IVERSON
REUNION
May 25, 26, and 27, 1987
The 9th annual L.A.Iverson Family Reunion was held May 23, 24, and 25th
1987 at the A-Z Ranch Mohave County, Arizona. It was a rousing success. In
our opinion, the best one we've ever had. There were 59 Iversons, and 2 or
4 guest, the score keepers weren't too clear on the guest count. Anyway it
was a super group.
Ramona and family came from Idaho. This gave Duard's family 100%
attendance and the most there (28). Congratulations! Garn and Max also
showed 100% on the tally sheet, a pat on the back to them also.
Garn and Boyd were in charge this year. They were the first to arrive, and
along with other helpers put the cover over the patio. This provided
plenty of shade for the reunion. The kitchen door had worn out so Boyd
hung a new one. He had not yet transferred his tools to his brand new
truck, so he had to use a broken screwdriver and a rock. (Or something
like that) But the board now fills the hole. If only someone had looked in
the back room, Harley had the old door repaired, painted, and ready to
hang!
Around noon we had a fine dinner, with Boyd's beans as the main course
(there have been requests for him to publish the recipe). Dinner was
served for a couple of hours, as a few people were a little late in
arriving. Paul had a bit of car trouble; so we reheated the beans for
them. (Thanks Max for stopping to help him.)
It is now time for fun and games. There was a very lively game of
volleyball going on, while another group was building a raft to cross the
mighty waters (the pond). And still another group was playing Wheel of
Fortune, which was quite a spirited competition this year. Cyle did
Vanna's job, and Carla did Pat's. That sounds backwards doesn't it? The
reason for this change was, Cyle can spell better than Carla; and the
group also got such a kick out of calling him Vanna-it just made their
day! Thanks Cyle you are a good sport!
Then came entertainment time. We had a poem-reciting contest. Hal won for
the big kids and Carrie for the little ones. They both received a souvenir
tee shirt for their efforts. Many people helped with the program. Thanks
to all of you. The song that Garn wrote and sang about Lee, Silver,
himself, Littley, and the ranch; well I reckon we were all in it. Anyway
it was great and brought a tear of nostalgia to the eye.
There was a kiddie art contest; they all drew a picture of the pond. Since
Dick's field is art he was a natural to be the judge. Thanks Dick for an
excellent job. Carrie was the winner of the art contest. Merna was top
winner in Wheel of Fortune, and Cheri Maxwell won the jelly been count.
Garn won the booby prize in the wheel game. [ED note: It was a weird
looking old banjo, which along with Boyd's plack of the ranch house, still
hang on the ranch house wall in the year 2000]
For supper Garn had brought all the fixin's for hamburgers and ice cream.
We also had all kind of soda pop and cake, all the ingredients for an
award winning alka-selzer commercial. Yum. Yum!
On Saturday Max's group plus Cyle Hal Shawn Paul Shamane and B. J. all
braved the elements and spent the night. The rest of us retreated to home
and hearth and a hot shower. Hal and Cyle slept in their mom's car-a
rather cramped situation. David, Shawn, and B.J. set up camp on top of the
bread truck, which turned out to be a quite a chilly situation. Fun, fun,
huh group?
Sunday morning a good size group returned and had a breakfast consisting
of everything from pancakes to baconburgers. With appetites satisfied,
plans were begun for an assault on Diamond Butte. There were stories of an
old windmill being on the summit. Several theories were put forth on how
this came to be there. Boyd claimed it was a Japanese spy station during
WWII. He said someone had climbed up there and found a pair of thick
glasses and a Toyota bumper--ahem, a likely story He had fairy-storied the
climbing group into believing that he was going with them--but he
chickened out at base camp! Don't feel bad group, also got kicked out of
the Wheel of Fortune game for un-sportsman-like conduct!
Cyle Hal, Paul David, Shawn and Shamane (the lone brave girl in the group)
started up the east face of Diamond Butte about 11 AM; the plan being we
would meet them at the Little Tank school house at 2PM. At the designated
time the group could be seen-with field glasses, on top of the butte, so
we forgot the schoolhouse rendezvous, and drove the trucks to the foot of
the butte to wait for them. They limped in two by two. Cyle and Paul being
the first, then Hal and Shamane, and last but not least, David and Shawn.
They were a bit weary. Shamane said,"I won't climb that monster again
unless they promise, in blood, to take the easy way up!" (We don't
think there is an easy way up!) We forgot to ask if they found the Toyota
bumper.
Back to the ranch for lunch and a rest. It was then decided to move cattle
from the Lower Place to the Upper Place. Four hours later--as Garn put
it--the cows had won every round; their score was 100 and ours was a goose
egg. Nuff said! However I would like to quote Kevin from the journal. He
told of things that happened out there and then said,"---and perhaps
most significantly, driving the herd from one place to many places."
That tells the story better than we could with a thousand pictures. Harley
and Paul hauled a couple of horses out the next day, and finished the job.
(Now if you want to hear a wild story, let Paul tell you how fast his
horse is, and how many races he has won.)
With all the goings on it got to be about midnight before some of us got
to town Sunday night--but all in all it was a swell reunion. Boyd and Garn
did a great job as our leaders-many thanks to them! Next year the task
falls to Mary and Max, so plan to attend. Barb has already promised to
sing a song, but then she also told us she had gotten a backhoe for
Mother's Day. When she goes, she goes big!
SEE YA ALL NEXT YEAR!
EDITOR'S NOTE: The reunion has had nine years to grow and mature. The
past reunion was the best ever. There have been requests to have a
mid-year mini-reunion. It seems great we are building enthusiasm. Mother
attended the first fie years and encouraged us to continue to hold
reunions. Next year will make the 10th year.
