Serious injuries led to a painful hospital stay and a long convalescence at home. Her doctors expected Loretta to live her life unable to walk. But Loretta spent her months in the hospital organizing a new business to replace the 30-year office career that had ended with her fall. In 1991, Loretta's daughter convinced her to
attend a sculpting workshop. Like most artists, Loretta knew as soon as
she touched the clay that this was HER medium. She began sculpting an old
man's head and by noon on the first day of the workshop, she was hooked.
She had discovered a way to bring the people who had been wandering
through her imagination for years to life! For many years, she had created
dolls using available molds. And even though her dolls had great
personality and were exquisitely finished, Loretta was not satisfied.
Sculpting the faces she saw in her mind and felt in her hands was the
answer to her artistic prayers and every one of them reminded her of Santa
Claus. Loretta's company, LKM Originals, specializes in Santas and elves of all sizes; with faces Loretta "finds" in the clay. Weather-beaten, age-softened, wrinkled with wisdom and kindness, Loretta's creations have the faces of angels. And they're wearing bits and pieces of life collected from antique shops and estate sales across Kansas. Every Santa has his own beautiful unique costume, with embroidery, velvet, fur, flowers, and toys. Loretta fell in love with Santa..you'll fall in love with Loretta's Santas too! |
