This particular series was a leap of faith for the
producers of StarTrek that nobody was sure would make it. Well, it did, for
seven seasons, IT DID!!! As you can see by the pic of Deep Space Station
9 above, it is not a starship (stating the obvious, of course). It is a Space
Station, not unlike Skylab, Mir, or the new ISS that is still being built
by NASA and the world. Anyway, it is a
station orbiting a planet called Bajor and the reason it was built is because
of the only known stable wormhole in the galaxy that is nearby; which leads
to the Gamma Quadrant. Their ship is called the Defiant (see below).
Even the makeup of the individuals (above left) is
mixed. DS9 is controlled by the UFP and run by them
with cooperation and assistance from Bajor. The Starfleet personel consist
of: Captain CDR Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), who lives on board with his
son Jake (Cirroc Lofton); Second Officer Lt. Jadzia Dax (Trill joined species)
(Terry Farrell); Worf (transferred from 1701-D in
firth season) (Michael Dorn); Dr. Julian Bashir (Siddig El Fadil - changed
to Alexandar Fadil); Chief Engineer Miles O'Brien (Colm Meany); and a Bajoran
Liaison Officer, First Officer Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor); and Security
Chief Odo (shapeshifter/Founder) (Rene Auberjonois).
