A tall man from central Kansas famous for wearing his straw hat, Herb Schroeder was the main force in the formation of the Mid-Kansas horseshoe league. This league consisted of teams from Marion, Hillsboro, Goessel, Walton, McPherson, Newton, Moundridge, and Hutchinson and was a great promotion for involving horseshoe pitchers in the game in central Kansas. Herb was responsible for the building of horseshoe courts in Hillsboro as well as serving as tournament director for several local tournaments there. The 1975 State Tournament was held at Hillsboro due to Herb’s efforts. While never a championship caliber player, Herb loved the sport and was quite active, even after his eyesight deteriorated and he could barely see the stake. Herb still competed by painting the stake white before every game and making sure the background was dark so that he could make out where to throw the shoes. For his dedication and love for the game of horseshoes and his tireless promotion of the sport in central Kansas, Herb was elected into the Kansas Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in 1978 as a promoter.
