July/August 2001 Newsletter
The most important news is to be sure to come to our club's next walk at Doheny Beach on September 8 and 9, Saturday and Sunday!
Your Laguna Turf N Surf Walkers of Orange County volunteer officer roster:
Bob Rothrock, President and Trailmaster; (949)448-8345; rbrothrock@juno.com
Bob Dykes, Vice President and Award Designer; (949)348-9268; rad1@eqe.com
Dori Blase, Treasurer and Newsletter; (949)251-0840; doriblase@aol.com
Vicki Bowman, Membership; (714)540-0987; Major_b@juno.com
Sherri Andrews, Webmaster; (760)632-9943; mesherri@home.com
In case you missed it, check out Sherri Andrews, who has been busy setting up a web page for us! The web address is http://members.home.net/laguna-walkers/. If you came to our Laguna Beach walk on Sunday you might have seen Sherri working at the Start/Finish table. She has been a member since January 2000 and even though she moved to Cardiff, she maintains her membership in our club. The next time you see her, you might say hello and strike up a conversation as she is a very interesting and enthusiastic volkswalker (that is if you find
archeology and president of an investment club interesting). She has also done an Avon 3-Day
Breast Cancer Walk, which is quite an accomplishment.
Our Laguna Beach walk was a success with nice weather, 145 participants and we sold 68 awards. We did an unusual thing on this event: we didn’t change the route; it was the same as last year. We feel that Laguna Beach is such a wonderful place to walk that people would not mind repeating the same good trail. Judging from some feedback we received, we were correct. Lois Sanford
of Redlands was the lucky winner of our New Balance shoes. Believe Art and Marilyn Line took her to the Newport Beach store on their way home!
Please join us in welcoming our latest additions to LTSW:
- Joyce Drew of Bellflower
- Tom and Marilyn Escher of Escondido
- Stuart Glickman of Corona
- Laurie Williams of Irvine
I’ve enclosed the flyer for our next walk at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point and as usual, if you are working the Start/Finish table that weekend you may pre-walk before September 8 or 9. You can get the walk directions from Bob at our next club meeting, Thursday, August 16, 2001, at the Food Court in Irvine Spectrum (where the 5 and 405 meet). Time is 5:30 P.M., or 6:30 P.M. if not eating.
Please consider helping out at our events as it is a GREAT way to meet other walkers
and helps make it a social event and not just a walk.

In September, LTSW will be celebrating its fifth birthday! If you have Charter Member under your name on the address label, you have been with us since our inception and we THANK YOU for that!!
Laguna Turf N Surf Walkers Club Memberships: If your address label is
highlighted, it is time to renew your membership. Your expiration date is right after your name on the mailing label. Please take a moment to send an email to both Vicki and myself as some email addresses need updating or correcting. In the future you may want to read our newsletter on
our website instead of getting it via snail mail. Please let me know.
The following article was taken from the HEALTH section of Biography magazine July 2001.
Forever Young, Dr. Michael Roizen Shares the Secret by Laura Muha. Dr. Roizen is 54 in calendar years, but only 38 in RealAge terms and is the author of two books: REALAGE, Are You as Young as You can Be? and THE REALAGE DIET.
20 STEPS TO STAYING YOUNG
Here, from his book, are some of Dr. Roizen’s favorite tips for a longer, healthier life:
Take an aspirin a day.
Take one 325-mg tablet daily if you are a man over 40 or a
woman over 50. Check with your doctor beforehand to make sure you’re not allergic to aspirin.
- Floss and brush daily. Gingivitis and periodontal disease cause aging of the arteries and immune system. For example, a 55-year-old man free of periodontal disease has a RealAge that is 4.2 years younger than his peer who has periodontal disease.
- Take proper safety precautions when driving. Buckle your seat belt every time you ride
in a car and drive within 5 mph of the speed limit.
- Wear a helmet every time you ride a bike. Protecting yourself with a helmet will
lower your risk of head injury and related aging by as much as 80%.
- Keep immunizations current. By making sure you have an annual flu shot and tetanus, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and pneumonia vaccines, you can help prevent vitality-robbing illnesses.
- Avoid exposure to passive smoke, and—if you smoke—stop. Don’t tolerate working or living in a smoke-filled environment. Passive smokers age almost as much as real smokers. Smoking a pack a day makes you over 8 years older than a nonsmoker. Stopping smoking makes you 1
year younger in 2 months and 7 years younger in 5 years.
- Have sex, always making sure that it is safe. Research suggests that having mutually monogamous, safe sex frequently can reduce your RealAge by at least 1.6 years.
- Drink alcohol in moderation. Women who have one-half to one alcoholic drink a day and men who have one to two drinks a day have a younger RealAge. People who are at risk for or
have a family history of alcohol abuse or addiction should not take this step.
- Take all necessary (and only necessary) medicines, and take them correctly. Following
the medication regimens prescribed by your doctor makes your RealAge 0.9 year younger. Avoiding drug interactions makes it 0.7 year younger. Always tell your doctor and pharmacist about
all prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, or supplements that you take both regularly and occasionally.
- Eat breakfast daily. Having breakfast makes you younger. Non-breakfast-eaters have a mortality rate that is 1.3-1.5 times higher than those who eat breakfast regularly.
- Laugh a lot. Laughter is a whole-body stress reducer. It helps open lines of communication with others, reduces anxiety, tension, and stress; and makes
your immune system younger.
- Get a good nights sleep regularly. This means at least 7 hours of sleep a night for women and 8 hours a night for men.
- Become a lifelong learner.People with higher levels of education and those who continue to be involved with activities that stimulate their minds undergo less mental aging.
- Lower your bad cholesterol and raise your healthy cholesterol.Try to keep your total cholesterol number below 240 and aim to have your healthy (HDL) cholesterol level at 40 or above.
- Exercise regularly.Walking the equivalent of an hour a day or doing more vigorous exercise for a shorter period of time can make you 3 to 8 years younger. Walking just half an
hour a day will give you half the “years-younger” benefit.
- Build stamina.Do vigorous exercise that boosts your heart rate for at least 20 minutes 3 times a week and you’ll reduce your RealAge by 6.4 years.
- Make yourself strong. Do strength-building exercises, such as weight lifting, 3 times a week for at least 10 minutes. These exercises are especially important for women, because they ward off brittle-bone disease (osteoporosis).
- Patrol your own health. Seek high-quality medical care and be alert to any warning signs of illness. Do not ignore any indications that something is wrong.
- Build social networks. Having a group of close friends and/or family members can help prevent aging from excessive stress.
- Maintain a constant, desirable weight. Reduce your weight gradually to what it was when you were 18 (women) or 21 (men). Lose weight slowly and avoid yo-yo dieting, because rapid gains and losses also cause aging. Reaching your weight-loss goal can make you 6 years younger.
