2/4/10 – Skybolt Project For Sale - in Pineville, LA.  This was a flying airplane when donated to the EAA Museum in Lakeland FL.  It has a low time frame and low time Lycoming 0-360, 200 hp engine with an inverted oil and fuel system.  When we got it we took the cylinders off and had them checked out and honed at an aviation machine shop.  We replaced all hoses.  This unit has spent most of it life in a climate controlled museum.  We have converted it from open cock pit to bubble canopy, could easily be converted back.  We have cleaned and scuffed it for painting and it needs some other TLC.  We have over $20K invested plus our time.  Must sell and will sacrifice at what the engine and prop are worth. No log books.  Sell for $12,000 firm.  Will be glad to email pictures to interested parties.  Call Jim @ 318-451-8204 or email at jmoody@he-equipment.com

1/27/10 – 2010 Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series - The survey results are in and there will be a Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series in 2010.  We had 174 responses which I thought was great and they were overwhelmingly in favor of having the fly-in series again.  What is overwhelmingly?  How about 97.1% said to do it again!  You can click HERE  if you want to see the detailed results.  Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond.  We are currently in the process of selecting dates.  The dates that have been selected so far are on the LaFlyins.com calendar.

1/27/10 – Reunion of Cary Salter and his P-51 Mustang - It’s been a long time coming, but finally Cary “Half Ace” Salter’s WWII P-51 Mustang is ready to go.  On Saturday, January 30, at 10:30 AM he will be reunited with his airplane after a 65 year absence.  He is still married to the airplane’s namesake after 65 years and with some luck and lots of prayers she will be there also.  Please come to the Aero Jackson Hangar at Hawkins Field in Jackson, MS, for this wonderful event.  Also please spread the word to anyone that you think may be interested.  They want a big crowd to help Cary and Charlotte celebrate.  Click HERE  for additional info on the event and a bio on Salter.  For more information contact Dan Fordice at dkf@fordiceconstruction.com or 601-636-5807.

1/27/10 – T-34 Down in Lake Pontchartrain A Naval training T-34C went down north of Lakefront Airport on the evening of Saturday, January 23.  The student was rescued a couple of hours after the crash but the instructor is still missing and presumed dead.  Click HERE  for additional information from The Times Picayune.  Click HERE for a later update.

1/27/10 – Houma EAA Chapter Hosts Airport Field Trips When you go out to the airport do you see a lot of young people out there taking up aviation?  The members of the Houma EAA Chapter didn't either.... but they are doing something about it.  They have arranged with some of the local schools to do field trips to the airport... and it looks like from the video done by The Daily Comet they are doing an excellent job.  Click HERE to see the video.  Thanks to Chapter 513 President Tim Rochel (unfortunately the newspaper changed his name to Ted in the video), Newton Boudreaux, Rick Winter, Jerry Gonsoulin, and all the others that made this happen.  Keep up the good work!  Click HERE for an article on it as well.

1/17/10 - Concordia Airport gets $300,000 Grand for Hangar - From the Concordia Sentinel
The Concordia Parish Airport Authority has received a $300,000 grant for planning, engineering and construction of a 10-bay T-hanger building at the airport, which once built and leased should generate an additional $1,400 monthly in revenue.
Airport Authority chairman Carl Sayers said Monday he received the news from Danielle Gaylor, Program Manager of the Louisiana Department of Transportation Aviation Division.
Located within one mile from Vidalia's growing industrial park and two miles from the Vidalia Mississippi River port project, Sayers said the airport's business is growing.
He said the leasing of its main hangar is the airport's primary source of income and is limited to its current nine-aircraft capacity out of a total of 17-aircraft currently based at the airport.
He noted that there are several aircraft owners and businesses in the area that will lease hanger space to locate and operate their aircraft from Concordia Parish Airport once the additional space is available.
"These individuals and businesses will be bringing their aviation business dollars to Concordia Parish by making fuel purchases and providing additional lease revenue to the Airport Authority that will be used to make additional improvements and help maintain the airport," said Sayers.
A new 4000 gallon automated credit card type 24-hour fuel pump system has recently been installed at the airport and is adjacent to the existing T-hanger building site. Sayers said this system provides convenient re-fueling capability for all tenants utilizing an automated credit card reader similar to those of an automotive fueling station. He said fuel sales revenue has increased more than 160 percent in the first year.
The planning, bidding and construction time of the T-hanger building is estimated to take about six months. The hangers should be in operation by third quarter of 2010.
Sayers said the Concordia Airport has already received 100 percent federal & state funding in 2005 in the amount of $498,000 which was used for engineering and construction of the support taxiways, access ramps and building site for the purpose of future construction of the proposed T-Hanger Building.

1/11/10 - Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series 2010 Survey - I think that most of you have heard about the Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series.  I am the "self-appointed" coordinator and the Louisiana EAA Chapter Presidents are the Board of Directors.  The series participation was significantly down in 2009 in all aspects - number of events, aircraft attendance, registrations, sponsors, prizes, etc.  This could mean that interest is waning.  It could also be due to many other factors like the economy, weather, etc.
The series began (again) in 2003 so we just completed our seventh year.  It was started to help commemorate the Centennial of Flight (have to thank Brian Capone and Lisa Cotham for initiating that effort).  At that time flying activities in Louisiana were at an all time low.  We also had no real sense of aviation community or communication networks.  Things have changed dramatically over the last several years.  Now there are flying activities on almost every weekend and multiple ones during the spring and fall.  We have grown communication networks with weekly emails of activities.  There are websites like  LaFlyins.com, AOPA, EAA, that all provide event calendars and news.  We are now flooded with information.  All of that has been made possible by all of us working together.  The main thing is that we now have several flying activities.... plus we also know about them so we can participate.
So all of that now creates a question.... is the Louisiana Fly-in Series still needed or has it served its purpose?  For example, if Pineville is going to hold a Spring Fly-in (and they are - its already on the calendar), will more people attend because it is part of a fly-in series or do all they need to know is that there is one and they will come?
The fly-in series was the first state fly-in series in the country when it started.  It is still the only one seven years later and we are justifiably proud of our accomplishments.  It is a lot of work for me but more so for the groups that hold the events.  However, they will continue to do that hard work when they hold their event with or without the series.   I don't want to do extra work if I am just going through the motions.  Does the fly-in series make an difference?  To answer that question, please click on the following link to complete a very brief survey.  It will just take a couple of minutes.  The deadline is Friday, January 22nd.
            http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ QCMSNZD
Based on the results of that survey, we will decide on how to proceed. Thanks for your input. I will let you know what we are going to do by the end of January.

    Jim Riviere

1/11/10 - Natchitoches Fly-in Photos on Website Hello Aviators,

I wanted to let you know that photos from Natchitoches' November Cane River Aviation Rendezvous fly-in are now up on the website at:  www.CaneAviation.com.  The home page contains an insightful video (upper right) and photo gallery links located towards the bottom.

We had a perfect 80 degree day (we're all missing that now) for our inaugural event.  The Rendezvous received tremendous support from fly-in participants, Natchitoches area attendees and local business involvement.  The event benefited the Boys and Girls Club, Humane Society, Lions Club and N.F.D. Food Drive.  Everyone attending had a wonderful time seeing all the warbirds and vintage aircraft, enjoying the presentations, Kid's Hangar activities, and dancing at the Big Band Hangar Dance.

If you're looking for a new place to rendezvous with aviation friends and aircraft club members, why not hold your own group fly-in at our Rendezvous event?  We have plenty of space to group your aircraft, fun weekend activities and entertainment, and the historic town of Natchitoches with its wonderful shopping, great dining and romantic B&Bs - all less than 2 miles from the airport.  What could be more perfect?  Watch the website video to learn more about the endless possibilities.

Share this email and website information with other aviator friends and club members, then contact us at CRARinfo@aol.com to start planning your group fly-in activities and accommodations.  We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Safe flying and all the best to you in 2010.

1/11/10 - St. John Airport Lighting Project Update -St. John Airport is undergoing a major lighting project. This is an update of airport status:

1. PAPI'S on runway 17 and 35 are out of service.

2. We have no lights and Airport is open for daytime operations only.

3. Runway 35 has a displaced threshold of 1,000 feet.

4. South taxiway closed.

Starting at 8:00 AM on Monday January 11, 2010, we will close the entire runway until, Friday January 15, 2010, at 6:00 AM. At this time the 1,000 ft displaced threshold will be switched from runway 35 to runway 17.

Near the end of January 2010 and a good part of February 2010, we will close the entire runway again, to complete the work on the runway lights. This is a tentative plan which could change. The plan is to have the airport open every weekend from Friday through Sunday.  We will make every effort to keep everyone informed. PLEASE CHECK NOTAMS!!   We are sorry for the inconvenience, however the end results will be well worth it.  Any questions call  Rick Moran at 985-536-1999.

1/4/10 - Update on Doug White - Does the name Doug White sound familiar?  He is the Louisiana pilot that took over and landed his King Air in Florida when his pilot died.  Click HERE to see what he has been doing.  As an aside, he has also signed on as a volunteer pilot for Louisiana's own Pilots for Patients and should be flying his first mission soon.

1/4/10 - Louisiana Broker Needs Aircraft - I have a unique opportunity for a couple of aircraft owners to sell their aircraft to pre-screened and qualified clients. My client in Malaysia that is purchasing the Cessna 152 also needs a Piper Archer. The Archer must be 1978 or newer, low time engine, very good paint and interior, and have digital radios or GPS.  His United States agent will be arriving to pre-buy and take delivery of the Cessna 152 within the next 5 days.  If someone has a really nice Archer that they want to sell and meets the qualifications, that may be a quick sale. In addition to the Archer, I have a United States client that is looking for a Piper Turbo Arrow with low time engine, excellent paint and interior, and digital avionics. Another opportunity for someone to have access to a pre-screened, qualified, motivated buyer. Pre-screened, qualified, motivated buyers don’t come along every day.

Thanks!

12/31/09 - Louisiana Company Makes Seaplane Safety Video - From Alabama Aviator - http://www.alabamaaviator.com/

Ultimate Seaplane Safety Training Video

Floatplane flying is possibly the purest form of aviating but can be unforgiving for the inexperienced and worse for the whimsical land pilot with a new rating.  Lyle Panepinto, owner of Seaplane Safety Institute, has developed the first intensive training course that enhances seaplane pilot proficiency as flight safety school does for professional pilots. His school is also making waves with a nod from aircraft insurance companies with possible premium reductions for those who graduate from the course.

Southern Seaplane was started as a family owned charter business by Phil Panepinto in 1954 just outside New Orleans to service gulf oilrigs. It soon expanded to include maintenance, air tours, island fishing trips, sales and training. Lyle Panepinto, who grew up in the cockpit beside his father Phil, has more hands on experience on floats than most pilots; he grew the business into one of the largest commercial seaplane operations in the country.

While attempting to hire qualified commercial floatplane pilots, Panepinto saw the need to develop an in house training program to fill his company vacancies. Experiences from that program and having observed the operations of hundreds of other seaplane pilots led Lyle to found the Seaplane Safety Institute sponsored by Southern Seaplane.

-Rhonda Panepinto Staffs the Seaplane Safety Institute Exhibit at AirVenture Seaplane Base-

The Panepinto family introduced the Institute to seaplane pilots with an exhibit at the EAA Waterbird Base during AirVenture this year. Wife Rhonda who handles the administrative duties of the Institute staffed the booth.  Daughter Lacey, also a company floatplane pilot, flew to OSH with her dad in their C-206 amphibian. Lacy adds the third generation of experience to the family business.

-Lyle Panepinto speaks with observers after video taping a C-206 docking demonstration at AirVenture Seaplane Base-

Early morning AirVenture seaplane base visitors had the pleasure of watching Lyle during video taping a C-206 docking demonstration. With endless energy, Lyle gave a full precision demo of lay along side docking, nose-in tie-ups, departing dock down wind, using the prop, and the "scramble". According to Panepinto, the "scramble" technique is only for over 3,000 to 4,000 pound aircraft to protect your control surfaces or wing from an impact. When your aircraft is drifting toward a hard object, like a boathouse, the "scramble" could save your plane from damage.

-Panepinto demostrates the "scramble" technique used to protect wings and control surfaces from a potential impact damage-

During the dock demo, Lyle mentioned a few of his "Golden Rules of Safety". He emphasized the importance of approaching a landing location with a plan for a way out. "Always make sure you have a way out over a way in. Know how you are going to get out  before you ever get to the docking situation," Lyle said, "These are just a few tips, techniques and tidbits from Seaplane Safety".

"We train our pilots to come from a novice to a commercial level" according to Panepinto, "We have the advantage, whether it's Wipeline, PK, Aerocet or Edo, we have the products." SSI trains in an actual aircraft as close to the customer's type of aircraft as possible or the pilot's own aircraft." Available training aircraft includes: DeHavilland DHC-2 Beaver / Wipaire 6000 amphibious floats, Cessna U206F / Wipaire 4000A amphibious floats, Cessna A185F / Edo 3500 amphibious floats, Cessna A185F / Edo 3430 straight floats, Cessna A185F / Edo 2960 straight floats and Piper PA18 Super Cub / Edo 2000 straight floats.

But the most unique safety lesson is in the Marine Survival Training. The three-day SSI course includes 3 hours in a custom underwater egress tank.  If you fly seaplanes, you will gain valuable safety training, skill and knowledge from the best career instructors at SSI. For more detailed information on the Seaplane Safety Institute see: http://seaplanesafety.com/ . -Betty Meyer

12/22/09 - New Pilot Social Network Developed in Louisiana - I am writing to introduce myself and to let you know about the advantages of the brand new pilot social network that we have created (here in Louisiana) to help keep pilots excited about and engaged in General Aviation.  The network is of the caliber of Facebook - but geared toward pilots.
It allows posting and commenting on blogs (and articles from Al Malone) , photo uploads, video uploads, and a calendar to which you can post announcements of all fly-ins or other activities.
You can create your own group - add a picture, logo, contact information - pretty much anything you want.  Then you can choose to make the information you add visible only to members of your group - or the whole world.  And you and your group members can even upload photos from fly-ins directly from their I-phones so they can brag about where they've been and what they've seen before they get home.
And.. one feature that is even more dynamic then Facebook, is the ability to tag just about anything.  In addition to tagging names in photos, pilots can also tag places, tail numbers, or anything else they'd like.  So type in "Slidell Air Show" or "New Orleans" and all photos in the system taken of that location appear.  Or type in a tail number and all photos of that airplane will appear.  It's a great way for pilots to quickly see the exciting pictures that others have taken of dream cross-country destinations - and to inspire dreams of adventures of their own.
Even though the network has only been available for a few weeks, it has already begun to attract many pilots from the local area, and even a few from around the world.  If the growth continues at its current pace, we believe that the network will have thousands of pilots within the next year.
And the best part - it's free to you and all users.  Our reward is knowing that we are promoting aviation.
I invite you to visit threesixleft.com to sign up, create a Group Page - and to add any events on your calendar.  Please add as many stories, blogs, photos, or videos, as you would like.

11/14/09 - Wings and Wheels Fly-in Report - Looks like we saved our best 2009 Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series event of the year for the last event.  Here is a report on the Chapter 1356 Wings and Wheels Fly-in in on November 7 in DeRidder from Roy Beltz.....

The weather cooperated and the event went well.  At one time there were some 55 airplanes on the ramp, with some coming later and others departing sooner.  The Young Eagle count was approximately 60 and there were lots of nice cars and motorcycles.  A P-40, a P-51 mustang, and 2 Corsairs flew in.  Approximately 1000 people came through the gate to see the airplanes, cars and motorcycles.
Thanks to Chapter President Glenn Callahan and all of the members of EAA Chapter 356 for putting on another fine event.

11/14/09 - CAP Wreath Donations Ending Soon

Late Note:  Donations are behind this year and the deadline of November 25 is fast approaching - please respond if you can.....

Ladies and Gentleman,

It is that time of year again, and our local squadron is participating in the Wreaths Across America campaign.  Last year so many of you responded to my pleas for donations to purchase Christmas wreaths, we placed over 1000 of them at the Port Hudson National Cemetery.  This year we would like to surpass that amount as much as we can.

Not only is this a great way to honor those who have paid the “ultimate sacrifice” giving their lives to keep us free in our own homeland, it is a great learning tool for those cadets in my squadron. As we were placing the wreaths on each grave site last year I could read the expression on some of their faces as they realized the importance of what they were doing.  The grave site could very well have been they’re own fathers, mothers, sister, brother or some other relative. What a great way to honor those fallen heroes!

So it is again I ask that you dig deep down in your pockets to contribute. For every two wreaths purchased, the company supplying them will add another one for free. Click HERE for the form which has all of the information on it, please mail it directly to the address on the form or mail it/bring it to my shop for me to include it with my weekly order.

Thanks again for your generosity.

Commander: Capitol City Composite Squadron

11/4/09 - Southern Heritage Fly-in Report - Here is the report from Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series Event No. 7 - the Southern Heritage Fly-in in Tallulah on October 31.....
The weather could not have been any better.  I wish we had a full blown air show to put on.  About 54 registered.  Between volunteers and a few others that I know were there, but didn’t register we probably had 65 to 70 people during the day.  There were about 25 to 30 planes that came and went during the day.  The Jambalaya and White Beans turned out great, especially figuring this was the first time the cook crew had ever made such a large batch.  As lunch was being consumed I overheard a conversation between two gentlemen saying “I sure am glad there are not serving hot dogs and hamburgers again”.  We also had cake and brownies for dessert.  We did not have any organized activities going on, but everyone seemed to be enjoying the good day and the fellowship.  We had four T-6’s in the area that were practicing formation flying so that kept the view good and the noise level high.  We had a total of about 12 or 15 door prizes that we gave out at lunch.

By all accounts I have I think it was a success. - Dan Fordice

10/29/09 - Louisiana Part of The Aerospace Alliance - From The Aero-News Network..    http://www.aero-news.net/

Governors Riley, Barbour and Jindal Announce The Aerospace Alliance
KC-45 Contract Is The Region's "First Priority"
Governor Bob Riley (R-AL), Governor Haley Barbour (R-MS), and Governor Bobby Jindal (R- LA) announced the launch of The Aerospace Alliance Monday. The organization is a 501(c)(6) private/public organization that the governors hope will establish the Gulf Coast and surrounding region as a world class aerospace, space and aviation corridor. The announcement was made before hundreds of supporters at an event in Bay Minette, Alabama.
The members of The Aerospace Alliance include business leaders, economic development professionals and government officials. By promoting their common assets and the region's long-standing tradition of excellence in the aerospace industry, participating states and organizations will seize opportunities to grow the sector, attracting more jobs and suppliers to the region. Members will advocate for policies, programs and specific aerospace projects on the local, state and national level.
The Gulf Coast region is already home to some of the world's most advanced aerospace installations, a number of key NASA facilities and numerous military installations critical to the Department of Defense flight missions and training. The region is centrally located to markets across the United States and offers access to global markets via numerous air and deep water ports.

The first priority of The Aerospace Alliance is to help secure the KC-45 aerial tanker program for the region. If the KC-45 aircraft is selected, the tankers will be assembled in Mobile, Alabama, bringing 48,000 direct and indirect jobs to the country, and thousands of direct and indirect jobs to the region. With the tanker program, the region would be one of the largest in the world to build large-body aircraft, along with France and the Pacific Northwest. The Aerospace Alliance will identify, educate, organize and activate allies to aggressively communicate why the KC-45 is the best solution for the warfighter, for the Gulf Coast and surrounding region, and ultimately for the United States.

While the KC-45 is the first priority for The Aerospace Alliance, it is not the only one. Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Florida are currently home to manufacturers of helicopters, missile defense systems, composite aircraft structures, engine components and many R&D firms. The Aerospace Alliance will collaborate to working towards growing these aerospace, aviation, space and defense industries in the region.
Governor Riley said, "Last year taught us something: while we all know about our long tradition of aerospace excellence and the quality and skillsets of our workforce, obviously some parts of the country (Kansas and Washington State), might not be aware. We are going to educate them, and you are going to help us. We will work together to promote our region's many assets. We will work together to advocate for policies, programs and specific aerospace projects on the local, state and national level. The programs we attract will in turn attract suppliers, bringing even more jobs and development. Our first initiative is to win the KC-45 tanker, our first lesson is Geography -- Mobile, Alabama and the Gulf Coast States are part of the U.S. and our jobs are American."
"This alliance will go far in promoting our region for what it is - one of the largest aerospace corridors in the world and a great place for companies in this sector to do business," said Governor Barbour, who addressed the event  via video uplink. "The Gulf Coast states share geographic proximity, a long tradition of aerospace and aviation activities and a skilled and experienced workforce, and by joining together, we will be well-positioned to take advantage of opportunities to grow this sector in our region."
Mitch Waldman, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems Vice President applauded their efforts, saying, "We already know that the Gulf Coast is a center of excellence in defense, aviation and aerospace. We look forward to working with Governors and leaders of Aerospace Alliance states, and the many members and supporters of The Alliance, to spread the word to the rest of the world."
Participants emphasized the need for jobs in the region's economy, badly damaged by both Hurricane Katrina and the recession. Unemployment rates are high throughout the entire Southeast, and both Alabama and Florida have unemployment over 10%.

10/22/09 - Cajun Fly-in Report - The Bill Fornof EAA Chapter 513 held their annual Cajun Fly-in last Saturday, October 17.  The skies were beautiful and the temperatures delightful but the breeze was a bit on the strong side which might have kept down the attendance a bit. My rough estimate is that 10-12 planes flew in but I've always said that the Houma Airport has enough interesting aircraft to have a nice event with just the planes that are based there.  They are always first when it comes to static displays and involving the public.  This time they had Marine helicopters, a climbing wall, model aircraft, and vehicles/guns/artifacts from the local military museum. A couple of new things for them this year were that their chapter flew their first Young Eagles and the band LaRose entertained in the hangar.  Thanks to President Tim Rochel and all of his hard working chapter members for putting on a fine event.

As always pictures do a good job of telling the story so click  HERE to see the images on the Fly-in Series Photo site.

10/14/09 - Two Killed in Pineville Crash - Thomas "Tommy" O'Leary, Jr. of Pineville and James Schultz, Jr. of Alexandria were killed in an apparent mid-air collision between O'Leary's Cessna 150 and another 150  on Saturday, October 10, near the Pineville Airport.  Both aircraft crashed.  Darrell Newell and his wife Ingrid Cannella-Newell were in the other 150 and were injured in the accident but fortunately survived.  Click HERE for the article in The Alexandria Town Talk.  Click HERE for some photos of the collision taken by a boat race spectator.  For a video report from local TV station click HERE.

Reporting on and discussing accidents like this is very difficult, especially when you know those involved.  I am having a tough time dealing with this accident - just like everyone else that knew Tommy.  And everyone .... I mean everyone.... knew Tommy.  If you went to any flying event in Louisiana and the surrounding states for the last several years I'm sure you met him.  Why am I so sure?  I have two simple reasons.  First, he came to almost every event - no matter who was putting it on or where it was.  Second, if he was there, he made it a point to meet everyone there.  And as soon as he met you he was talking up the next event and trying to get you to attend.  If you did meet him, he was one of those people you immediately liked - always upbeat and smiling.  The next time I go to an event I will be looking for Tommy and his familiar Krylon painted 150... but he won't be there.  Our deepest sympathy goes out to Tommy's family and friends.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you.  He will definitely be missed.....

What could we do to make this flyin different and better than others. I think Rough River is a great measuring stick so that's our goal.

9/23/09 - Freedom Fly-in Report -  from Mark Burns, President, Chapter 836:

The weather for the "Freedom Fly-in" on September 12 was not perfect. We know it kept many from flying in. Maybe next year we'll get lucky.  The event was held at the Union Parish Airport in Farmerville and was Event No. 4 in the 2009 Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series.

We did have 6 airplanes fly in. Bill Kelly flew his Merlin in from his private strip south of Monroe.  Earl Welch (Zenith 701) and John Boudreaux (RV-7A) flew over from Monroe (MLU).   Danny Allen (RV-6) and Robert Stassen (Grumman Tiger) flew up from Jonesboro, LA.  We also had a surprise visit from Jim Little in a Lake Amphibian on his way from Crossett, AR, to his home base in Baton Rouge. He stopped in for fuel.

We consumed 50 hamburgers and 50 hot dogs, how I'm not sure. Someone said they counted 37 people present.

We were able to fly a lot. Many rides were given. There was a broken layer at 1200 and the ceiling was reported to be about 11,000. The lack of sun made for very nice temps.

I had a great time and I heard others say they did also.

9/23/09 - BBA Aviation ERO Changes Role -  From Aero-News.Net

BBA Aviation ERO Changes Role For Lafayette, Louisiana Facility
Repair Shop Will Shift To A Support and Logistics Center
BBA Aviation Engine Repair and Overhaul (ERO) is transforming its Lafayette, Louisiana component repair operation into a support and logistics center. The component repair work currently being done at the facility will be moved to the Dallas Airmotive Heritage Park facility in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.
"This action is in line with our long-term strategy of growing our component repair business," stated BBA Aviation ERO President Hugh McElroy. "To maximize the efficiency of component repair and growth of the latest technology, we are going to concentrate this work at our two dedicated Centers of Excellence - Dallas, Texas and Portsmouth, England. By treating this work as a standalone business, we can streamline the operation and speed the turn times on these critical and high demand items."
The Lafayette logistics operation will now report through ERO's parts distribution company International Turbine Services (ITS). "Leading our support and logistics efforts in Lafayette will be Deanna Suire with whom our customers are already acquainted. She will serve as the focal point for exchanges, pickup and delivery of parts and expediting orders. Those operators who know Deanna already know that she will ensure the delivery of the finest support. Quality, speed and service are of utmost importance to rotorcraft operators. Dallas Airmotive knows this and is working tirelessly to deliver the best service of its kind in the industry."

9/1/09 - Pilots for Patients Needs Your Help - I’m sure that by now most of you have heard about Louisiana’s own Pilots for Patients. If you haven’t, then here is the short version of the organization’s mission. This humanitarian organization led by Philip Thomas flies patients who are medically stable to wherever treatment awaits absolutely free. Pilots for Patients is based in Louisiana and focuses on transporting Louisiana patients. These patients are flown by volunteer pilots who participate in the program by donating their time, fuel and airplanes for the flight and are not reimbursed for these expenses.

So, what does this have to do with you? It all comes down to three P’s.

The first P is for Patients

Hopefully you won’t ever need our services – but if you do its nice to know we are there  - and now you know. But there are patients out there that need our services and don’t know. So help us spread the word. Do you know of anyone that might come into contact with patients who might need these services that works in a hospital? We especially need to talk to them so please give us their names and contact information.

The second P is for Pilots.

We need volunteer pilots with a minimum of 250 hours experience and preferably IFR capable. If you own or have access to a suitable aircraft and meet these qualifications please consider volunteering to fly at least a single mission for us in 2009. By doing so you will 'make a difference' in the quality of someone's life. Pilots are able to deduct their aircraft expenses as charitable contributions.

The third P is for Patrons

Patrons and supporters of the mission to help others through Pilots for Patients may make donations by check directly to our office at Pilots for Patients, 3127 Mercedes Dr, Monroe, LA 71201

You might have noticed by now that I keep referring to this organization in terms of we, our or us. My wife Linda and I have decided to spend part of our upcoming retirement years by working with this organization. We are now the River Region Coordinators for Pilots for Patients… which means we are working on those three P’s in the parishes of St. Charles, St. John, St. James, St. Mary, Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne. We will be out on the road talking with people and making presentations. If you know of someone we need to talk to or would like us to talk to your organization just let us know. Some of the other regions in Louisiana do not have a Regional Coordinators.  If you would like to fill that void, just call the home office as well.

Let me leave you with one thought before I close.  We have over 50 volunteer pilots in this organization throughout Louisiana and even a few outside of Louisiana.  Do you know how many we have from our 7 parish River region?  None, zero, zip.  So our first of order of business is to get some pilots on board down here.  I know some of you have the qualifications and the aircraft to do this.  Who wants to be the first pilot in our region?  Give us a call.

8/16/09 - Hurricane Hangar Space Clearing House - Last year, with a hurricane approaching our coast, we organized a Hurricane Hangar Space Clearing House where we asked people to respond if they needed a hangar space to protect their aircraft or had a hangar space available to help those individuals.  As usual, the Louisiana aviation community responded and we were actually able to match a few have nots with the haves..... which made all involved happy.  I decided this would become an annual thing and that I would start earlier... and almost forgot about it.
So anyway, if you Have A Hangar (HAH) or Need a Hangar (NAH) please send your contact information to laflyins@gmail.com.  Then I'll give the NAH's the HAH's contact information and hopefully all can be arranged before panic time.... and even better lets all hope that none of this will even be needed this year.

6/17/09 - Aysen's Zenith Heads for the Sky -

President EAA Chapter 513

Houma LA

Later Note:  Sorry to have to report that the tail section of Chris' Zenith was damaged shortly after this first flight.  Here is a first hand report....  Early this afternoon a very inconsiderate pilot who should have known better started up a Citation and blasted Chris's C-701 damaging its tail section.  The just certificated plane with just a few hours was fully tied down and completely off the ramp parked near the back porch at Skypilot when the accident happened.  Sad and very unprofessional and completely preventable!

6/17/09 - Slidell Runway Closing for Resurfacing -  From Sam Carver, Slidell Municipal Airport Manager - The resurfacing of runway 18/36 will require closure of the runway for the duration of the project.  The contractor is being given 30 days to finish the project which is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 22, 2009, at 7:00 a.m.  However, barring any unforeseen circumstances or inclement weather, I anticipate the project to take between 10-20 days to complete.
The FAA is allowing the use of the taxiway as a runway during this period with certain stipulations.  The City will alter the markings on the taxiway to reflect its use as a runway.  Aircraft weighing less than 12, 500 pounds will then be allowed to use it during daylight hours, VFR only.  We would greatly appreciate it if you could refrain from conducting recreational aviation operations during this time.  This will assist us in lessening the traffic on the taxiway and make it more available to those pilots whose occupations rely on aviation.
In addition, beginning on June 22, 2009, use of the taxiway by motor vehicles will be strictly prohibited.  The only motor vehicles allowed on the taxiway from that day on will be those owned by Airport Management.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at 985-641-7590.

Former dusting pilot, Jim St. Julien (pictured below in a Stearman plane in the 1950s), recalls the skills needed for that type of flying. ... Click HERE for the whole story.

5/20/09 - Pilots for Patients Needs Volunteer Pilots -  I bumped into Pilots for Patients President  Phillip Thomas and his group of volunteers at the Acadian Airfest and he mentioned that he had been given the opportunity to speak at the LAMA Convention.  His speech is bearing fruit - at least as far as getting more patients and missions are concerned.  That logically translates into the next need which would be for more pilots to fly those missions and patients.... so consider stepping in to fill that void.  If you want more info go to PilotsforPatients.org.

By the way, Phillip tells me that they are about to fly their 300th mission which is quite an achievement.... but more on that later.  All I can say is what a great work this organization is doing... and it all comes straight from the heart.  If you would like to volunteer contact:

5/20/09 - How Not to Kill Yourself -  Alan Malone recently wrote a small essay that he fortunately decided to share with us.  He said you might call it a sermon - but definitely one worth preaching.  It is a presentation of one aspect of risk management he has been trying to sell to amateur pilots.  Who is Alan Malone?  Here is brief bit of information directly from him...."I pretty much would like that writing speak for itself.  But broad outlines:  started flying in October of 1960, and have been committing aviation on a fairly regular basis ever since.  I've been a CFI since the mid-'60s and became a designated examiner around the early '70s.  Retired from that activity around 3 years ago, and I'm still maintaining one basic and one instrument student, mainly to keep myself current.  Retired from my "career" as a physics teacher at Country Day School in Metairie in 1998, and have spent the balance of my time trying to learn to write.  Hope to complete the Great American Novel this year or next.  Own a 182, in partnership with 4 other people, and fly out of Lakefront Airport in New Orleans."     Anyway, click HERE to read this outstanding article.  Hope you like it.

4/29/09 - Report on the Reserve Fly-in -  Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series event No. 2 sponsored by EAA Chapter 971 in Reserve, LA, had similar problems to our first 2009 event in Shreveport - inclement weather. The wind there wasn't quite as high as experienced in Shreveport but it was high enough to ground the Young Eagles flights for the day. While there was no rain, the low ceilings and even worst weather in much of the rest of the state held down the attendance. On the positive side, it did contribute to a very comfortable temperature throughout the day. Eight airplanes flew in and 30 people registered. Good local attendance also helped eat up just about all of the pastalaya and hot dogs. It was also fortunate that two Pilot Seminars on the new Wings program presented by Brian Capone were scheduled because it helped to boost the attendance. The two very informative seminars on the new optional approach to "spread out" the requirements to meet the Biennual Flight Review were attended by over 20 pilots. Thanks to Chapter 971 President Mike Saladino and all of his hard working volunteers for doing their usual fine job of putting on a successful event in spite of the unique weather situation.  If you want to take a look at the pictures you can click HERE.

4/23/09 - Marion Brown WASP History - Julie Reed, librarian for Texas Woman's University, sent me an e-mail to let me know that the library had responded, after learning of Marion Brown's death, to put her donated collection up on their website for review.  Marion was so quiet and conservative about all of her accomplishments that a lot of people never knew all of her achievements.  If you are interested, the links below are to old WASP pictures, oral histories and location of manuscripts of Marion's aviation life.

The Woman's Collection of the Blagg-Huey Library at Texas Woman's University represents a major research collection on the history of American women. The Library first began collecting the biographies of great women in 1932 at the suggestion of its president, Dr. Louis H. Hubbard, "to serve as role models" to students. Since then it has grown to over 42,000 books, 3,000 cubic feet of manuscript collections, 19,000 photographs, approximately 2,000 periodical titles, and major manuscript and book collections on microfilm.

4/21/09 - Marion Brown Gone West -  I am very sad to report that Marion Brown, WASP and long-time FAA flight examiner for Louisiana died early this morning.  Her family is making arrangements and I will pass them along when I have them.
Her son, Mike, reports Marion was early in the WASP and second class to graduate.     Also, probably the youngest, since she graduated from 4 yr. university at 18, taught PE to girls a year or two younger and then onto flying at 20. - From Ann McMahon

4/21/09 - Floyd McCallip Gone West -  Our chapter, and our community lost one of the finest men that I've ever known, as I'm sure all who have known this wonderful man, feels the same. Floyd left us this past Friday(17th).  We (chapter ) had a covered dish supper last Monday nite and we shared supper with he and Malva. Our heartfelt prayers go out to the family.  I am sure their loss will leave a void in their lives as well as ours. 4/2/09 - Shreveport Fly-in Series Event Report -  Report on Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series Event No. 1 by Shreveport EAA Chapter 343 President  Steve Roop - For another year, Shreveport took the honors to kick off the Louisiana Fly-in Series.  This year, Greg's Runway Cafe has brought a varied menu and some really good food to visitors at the Downtown Airport, and Greg has been a real asset in opening on Saturday to host our fly-ins.  We had a great turnout of locals, but the post frontal passage winds held down our out of town attendance.  Winds were gusting out of the west to 29 knots, so it was a big surprise that our first flight in was in a taildragger.  We awarded the first door prize to those souls for braving the winds with conventional gear.  We had two other planes arrive and eat with us and it was a treat to have them come.  Greg served up catfish and hamburgers, along with oyster and shrimp po'boys.  Follow that up with his famous chocolate or coconut pies, and the increased wing loadings that resulted smoothed out the moderate turbulence for our guests as they traveled back home!

f you haven't been to KDTN for our monthly fly-ins lately, you've really been missing out.  Sorry the weatherman didn't fully cooperate Saturday, but we hope you'll join us next month!

3/24/09 - Marion Brown Very ill -  I've received a report that Marion Brown is very ill.  She is being cared for by family, skilled nursing care and hospice.
For those who might not have heard of Marion - she was the first female flight examiner for the FAA in Louisiana and held that position for almost 20-years.  She taught a lot of people how to fly and inspired many others.  She learned to fly in, of all places, New Orleans in the late 1930's as part of the Civil Pilot Training Programming.  Her graduation from that program is what made her attractive for induction into the WASP's.  Marion told me she would fly newly manufactured trainer aircraft up into Canada.  She also won several air races, one of them down the State of Florida into Cuba.  She is being remembered by many as being very supportive of young pilots trying to earn their wings and also very cool and organized in the left seat, no matter the conditions.  She is a life-time member of the 99's.
Her family says cards and pictures lift her spirits.  They can be sent to her at the address below.

3/14/09 - More on Louisiana Cessna 182 Crash -  Pilot became disoriented before crash that killed 3 in southeastern La.  by The Associated Press  - Thursday March 12, 2009, 9:03 AM

BATON ROUGE -- A single-engine airplane that crashed last month in southeastern Louisiana, killing all three people aboard, flew into increasingly cloudy conditions at night before the plane hit the ground at high speed, federal accident investigators say in a preliminary report.

An aviation safety expert said Wednesday's report by the National Transportation Safety Board indicates that the pilot of the Cessna 182 -- Glyn Ray Johnson, 39, of Gauthier, Miss. -- became disoriented in cloudy conditions that can often send pilots awry unless they rely on the craft's instruments.

"The evidence that I'm aware of points to that. In my opinion, it's the most likely scenario that took place," said Keith Mackey, president of Ocala, Fla.-based Mackey International and an aviation safety expert.

The NTSB report called the conditions marginal for flying by sight, said NTSB investigator Tom Latson.

The report said Johnson did not file a flight plan, which would have required him to show he got a weather briefing before takeoff. Latson said investigators were still trying to determine if Johnson received a briefing.

A full report, including an official probable cause of the Feb. 27 crash, could take more than a year to complete, the NTSB said.

Also killed in the crash north of Albany were Johnson's girlfriend, Tabitha Dolbare, 39, of Vancleave, Miss., and their son, Nelson Dolbare, 12, who lived with his mother.

The plane had left Slidell Airport at 11:15 p.m. headed northwest for Marksville, where the family was to attend a sport parachute meet the next day, the NTSB said.

2/7/09 - NTSB Updates Factual Report On Louisiana S-76 Downing - From Aero-News.Network... http://www.aero-news.net/

Flight Recorders Recovered, Show RPM Drop After Noise

In its continuing investigation of the January 4, 2009, fatal accident involving a PHI Sikorsky S-76C++ helicopter that crashed in a swamp near Morgan City, LA, on Thursday the National Transportation Safety Board released the following factual information:

A detailed examination of the wreckage and components has not revealed any evidence of pre-impact engine, transmission, hydraulic servo, or systems failures. Additionally, no evidence of a midair collision, or in-flight rotorblade failure was found. An adequate amount of fuel was on board the helicopter at the time of the accident. No evidence of fuel starvation, a bird strike or electrical arcing has been found.

Data from the Penny & Giles combination flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) were analyzed at the NTSB's Recorders Laboratory with download assistance from the manufacturer's facility in England, and the US Army Safety Center in Fort Rucker, AL. Both recorders captured the accident flight.

Analysis of FDR data indicates that the helicopter was cruising at 138 knots, at an altitude of about 700 feet above the ground. The CVR indicates a loud noise followed by a substantial increase in the background noise level that was recorded on both intercom microphones and area microphone. About one second after the loud noise, the torque of both engines drops simultaneously to near zero.

The engine and rotor parameters recorded by the FDR and recorded sounds from the CVR show a simultaneous drop in RPMs over the next several seconds. The airspeed decreased slightly for the next 10 seconds while the helicopter descended. The engine continued to operate at low power levels until the end of the recorded data.

The non-volatile memory (NVM) from the engines' digital engine control units was successfully downloaded, and no faults were recorded. Additionally, NVM from the enhanced ground proximity warning system was successfully downloaded, and was consistent with DFDR data.

All three main rotor hydraulic servos and the tail rotor servo were found in good condition with no external leakage or damage. Functional tests and tear downs revealed no problems. Hydraulic reservoirs were full and no leakage was found.

The main rotor transmission had no external damage and the rotor shafts were free to rotate. The transmission case was opened and all internal components appeared normal with no damage.

The engines were examined. They showed evidence of having been producing power at impact. No anomalies were noted that would have prevented normal operation.

Portions of the windscreen and composite center post have been recovered and sent to the NTSB laboratory in Washington, DC for further examination and analysis of the composite structure and windscreen.

Parties to the investigation include the FAA, PHI, Turbomeca, and Sikorsky.

2/1/09 - Bob Johler Remembrance - Longtime Louisiana resident and aviator, Robert "Bob" Johler, passed away on January 21, 2009.  Bob was a resident of LaPlace, a member of EAA Chapter 971 of Reserve, the AOPA Airport Support Network volunteer for the St. John the Baptist Airport, a ham radio operator, and a St. John Parish Civil Defense volunteer.  We want to express our deepest sympathy to Bob's family.  He will be missed.  Bob's wish was to pass from this earth with little fanfare. In keeping with his wishes there was no formal service.  His family agreed that a informal remembrance at the airport would be fitting.  Bob's son Robbie, friends, fellow aviators and ham radio operators all gathered at the St. John Airport on the afternoon of Saturday, January 31.  The event started with a memorial fly-by done by Sonny Schilleci in his L-39 jet (see story on this aircraft in the following news item).  If was followed by a group picture, lots of stories about Bob, and then a group toast toward the setting sun to wish Bob farewell as he has "gone west".  Special thanks to professional photographer Phil Colwart for attending and capturing some beautiful images.   If you would like to see his photos and all of the other event photos click HERE.

2/1/09 - Another L-39 in Louisiana - There is another L-39 Albatross jet that now calls Louisiana home.  Sonny Schilleci now has one that is based at the St. John the Baptist Parish Airport in Reserve, LA.  Here are some interesting details on the aircraft from Sonny....

My L-39 was produced in 1977 and is designated a Aero Vodochody L-39ZO (Training/Light Attack). After production it was delivered to and served its life in the East German Air Force and was designated '141'. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989/1990 East Germany became part of the German Democratic Republic. Subsequent to this, the East German Air Force was eventually dissolved. Destruction orders were issued to the East German fleet of aircraft along with all aircraft maintenance records.

During the pre-buy I met Uli Megel, a former Major with the East German Air Force, at International Jets in Gadsden, AL. Uli was performing the pre-buy inspection and recognized the serial number. He advised me that 141 was the only surviving L-39 to fly away from East Germany and attested to the fact as he was the maintenance person to sign off the books on the day of departure, March 8, 1995 (coincidentally my Dad's birthday). He also recently sent me pictures of 141 the day it departed East Germany. With it came all factory and East German maintenance records from 1977 on. There are a few other L-39's that survived from the East German Air Force but Uli advised the airframes were cut to demil them and the military maintenance records were destroyed.

Uli told me that a famous French air show pilot (not sure of his name yet) purchased 141 from the German Government (not sure yet how he did that either). The aircraft was flown back to France and shipped to the US. It was restored on the West Coast and purchased by a Boeing engineer. I was advised that after 141 was finished restoration and flying the new owner would fly factory techs in from Aero to do the yearly maintenance. I later found out Aero, located in the CZ Republic, was purchased and owned by Boeing for a period of time. That answered the puzzle about flying the factory techs in. He must have had a hook as he worked for Boeing at the time. Another interesting tid bit...the test flights performed in the US after the restoration was complete were done by the legendary fighter/test pilot Skip Holm.

If you want to see some photos of this beautiful aircraft just click HERE.  The pictures don't do it justice. If you want to see it in person, just stop by Auric Avionics at the St. John Airport in Reserve.... and don't forget that Sonny would love to discuss doing the avionics work on your aircraft while you're there.

1/14/09 - Louisiana Air Shows for 2009  - The ICAS calendar has three air shows for Louisiana this year - the N'Awlins Air Show at NAS New Orleans featuring the Blue Angels, the Defenders of Liberty Open House & Air Show at Barksdale Air Force Base featuring the Canadian Snowbirds and the Acadiana AirFest at the Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia.    These shows are scheduled for the first three consecutive weekends in May.  Keesler AFB in Biloxi will also have a show on April 4-5 featuring the Thunderbirds so all of the major North American military jet teams will be in the area this spring.  The only other Louisiana air show I have heard about is planned for the Slidell Airport in the fall.  I do not have a specific date yet.  All of these events are on the LaFly-ins Event calendar along with a lot more.

1/14/09 - 2009 Fly-in Series Status  - The planning for the 2009 Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series is well underway.  This might be a surprise to some of you that thought the nation's financial distress might cause us to cancel.  The short answer is no...this is Louisiana....we don't let little things like not having any money prevent us from having a good time.  After all, the price of gas is way down now.   Now, I'm not sure what kind of response I'm going to get when I start asking sponsors for prizes.  But prizes or not,.... we are going to have another good year with 9 events set and one more potential event in Shreveport.  When I get that date I will put out the press release, posters, etc.   Here are the event dates so far:

Reserve /St. John  - April 18
Slidell - April 25
Vidalia - May 2
False River - May 9
Ruston - September 12
Pineville - October 9-10
Houma - October 17
Tallulah - October 31
DeRidder - November 7

1/7/09 - PHI Helicopter Down in Terrebonne Parish  - A PHI Sikorsky S-76 helicopter crashed on the way to an offshore drilling rig on Sunday, January 4.  Eight people were killed and one survived in critical condition.  Here are links to a couple of news articles and videos.....

In a related story, a PHI medical helicopter made an emergency landing in Indiana on Monday, January 5, following some kind of unidentified mechanical problem.  There was no damage and no injuries.  Click HERE for the details.

1/4/09 - Lakefront Airport Coming Back  -- I took a ride through Lakefront Airport just before Christmas to see how it was progressing.  While some of the structures look just like they did after Hurricane Katrina, I was surprised to see three new FBO's/Flight Schools in business...plus the restoration of the old Terminal is well underway.   AeroPremier Jet Center has opened in the old National Guard Hangar and the old McDermott Hangar.  Flight Academy of New Orleans is located near the Control Tower.  Finally, Flightline First, has opened at the old Taylor Energy Hangar and looks like it is undergoing some serious renovation/construction there.  Its a tough economic climate to start any new business so I wish all of these new businesses a great deal of success.

12/21/08 - Cirrus Down in Louisiana  -- A Louisiana-based 2007 Cirrus SR-22 had an engine failure just after Midnight 4 miles north of the Patterson Airport.  Pilot Russel Redmond deployed the ballistic chute and landed unharmed right on the edge of a canal.  You can tell from the photo below that this was a perfect chute deployment and landing.

Cirrus Chute.jpg (168320 bytes)

Click photo for a larger image, Photo courtesy of Darryl Christen

The pictures below made during the recovery of the aircraft show little to no structural damage... although I'm sure that the parachute and straps blowing out of the fuselage and then some Louisiana Bayou water getting into everything didn't do it any good.  But the important thing is that the pilot was not injured... and that's what its all about.  Finding out this happened in the middle of the night over that kind of territory makes this save even more important.

11/9/08 - Wings and Wheels Concludes the Series  -- This is the second year for the EAA Chapter 1356 Wings and Wheels Fly-in at the Beauregard Regional Airport in DeRidder, but this year they decided to have their event close out the 2008 Louisiana EAA Fly-in Series - and they did it in grand style.  President Mike Lout and all of his hard-working volunteers had this event running like a well-oiled machine.  It was another gorgeous day so the turn out was excellent - for all of the varieties of featured vehicles like planes, trains and automobiles  (sorry, I got carried away, there weren't any trains but they did have a ton of motorcycles).  They have a beautiful facility there with lots of room to expand. It was also a military base during World War II so there is group working hard to preserve the facility's history which is really neat. He also mentioned that he received excellent cooperation from the DeRidder public officials and those that run the airport which contributed greatly to the success of the event.  They had the largest turnout from the general public including show cars and motorcycles that I think I have seen at any series event yet so I know they worked hard on the publicity. Of course that is one of the central purposes of the series - to introduce aviation to those that aren't currently involved.  They did that extremely well.  Thanks to Mike, Sharon and Roy Beltz, and all of the many Chapter 1356 volunteers that I did not get to meet for a job very well done.  And if you don't believe me about the turn-out check out the event pictures by clicking  HERE .

11/9/08 - Southern Heritage Fly-in Successful  -- October 25 was another beautiful fall Louisiana day, so aircraft descended in the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport to enjoy another successful Southern Heritage Fly-in.  This event is held as a joint event by the Southern Heritage Air Museum folks and the EAA Chapter 836 folks from Northeast Louisiana.  Southern Heritage's Dan Fordice reports that the turnout was good and participants got to enjoy some great fried catfish with all the trimmings (after all, this is Louisiana so we must have good food).  They also got to enjoy some low passes by Jimmy Fordham's Yak bunch and also some T-6's.  Continuing on with the cat (without the fish) theme, apparently the airport has been overrun with cats of the four- legged furry variety.  Well, Airport Manager Randy Woods decided it would be great if every fly-in participant would take one home.  I have to admit that is a novel idea and a first for the series - but he apparently didn't have many takers. Thanks to all of the Southern Heritage gang along with President Lawrence Higginbotham and his Chapter 836 folks for their hard work to give us all another event to enjoy.

11/9/08 - Concordia Parish Airport Makes the News  -- The first big thing is that they have their new 24-7 self-service Avgas facility up and running after many years of trying.  The next even bigger thing is that they have a special price of $3.86 per gallon so bring on the credit and debit cards.  Finally, the last thing is they have been featured in a November EAA Sport Pilot magazine article about the Powered Parachute Caravan that visited them in May.  They showed those folks what Louisiana hospitality is in a big way. Congratulations to all the folks at Concordia like Carl Sayers, Jerry Stallings, Mike McCrory, and many others for working so hard to make that airport successful.

11/9/08 - New Iberia Flight School Opens  -- A new flight school has opened at the Acadiana Airport in New Iberia..... 9/13/08 - Hurricane Aircraft Safe Haven  -  If you have ever owned an aircraft anywhere along the Gulf Coast you knew the anxiety that is created whenever a hurricane approaches.  Should I move it?  Should I leave it?  How strong will the storm be here?  Do I have time to get it out of harms way? Will the water rise enough here to flood?  Is my hangar strong enough? etc. etc.  To try to help aircraft owners, we tried an impromptu hangar clearing house for Hurricane Gustav to match people who had available hangar space with people who needed hangar space.  People with needs and people with hangars responded so it seemed to be helpful (as usual the aviation community stepped up to the plate).  I've decided that whenever a storm enters the Gulf that I will send out a message to the LaFlyins.com distribution list  to get this effort activated.  Every program needs a snappy acronym so I came up with one for this effort.... HASH... for Hurricane Aircraft Save Haven.
