THROWING AND GRAPPLING 1) Body throws 2) Projection throws 3) Leg throws 4) Pressure point grappling 5) Defense against throwing 6) Wrestling techniques 7) Ground fighting ANIMAL STYLE TECHNIQUES Based on the movements and/or characteristics of certain "martial" animals, such as Tiger, Praying Mantis, Crane, Dragon, Snake, etc. The term "techniques" is a global term specifying self-defense. These techniques are defenses against specific attack For example, at the Yellow Belt level the student will learn Son Mak Soo, defense against grabbing the wrist. Each of the techniques in Son Mak Soo are designed around a single attack, that of grabbing the wrist. There are eleven in this set alone. In order to be promoted to First Degree Black Belt, Jyo Kyo Nim, the student must learn over 226 of these techniques. There are over 370 techniques necessary for promotion to the rank of Second Degree Black Belt, Kyo Sa Nim, among other requirements. Even more so for Third Dahn, Pu Sa Bum Nim, and Fourth Dahn, Sa Bum Nim. There is a wide assortment to these techniques. There are techniques for defense against grabbing the writs, clothing, throat, and torso. There are techniques for defense against attacks from the front and from behind. There are techniques used specifically in grappling and techniques for fighting when on the ground or sitting in a chair. The vast majority of these techniques utilize empty hand attacks, however, there are many used with weapons as well, e.g., rope, cane, fan. The Kuk Sool practitioner memorizes these techniques to perfection until they are executed smoothly and quickly, without effort and without hesitation. The two primary aspects to self-defense techniques are Joint Locks and Pressure Points. Combined, these two aspects make it possible for a small person to defeat a much larger opponent and gives Kuk Sool Won a reputation for being very versatile.
