Our January walk at Chaparosa Canyon Wilderness Park in Laguna Niguel was a BIG success with 167 participants. We sold four New Walker Packets and one family membership. The New Balance shoes were won by Paul Solyn of Los Angeles. Yes, people do come from all over to do our walks!
At last, Vicki Bowman, our membership chairperson will be finished with chemo next month! Please look for her to be helping out at the Start/Finish table. Thank you to our members who continually help every week at the Start/Finish table: Bill & Monique Robertson, Sherri Andrews, Ron & Beverly Loney, Bud & Mabel Schmitt. We invite all members to sit with us. It is a great way to meet other members of our club and volkswalkers from other clubs (even from other states)!
Please join us in welcoming these new walkers to our club:
Patti Burke-Pratley
of Laguna WoodsDennis & Carlene Cada of Laguna Niguel
Jeanne & Dan Dague of San Juan Capistrano
Kean & Lin Engie of Tustin
Debbie Gley of Trabucco Canyon
Doris Goodman of Long Beach
Susan Strosaker of Irvine
Sieglinda Wallis of Mission Viejo
The membership application is included in each newsletter for those wishing to renew (name highlighted on address) or for new people who are interested in joining and therefore supporting a club who put on six walking events per year and have four Year-Rounds for those times when you want to enjoy the beautiful scenery here in Orange County.
Enclosed (in the mailed version) is the flyer for our next walk at Jeronimo Green Belt Park in Mission Viejo and Bob's article, Oso Creek Trail in Mission Viejo. As usual, if you are working the Start/Finish table that weekend you may pre-walk before March 9th. You can get the walk directions and pre-registration start card from Bob. Also, if anyone has an idea for a new LTSW walk, please talk to Bob as he can help you put it all together
Our bank balance as of the last statement dated January 31, 2002 was $2,957.46
Here are the wide variety of events planned in Southern California for the next several months:

Final numbers on our year-rounds for 2001:
#190 Dana Point Bike 26 bikers (7 from out-of-state)
#1342 Laguna Niguel Lake Walk 62 walkers (20 from out-of-state)
#251 Balboa Island/Newport Beach Walk 145 walkers (65 from out-of-state)
#1343 Dana Point Harbor Walk 145 walkers (51 from out-of-state) plus 31 walkers from Tater Tours of Henderson, NV. They were a bus group from Nevada, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, Virginia, New York and Massachusetts who walked on November 4th. We were honored and thank them very much. People who cast a vote for their favorite Year Round walks can only vote for Year Rounds in states other than their own.
Thinking ahead, here are LTSW's other Orange County walks and dates for 2002:
The CVA annual convention will be held May 3, 4, & 5, 2002 in Vacaville, (Solana County) California. They have planned four walks, a luncheon meeting and a dinner. This gives everyone the opportunity to meet fellow volkswalkers from all over the state and to walk in another county (if you are among the many who try to walk every California county).
The AVA National Convention will be held in Colorado in June 2003.
Last September LTSW had it's fifth birthday! If you have Charter Member under your name on the address label, you have been with us since our inception and we THANK YOU for that!!
Please, we do not intend to be lifetime club officers , so let us know if you are interested in taking a more active role in your club!
Arrive Alive: Fred Mottola's Tips for Driving Safety (from Biography Magazine)
By Laura MuhaA Wake-Up Call on Drowsy Driving
Here's a sobering thought: According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), "Driving while drowsy is no different than driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs." That's because sleepiness has the same effect: your reaction time slows, your awareness decreases, and your judgment is impaired. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 100,000 police a year crashes report crashes that involve drowsiness and fatigue as a principal factor. At least 71,000 people are injured and 1,500 killed in sleep-related crashes each year.
In a recent NSF poll, 51% of adults admitted to driving while drowsy in the past year, and 24% of those 18-29 years old reported they had actually fallen asleep at the wheel. To avoid being one of them, here are the NSF's warning signs of driver fatigue:
You can't remember the last few miles driven
You drift from your lane, keep jerking your car back into the lane, or hit a "rumble" strip on the shoulder
You have difficulty focusing, keeping your eyes open, or your head up
You tailgate or miss traffic signs
Fred Mottola suggests that one way to avoid drowsy driving is to become aware of your personal biological clock. What times of day do you feel most tired? Almost everyone feels sleepy mid-afternoon. If you're already on the road and realize that you are susceptible to falling asleep, you can make a conscious effort to keep your eyes moving to search intersections and check your rearview mirror more often. But when your eyes begin to resist those movements, says Mottola, you must get off the road. Find a safe place such as the well-lighted parking lot of a fast-food restaurant, park the car, and lock the doors. Close your eyes and relax for 15 minutes. If you fall asleep, you know it was needed. But if this pattern occurs often, investigate the possibility that you may have a sleep disorder.
Sudden Impact: The Hard Facts on Crashes
Nearly 6.3 million crashes occurred in the U.S. in 1999.
About 2 million people were injured and 37,043 died.
Midnight to 3 A.M. on Saturdays and Sundays were the deadliest 3-hour periods.
38% of fatal crashes involved alcohol.
The highest number of crashes and fatalities occur among teenagers (age 16-19); next come drivers in their early 20s (ages 20-24) and elderly drivers (age 70 and over).
More men than women die each year in car crashes. The reason: Men typically drive more miles and more often engage in risky behave like not wearing a seatbelt.
The good news: Cars are getting safer. About half of 1999-2001 models tested in a crash test earned good ratings, as compared with one in for the 1995-1998 models.
