A pioneer of women’s horseshoe pitching in Kansas, Emalene Pearce won the first women’s state title in 1975 and followed that with 9 more titles. In her 14 appearances in the state tournament, she had one 2nd place finish and three 3rd place finishes to go along with her 10 titles. Emalene threw a flip shoe from the women’s distance of 30 feet and was a tough competitor. Several of her titles came even when someone else had a higher ringer percentage but Emalene won the key game to claim the title. Along with her husband, Earl, and another horseshoe pitching couple, Eddie and Mary Clark, Emalene traveled the long distance to Eastern Kansas from Garden City to participate in many local as well as State Tournaments. For many years, Emalene was a “snowbird,” residing in Arizona during the winter and Kansas in the summer. Following the 1988 season, Emalene moved permanently to Arizona with Earl so she did not defend her title in 1989. For her accomplishments in the women’s division, Emalene was inducted into the Kansas Horseshoe Pitching Hall of Fame in 1987. A summary of her Kansas State Tournament results follows.
