desperately made in the
hopes of deliverance. While awaiting succor the boys play a game
of cat and mouse with Thorne, Randall, and the rest of the gang.
The resourcefulness of Ken and the two Allens becomes readily
apparent and Kane arrives in time to mop up. With the help of Pop,
the sleuths discover the importance of the envelope and the
stencils therein., bringing a satisfactory conclusion to "The
Clue of the Silver Scorpion".
