Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 4, 1961):
Founded in 1884, this was one of the first large off-reservation boarding schools for Indian students established by the Federal Government. It served students from the southern Plains and upper Midwest; in 1965, it became Haskell Indian Junior College. Due to the number of modern buildings on campus, the NHL consists of 12 structures and buildings, and is not an historic district.

Condition:
While the "no build" option of the Environmenal Impact Statement for a proposed South Lawrence Trafficway project has been chosen, the college continues to propose alterations and new construction that adversely impact the NHL resources, and resources not currently part of the NHL, but which may be eligible. Construction of a field house, as proposed by the college, will have an adverse effect on the historic landmark.

"The Federal Highway Administration chose the ""no build"" option in the Environmental Impact Statement for a proposed South Lawrence Trafficway project."
