I had the pleasure of riding on one. The univercity of P.R. had one that was donated to their Marine Biology department. This was almost 45 yrs ago. What surpriced me the most was the power and speed displayed by this boat. Since that day I had dreamed on riding once more on one.
I cant afort one, so I am building one radio controlled. One in to the ft. My PT Boat will be 80 inches long, with only two gas engines. I am still looking for a good detail blue prints and, pictures for details. Jose

I have always felt I was born 20 years to late as I read about the PT boat assignments in the south pacific during WWII. I would have loved to have served in that heroic effort. I just recently visited the PT309 display in Fredericksburg Texas. Keep up the good work...if you need any help taking care of those boats, let me know!!

I know what happened to the P-T Boats they were given away, with all due respect a couple of them should have stayed behind to be put in a Navy Meseume. I'm sure John F. Kennedy would have liked that. If they were put in a meseume where is it located. The P-T boats was one of the most effected weapon the Navy had, I served 9 years in the Army and my dad was an airplain mechanic, he was one of them guys that kept the B-17 flying in world War two.

My father said no he wasn't but my mother still said he was. My Uncle name was Virgel Harper. I am trying to find out which is true. I would like a list of names that served with John F. Started wooden boat building several years and have always had an interest in PT Boats. Recently my dog chewed up my remote control "monster Truck" and instead of throwing it out I am salvaging the servos to provide thrust and steering for an MTB. The project is complex but should be fun. Found this site looking for profiles, lines, and overall dimensions. Thanks alot for sharing the history!

Ken,
I really enjoyed your web site. It was very informative. My dad, Dick Miller, was in your Squadron 35 on PT512. I could not believe it when I saw the picture of him- it gave me goosebumps! My dad died 14 years ago and we don't know much about his Navy years. Do you have any other pictures from his boat? It would also be great to hear from anyone who knew him. Thank you for the picture. It was an unexpected surprise.

Ken,
Quite by accident, I discovered your site and found a picture of my father, Dick Miller of Lovington, IL. Dad was a Gunner Mate 1st Class in your squadron on PT512. Dad passed away in 1987 and never mentioned his years in service much. Your site sure fills in some of the blanks of what he went through. Is there anyway to get a list of who was on PT512. How would one go about contacting any of these men? How do veterens feel about getting calls from old service buddie's kids??
Thanks,
Bill

His Name was Earl Chauncy Peterson and servered as a gunners mate 1st class on PT356. I don't know if any of his buddies are still alive but if they should read this or if you have any info on his boat or shipmates please E-mail me. I have always had the utmost respect for those that served in WW2.
My dad too, was in the Navy. He was stationed on Saipan. I was
appalled by an inaccuracy recently aired on "The History Channel"
wherein it was stated that WW2 era PT boats had Packard Diesel
engines. I knew this to be false and went in search of the facts. Thank
you for providing a vital resource and link to an age during which my

Just doing some history research. I am presently assigned to IBU-28 Kingsbay Ga. (inshore patrol boat unit) we are a reserve unit. Our boats are presently 27' w/2 Volvo penta 200hp dual prop engines. Our armement is mostly crew served weapons (some exceptions) We are part of Naval Coastal Warfare Group2. We do harbor defense, escorts, security and other missions. Because there is no active counter-part in the active Navy we are called to duty more than most reserve units. Thanx for the History and service =:)

Why do I read stories about WW 2 ? I think I read about those times for a couple of reasons. First, it gives me an idea of what it was like for my Dad, even if he was in the air corps in the South Pacific flying B-25's.
Second, I enjoy reading about a time when Americans were respected for serving their country. Not like it was for so many Viet Nam GI's.

Great site! Several things sparked my interest in PT boats. Found a copy of a book called "They Were Expendable" by WL White (Penguin Book) cover price 25 cents.
I believe this copy was printed in 1945. (belonged to my dad)
Also, recently visited the antique boat museum in Clayton, NY (Thousand Islands/St Lawrence Seaway) Incredible museum, over 100 wooden boats from canoes to 70' mahogany yachts.
No PT boat there, but they do have several Packard V-12's on display. Wow! I'm an aircraft mechanic and helicopter pilot, and the Packard V-12 looks like it came out of a P-51 mustang.
By the way, this museum is a must see. They give antique boat rides in the summer, and for 45 minutes we were zipping around the 1000 Islands in a mahogany Kris Kraft powered by a Chrysler big block. I can only imagine what it must have been like to open up those Packards!
Great site and a special salute to those who served on the Navy's "expendables". CW2 Matt Hobbs

I hadn't realised fighting occurred so close to Jersey CI (occupied by the Germans during the war). PT509 was the subject of a Radio Jersey interview this week, discussing a documentary being made about PT509. The wreck has been visited and filmed recently, and an American nicknamed Bos (Boswell?) was kind enough to visit Jersey to tell what he knew about this boat and what actually happened at the time it went down. You are so right when you say stories like this must be told, so that we can all appreciate at what price our freedom was gained.

Hi - I happened upon your site while doing some research for my father, who spent most of his WWII days as a "crash boat" skipper off the coast of Florida. Towards the end of the war, he was transfered to PT boats and skippered boat 364. He is just now starting to write about his experiences and enjoys reading other war time PT accounts.

Was looking for info on the Utah invasion. It seems over nine hundred young men were slaughtered while undergoing training for this invasion. There was to be a destroyer and some other types of support to suppress any German attack or interference. My great Uncle Champ Libla was killed during this and I am searching for facts about this invasion. thank you

I am an avid boater. I've owned boats for 20 years and have always had a fascination with PT boats. It started with the TV series McHales navy, and continued until now. I love reading about the mechanical aspects such as the engines. I have a 470 horsepower motor in my 27' boat. Any additional information that you think I would enjoy would be greatly appreciated.

Whatsup? I got to your site from a link on the ptboats homepage. I am on the crew of the S.S.S. (Sea Scout Ship) NORTHLAND, and we opperate a 73' (Desil) ex-Navy sounding boat built for the detection and identification of undersea craft. Sea Scouts is a program for boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 18 to teach them how to safely sail or handle a ship. Our ship is located in the San Francisco bay area, which has the largest amount of Sea Scout Ships in the United States. The size of these ships range from 42' to 180'. one of the ships in our fleet is the LIBERTY, a 95' PTF from the Vietnam war (PTF-26 to be exact). I've always been interested in PT's and PTF's and I just came across your site. Elco 80' that was slightly modified to sleep more crew would make an ideal Sea Scout Ship. Great site.

Dear Kenneth,
I am Arthur N. Barnes oldest son, Steve. My father never talked much about the war so my family and I are very happy you took the time to write the history. There is just my younger brother, Pat, and I left from the family as my father died in 1995. Thank you so much again. We appreciate it.

Hi Ken - I am Lt Arthur N Barnes's granddaughter. I am doing some geneology research, and we were going through grandpa's papers when we found The Story of the PT518 that you gave him years ago. I jumped on the internet after that, and found this sight. I am thrilled to see the picture of him on the website. He didn't talk a lot about his experiences in the Navy, and so any information I can get about him during that time is fascinating to me.If you have any other information, or know some other websites or people to talk to, I'd love to hear it. Thank you again for your wonderful documentary. It means a lot to me to have this information, as grandpa is not here to ask. Michelle Barnes Garza
