GENE RODDENBERRY, 'Great Bird of the Galaxy'.......

"We must remember that the promise of tomorrow will not be fulfilled easily.  The collective commitment of our nations, as well as the vision, wisdom and hard work of many - many individuals will be required to bring our dreams to fruition.  In a way, the Enterprise and the optimistic future in which it exists, might be thought of as a reminder of what we can acheive when we really try!!!"

Gene Roddenberry's ashes will finally be where his dreams have always taken him --- into space!!!!  Through Celestis, Inc., a Houston-based company pioneering the 'Ashes-to- Stardust' Program, a pegasus rocket containing a two-pound canister will be launched from under a L-1011 aircraft.  The rocket carrying Gene Roddenberry's ashes in a capsule,  will follow a trajectory over the Canary Island, three-hundred miles above the Earth.  Gene's  capsule will acheive orbit where it will remain for between 18 months and 10 years.  Eventually, as the orbit degrades, the capsule will descend into the Earth's atmosphere for its' final, spectacular disintegration.

Gene Roddenberry, writer, film and television producer, led a life as colorful and exciting as almost any high-adventure fiction.  Born in El Paso, TX, on August 19, 1921, his family moved to Los Angeles when he was three, and there he spent his boyhood with his brother, Bob, and sister, Doris.  After High School, he studied three years of college pre-law and then transferred his academic interest to aeronautical engineering and qualified for a pilot's license.

He volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps in the fall of 1941 and was ordered into training as a flying cadet when the war began (1941-46).  As a 2nd Lieutenant, he was sent to the South Pacific; he took part in 89 missions and sorties, and was decorated with the Distinquished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.  While in the South Pacific, he began to write.  Upon his return from combat, he became a crash investigator for the Air Force working out of Washington, D.C. (1946-49).  During this time, he also studied literature at Columbia University.
