Local tournament directors and club officers can sometimes be overlooked for their importance to the sport of horseshoe pitching. That certainly cannot be the case for Topeka’s Wayne Shelinbarger. Wayne has been an important figure in horseshoe pitching in the Topeka area for a number of years. Wayne has served the Topeka Horseshoe Club as its President as well as the Tournament Director for many years. He also was primarily responsible for the care of the Topeka courts that many pitchers feel has the best “mud” for pitching, not just in Kansas but around the Midwest. Due to his untiring efforts in watering and caring for this “mud,” Topeka’s courts always presented the opportunity for few ringers lost and high averages being produced in tournaments. Wayne served the Kansas Horseshoe Pitchers Association as its Vice President in 1985 and 1986. He also received the Harold Hutcheson Award, presented to the person selected for outstanding achievement in the promotion of horseshoe pitching in Kansas during that year. His wife, Jeri, also supported Wayne by doing the office work for the Topeka tournaments as well as traveling with him to many local tournaments and several World Tournaments. For his service to the game of horseshoes in serving as local tournament director, caretaker of courts, and state officer, as well as his long-time love of the game, Wayne Shelinbarger was elected into the Kansas State Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in 1988 as a promoter.
