Updated August 2006
This project is dedicated to my father, Wendell Hanson who called North Dakota his home at one time. He passed away at age 40, well before I had embarked on any genealogic efforts. We are descended from some of the original settlers of Mayville, ND. The effort has been a bit cumbersome as I reside outside of New Orleans, LA. My second trip to Mayville took place one month after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. The trip was originally cancelled because of Katrina, then a reschedule was cancelled because of Hurricane Rita. The previous summer's scheduled trip was cancelled because of Hurricane Ivan. I have been told to never schedule a September ND trip.
During this effort, GPS co-ordinates were taken. The master plot map was viewed as well as the master log book for the cemetery. Relative positions of plots and gravestones were measured. Gravestones were photographed. Photographs are not posted on this site as I do not know if the family or loved ones of individuals at this cemetery would want the photographs published. Additionally, that would take up a considerable amount of web space. If the pastor and the board deem it appropriate, I may upload those photographs at a later date. As weathering continues, I suspect my photographs may be the best record of some of the fading inscriptions which were once chiseled with considerable emotion and thought. As my Norsk can barely be called adequate, I have not been able to transcribe all stones. There a few un-addressed stones and names, so please bare with me as I attempt to complete this project.
I hope this effort helps genealogic investigators who might want information but can't quite get to Mayville or need to research or plan a trip before they go. Of course, if any readers find any mistake, please let me know and I will attempt to verify and correct. You will notice on my spreadsheets that I have notes and comments which are things I noticed about the stone. I use them to help me identify and prompt me about certain features.
There are some folks I would like to thank. First, my wife Pam who let me go north and supported my efforts while she took care of our gang at home. Jason, who accompanied me on my trip, shared the experience and contributed to the work involved. Chellie, his wife. Arlene, who I serendipitously met on both occasions. Wendell, who provided valuable documentation. Edith at MSU who guided us to the right people. Lastly, to the kind people of Mayville who seemed to be ever-present.
My GGG grandfather (Andrew Hanson Molden) was a charter member of Gran Church.
