Press Release * 05.18.08

This was sent into the Caswell Messenger:

And so a new church is born. This baby, three months in the making, named Covenant Reform Baptist Church. The announcement was made Sunday, May 18, by Dr John Carpenter, pastor.

On February 24 of this year, a group of about 25 believers decided to meet together and soon set aside three months to explore the possibility of a new church in Caswell County. So what happened in the three months? The group decided that if another church is to be formed, it must have a clear reason for its existence. And that reason is stated succinctly in its slogan: Reformed, Multi-racial, Active. On May 18, Dr. Carpenter announced that they are now committed to forming the new church. He announced that Mr. Joe Scruggs would be the first elder, besides himself and asked those interested in committing themselves to Covenant to sign their intention of being a new member.

“Reformed” explains CRBC’s theological stand. Simply put, Covenant holds to the doctrine that no person can desire God or seek after Him unless God himself first changes the person on the inside. Also, the church is committed that such matters as the worship service and membership be organized according to scripture, not tradition or pragmatism.

Multi-racial describes CRBC’s vision of it composition. “Covenant,” says Pastor John, “is to be made up of people united not by the color of their skin but by the commitment of their heart to Jesus Christ. Sunday morning should not be the time where America is most segregated but the time where American Christians can declare that a common love for the same Lord can break down all the walls of enmity.”

Finally, Covenant pledges to be active, to be a church actively trying to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to the community around it. While every Christian has a different gift and may be in different seasons of life, every believer should use his gift, in some way, to work towards discipling the nations beginning with Caswell County. These are the values that the members of the new church are covenanting themselves to hold to. Hence it is a “Covenant” Church.

How did this three-fold vision play out in the three months? Again Dr Carpenter: “It was clear to my wife and I early on that we have an unusual caliber of people united in the same vision. He is also drawing others to us, from different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Not being an effusive person, I decided that the way we can show our commitment to this band of brothers and sisters was to buy a house right here in Caswell County.”

In the last three months, CRBC previously called Covenant Fellowship, had been involved in the outreach with Creatures of Creation and Spring Fling. It also worked with Beulah Baptist Church to reach kids during Beulah’s Fun in the Park. Each Sunday, CRBC has a kids and teens program from 4:00 p.m. About 50-60 kids and teens come for a time of fun and Bible teaching.

The new church meets at the gym of Caswell County Parks and Recreation Dept. Beginning June 1, Sunday School will meet at 9:00 a.m. and worship at 10:00. Those interested in finding out more about the new church can contact Dr Carpenter at 514-0736 or Elder Joe Scruggs at 388-5603 or check it’s web-site (under construction) at www.covenantcaswell.org.
