Kansas Firefighters' Museum
Care of Collections
Over the years, the Kansas
Firefighters' Museum had accumulated many, many boxes of paper in the form of
scrapbooks, photographs, newspaper clippings, log books and other items. They
were poorly protected and mainly not cataloged.
In 2007, the museum received a grant from the Kansas Humanities Council to preserve and organize the collection. |
Professional advice helped guide volunteers in doing the job right. |
The Wichita Fire Department provided work and storage space in an active fire station. |
All the items were examined and evaluated. |
Photographs received special care. |
The collection was organized and cataloged so items could be easily found. |
News items were carefully removed from old newspapers and placed in protective covers. |
Items of special interest were copied, bound and made available for general use. |

After processing, materials were indexed and placed in acid free containers. |
