Naval Facility Adak Alaska |
|||
|
Established 01 December 1962 Decommissioned 30 September 1992 Returned to Wet Storage 1997 Adak Alaska is a mountainous island of volcanic origin with the Aleutian chain. The island was unoccupied prior to the latter part of 1942 when the United States developed an air base to counter Japanese occupation of Kiska. The Naval Facility was commissioned on 01 December 1962, and was located on the U.S. Naval Station. The island of Adak is about twenty-five miles wide and thirty-five miles long with a very irregular coastline which varies from broad beaches to sheer sea cliffs. A treeless island, Adak is carpeted with tundra, a foot high grass with a spongy base. These environments provide a home to many native birds and fish and combined with introduced game, a sportsman's paradise. The U.S. Navy has pulled out of Adak and the island has been turned into a commercial port. |
