Stranded on a Desert Island?
One sunny Saturday in the park with Erica (I think it was the fourth of July) the conversation turned, as it often does, to music and film. The critical question was:
If you were banished to a desert island for the rest of your life and could take only five records and five movies with you, which would they be?
My first thought was to include among them wilderness survival videos, guides to edible wild foods, etc., but for the sake of the question we'll assume that all your survival needs are taken care of and these are for pure pleasure and whatever other benefits you currently derive from music and film.
Careful consideration was given to the fact that many records lose their charm after repeated listening so it was risky to choose anything new and untested by time.
These were the results:
| MUSIC | FILM | |
| SIMON: | Chopin piano concertos | Rushmore |
| Abbey Road (the Beatles) | The Princess Bride | |
| Kind of Blue (Miles Davis) | Amelie or North by Northwest | |
| some Indian classical music | The Big Lebowski | |
|
O.K. Computer (Radiohead) |
2001 or Last of the Mohicans |
|
| ERICA: | Kind of Blue (Miles Davis) | Raising Arizona |
| Passion (Peter Gabriel) | Rushmore | |
| Revolver (the Beatles) | Stealing Beauty | |
| Buena Vista Social Club | The Princess Bride | |
| Kid A (Radiohead) | The Empire Strikes Back | |
So now it's your turn. Select your five movies and albums. Be very careful: as soon as you select them, the genie will whisk you away to banishment, never to be seen or heard from again...
