Back ] Up ] Next ]

The fifth annual L.A. Iverson reunion was held May the 28th 29th & 30th, at the A-Z Ranch, Mohave County, Arizona.

Family Members attending were:
Grandma 1
Lee's family 0
Duard's family 7
Carla 's family 12
Harley's family 5
Garn 's family 4
Boyd's family 0
Mary's family 3
Max's family 7
Total 39.

There were 12 guests making a final count of 51.

The oldest one there was Estella (Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma) age 84. The youngest one there was Kelli Hawkinson, age 2 weeks. Garn & Max had 100% attendance. Congratulations!

It was doubtful if the reunion would be held this year as two days before Rodney met with a serious accident, and was airlifted to Las Vegas hospital for treatment. Fortunately his injuries were not as bad as first feared, for which we are all very thankful. When we heard he was out of danger we continued reunion plans. Understand that he out of hospital and doing very well.

This is my swan song newsletter, next year you will have a new reporter & writer ( sure hope they can type better than I can!) Anyway I'm dedicating my last "corny effort" to Lee Alan as when he was out here visiting last spring, he said how much he looked forward to getting them. Don't take too much to make you happy does it Lee???? And sure enough they sang your song again. and this time it was better as Johnny was helping, and he's a pro. Garn Mike, & Johnny all played their guitars and sang (Harley & Merna even danced) it was a very enjoyable time around the campfire.

The first to arrive Fri. evening were Harley, Paul, & Shamane, and George. Now I'm sure that ever one knows that George is a horse and the Star of the reunion. He had spent the winter in town and Harley made a special trip out Fri. eve to take him home, as it wouldn't be the same if he wasn't there for the kids to ride. Harley went back to town that as he had to be in school Sat. He came back Sat. afternoon with Merna and the kids.

First to (-Arrive Sat. morning was Mary's family and friends, about 10 o'clock. Carla arrived about 11 a.m. with Brent's & Kurt's close behind. They had driven up from Calif. on Friday. All the kids immediately stared riding motorcycles, and also nagging for someone to catch the horses (Chico was there too), but they had to wait for an hour or so until Cyle & Hal came, then talked them into it. Took them about an hour to chase them down, and when they got back to the house Hal said that was the "cowboy fun" he needed for the next year! It was boiling hot and he collapsed in a lawn chair, looked up at Cyle and asked, "well is this what you've been dreaming of"? (Cyle drove down through the floods from Provo to attend reunion) Cyle didn't even bother to answer that one. Kevin and Tina also braved the floods to attend. And while we are on the subject of Hal--he graduated from High School this year at the top of his class, and was interviewed on the Las Vegas 6 o'clock news. NO way did they stick him off on the 11 o'clock news, he got top billing!!! They asked him what his High School diploma meant to him. He said his first impulse was to say not a heck of a lot , but he didn't think that would make his folks too proud so he said something else, but wouldn't say what. That's O.K. Hal we're just proud of you--even if you do only come to reunions to lay in the shade and eat ice cream!! We hear that you are going to B.Y.U. next year and rooming with Cyle. Good Luck Cyle..

We had another graduate this year, Tom Wilkinson, (Boyd & Judy's) who was also a straight A student He works at a local radio station as announcer and sportscaster & does a terrific job. He accepted a full scholarship from Dixie , where he will go next year, then plans to go on church mission for 2 years, after which he will finish college. Good work Tom, we're proud of you.

It was so hot out there Sat. everyone was ready to pack up and go to Alaska, or at least North Mt. Trumbull, until Garn organized a work party and built a shade over the patio. It was really classy. They put up three pillars of barrels with cinder blocks on top, then put on metal roofing, Harley had taken out the week before bound it all together with baling wire (what else) and it was a lifesaver. After that all the socializing eating, and resting was done on the patio in the shade. Max and Mary Planted 2 little cedar trees in the yard, which will hopefully give shade sometime in the distant future. Garn thinks there's very little hope! Time will tell..

Garn took a group and drove up to Nixon, with Brent & Kurt following on their motorcycles. They said it was a lot cooler up there and thought it would be a good idea if we moved camp!!! While up there, Dan (a guest) killed an rattlesnake and put the rattles in his shirt pocket. When he got back to the ranch he went to the corral and got on Chico bareback, got almost to the house when Chico threw a fit and started rearing and snorting around. However Dan hung in there real good until Garn yelled for him to jump off which he did--no harm done--Dan thought the rattles may have scared him however he (Chico pulled the same trick several more times) GEORGE behaved very well, and every kid there got many rides on him.

Duard, Glenna, Garn, Barbara, & Cyle moved the cattle from the lower ranch to home place. Barbara said if they wanted her to be a cowpuncher the least they could do was give her a horse. She didn't think too much of "headin' 'em up and movin' 'em out " on foot. I'll bet they didn't even give you a root beer, did they Barb.????

Sat. afternoon Mary mixed up a big batch of light bread dough, and since it was too hot to bake it in cookstove she and Barbara fried it into scones, which were enjoyed to the last bite.. Sunday morning breakfast was also super. Mary and Barbara again--got up bright and early and cooked pancakes, bacon, ham, and eggs. They hung in there for about two hours and fed 30 or more people (everyone that was out of bed) You did a fantastic job ladies, and are to be congratulated. Family dinner was cooked by Tris; his own recipe we assume. He called it dutch oven potatoes cooked over the campfire. However there was much more than potatoes in it, like sausage, bacon, carrots, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms. It was excellent!! Good work, Tris.

Max, Nita, & Mary made the ice cream which was also first rate.(right Hal?)

Yula started out to "rejoice in the dirt " with us, but had car trouble at Hay Rock and had to turn back. Sorry that you didn't make it Sudie, but the dirt will still be there next year!!!

We had a raffle this year at which we raffled off 2 camp quilts, 1 baby quilt, 1 afagan 1 plant-holder, 1 pie-holder 1 tray, and 1 pickled people jar. We wish to thank Merna, Shauna, Linda, Paula, Mary, Johnny, Dick, Cheri, for all the time they put in making these things. Also a special thanks to Dick for all his time and talent spent doing the invitations..

We regret that this letter must end on a sad note. March the 6th of this year the L. A. Iverson family suffered a great loss and deep sorrow when Barry passed away. We want his immediate family (Boyd, Judy, Tom, and Bob) to know how much we love and miss him, and also how much

we love and appreciate them-.

UNRELATED THOUGHTS AND OTHER TRIVIA

I'm all for family reunions, but can't we find a pine tree to have the picnic under? (We'll try Garn)

I've said it for 5 years--this time I mean it-- I ain't coming again! Pass the root beer. (O.K. Barb.)

It's my turn to ride George, and this time I get to steer. (Paige and SeLena can';t tell the difference between George and a motorcycle)

Garn gave all the kids riding lessons, finally had to tie the reins together so they couldn't "steer" east and west at the same time.

From a 3-year-old: "when I grow up I want to be a doctor so I can get bloody hands!" Have you been watching to much TV Carrie???

From a guest: "I've never been here before, but I like it, I really like it." (Thanks Joe, we needed that.)

Remember years ago when a certain family member walked and talked in his sleep--Dad called it "riding the night horse." Well Sat. night Paige rode the night horse- all night long. (must run in the Iverson blood) The next morning she felt just swell, but boy was her Granna tired. Huh Paige?

Lisa (age 18 mos.) put Cheetos in Mary's 5 gal. water container. After an hour or so the water tasted like a cross between sheep dip and kerosene! Remember that the next time you buy Cheetos! Max poured the water on the little cedar tree. (Max & Lisa may be millionaires if they produce a Cheetos tree)

After watching Paul work cattle the week before the reunion, do believe he has turned into a good little cowpuncher. (Grandpa would be proud.)

Kurt rode his motorcycle over to Russell Spring, just to see what was there. Don't know what he saw, but he came back a real "Arizona Stripper" (cactus thorns in his legs.)

If an award for "true grit" had been given out it would have certainly gone to Paula. She came from Calif. with 4 small children, the oldest not yet 5 years the youngest 2 weeks-which she had given birth to at home--herself with a bad case of laryngitis, she couldn't speak above a whisper ( the kids had swell time, she couldn't yell at them.) She's a city kid but our vote goes to her as honorary "Arizona Strip-ite" of the year.

Have you ever watched the "Iverson Clan" try to put up a tent?? After an hours work the tent still hung at "half mast". What can we say except good try group (Where were you when we needed you, Lee Alan?)

Grandma said she had a wonderful time. The journal and album will be at her house so all that wish may see them.

HOPE WE'LL SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR
