Bill Chester’s name first appears in the Kansas State Horseshoe Pitchers state tournament results in 1971. It appears many times thereafter. Although “Bud” mainly played in the mid divisions of the tournaments he entered, Bill did play in the Championship Class in the State Tournament in 1978. However, “Bud” Chester is most widely known for his involvement in horseshoe promotion as the Tournament Director for many years for the Leavenworth Horseshoe Club. He ran many tournaments in Leavenworth over the years and promoted the sport through his work as a teacher in the local school system. “Bud” Chester also served the Kansas State Horseshoe Pitchers Association as the Secretary-Treasurer of the KHPA from 1975 through 1980. During these six years, Bill was the tournament director for the state tournament and oversaw a membership growth during his term in office. Bill also served the KHPA as its President in 1986 and 1987. Bill’s son, John was also a horseshoe pitcher and won the Kansas State Junior title in 1982. “Bud” was famous for his notes of congratulations to the winners of various tournaments and also notes of encouragement to those who needed it. After retiring from teaching, Bill has served as a local pastor at various churches in Kansas. For his long work as a tournament director, state officer, and friend to horseshoe pitchers everywhere, Bill “Bud” Chester was elected into the Kansas State Horseshoe Pitching Hall of Fame in 1996 as a promoter.
