Accomplishments (biographical information):
James T. Kirk entered Star Fleet Academy at the age of
17. He finished in the top 5 percent of his class. Initially
he majored in Interplanetary Relations and later switched to the Starship
training program. While a cadet he participated in the Axanar Peace
Mission. Ensign Kirk aboard training vessel, U.S.S. Republic, prevented
a near-fatal explosion; and was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant.
At age 21 he reported to the U.S.S. Farragut for his
1st deep space assignment. An initial survey of Neural occurred and
James had his first encounter with the cloud creature on Tycho IV during
which time he received a Commendation for Bravery. Lieutenant Commander
Kirk (age 27) went to destroyer, U.S.S. Alexander. His first command
position happens here because a Klingon encounter
causes the Captain's death. While here he is awarded a Medal of Honor
and promoted to Captain. This Captaincy leads to his replacing Fleet
Captain Pike at age 30 (becoming the youngest academy grad to be a Starship
Captain), as the Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise,
NCC-1701. The Enter- prise experiences a very successful , historic,
five-year mission (2264-2269) where it...seeks out new life and new civilizations
and boldly goes where no man has gone before. Here he renews and strengths
his relationship with longtime friend Dr. Leonard McCoy
(Chief Medical Officer), and begins a new friendship with
Mr. Spock, the Vulcan 1st Officer/Science Officer
(all three become close).
After
this first Enterprise mission Kirk is upgraded (by three ranks) to Admiral,
and is assigned to Star Fleet Headquarters, Earth, as Chief of Fleet Operations.
Admiral Kirk returns to Enterprise Captaincy for the V'GER threat in
2271. It is believed that he commanded a second five-year mission aboard
Enterprise after successfully solving the V'GER incident. He then goes
back to the Academy as a Staff Instructor.
In 2285, active duty comes again when Khan Noonien Singh
hijacks the U.S.S. Reliant, research vessel, which he used to steal the Genesis
Device from the Regula 1 Space Laboratory. Khan was the leader of the Genetically
Engineered humans found aboard the sleeper ship S.S. Botany Bay in 2267.
Spock is killed during this incident, but he has planted his
katra in Dr. McCoy, and because of this Kirk hijacks the Enterprise
to the Genesis Planet to reunite Spock with his katra and return Spock
to Vulcan in a Klingon Bird of Prey. At the planet the Enterprise
must be destroyed to avoid it getting into the hands of the Klingons (who
also kill his son, Dr. David Marcus).
Three months later, while returning to Earth (in the
Klingon ship) to face the consequences of Spock's rescue, a planetary
distress signal is received which warns of an alien probe that is destroying
the Earth and rendering every ship in it's path useless. Kirk and his
remaining crew time travel back to Earth's past (1986) to bring two humpback
whales. These whales are dropped off in San Francisco Bay and are able
to tell the probe what to go do with itself. After the probe departure
the trial is held and Kirk is reduced in rank back to Captain and is given
command of the 2nd U.S.S. Enterprise,
NCC-1701-A.
After a brief vacation in Yosemite Park (on Earth) with
Spock and McCoy, James returns to active duty to solve a terrorist crisis
on Nimbus IV. Control of this new Enterprise is lost to Spock's
half-brother Sybok who forcefully proves that we can go beyond the Great
Barrier (at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy). The creature that
was found kills Sybok and Kirk regains control of his ship after another
brief encounter wiht the Klingons. In 2293 Spock 'volunteered' him
for a diplomatic peace mission concerning the Klingons whom he still resented
for the death of his son. Unfortunately, the Klingon Chancellor Gorkon
is murdered and Kirk and McCoy are wrongly arrested, jailed, and sentenced
for the murder. Under Spock the Enterprise comes to their rescue and
then with U.S.S. Excelsior's (under the command of Captain Sulu) help destroys
the culprit Cloaked Bird of Prey which actually was involved in the murder;
and ultimately saves the Khitomer Peace Conference.
