Iverson Reunion 1988

Back ] Up ] Next ]

Well another reunion has come and gone. I was going to say it was our tenth, but Duard and I had quite a discussion about it out at the ranch; and he did his very best to convince me that it was the eleventh one. To tell the truth he just didn’t quite make a believer out of me, but he did plant a seed of doubt. So I asked Boyd, and he said, Of course Duard is right, as I have it carved the side of a tree on Diamond Butte!” Well what can I say folks, somehow I have lost a whole year

Makes one wonder if I may have to go to, ”the home where the senile roam” a lot sooner than I had hoped for! (They are both full of it!)

As usual though a fine time was had by all, there were 55 family members and 8 guests if my count is correct. I usually depend on Max for the head count, but this time he failed me. Anyway I didn’t see where he had written it in the journal. He probably used invisible ink just to confuse me!

Family dinner was Saturday, with dutch oven potatoes, hot scones, Boyd’s now famous beans, and a lot of other good stuff. It did get to be quite a drawn out affair—stretching about two and half-hours from start to finish. Do believe that if we tried hard we could consolidate just a mite.

Max and Mary were the leaders this year and they had treasure hunts, kite flying, and hula-hoops, which were all enjoyed by the youngsters. Nita’s pictionary game was also a big favorite.

A special thanks to Shawn, who did the invitations, they were great--even if the pictures were 30 years old. Sure wish we were still so young!

Next year--starting from the top--our leaders will be Lee and Duard. In case either fall short in this assignment, there shall be imposed a very stiff penalty for such dereliction of duty!

Duard had 16 members off his family there, so the gold star goes to him for most attending. Garn had 100%attendance. Max missed his usual 100%, as Kevin and Tina couldn’t come—understand Kevin met with a skiing accident, and was not broke but badly bruised. We want you to know that you were “sorely” missed Kevin! Next year Tina, don’t let him go near the snow in the month of May!

There was quite a thunderstorm Saturday night, or maybe it was closer to Sunday morning. According to Paige it was really “rad”. That means she loved it; however it did cause her a slight problem she hadn’t anticipated. When she went to bed Saturday night she had Grandpa’s old bed in the living room all to her self.  BJ and Steve were sleeping on a small cot in the same room. All went well until the wind began to blow, and it felt like snow (it was only hail) then she began to acquire bedfellows who had been sleeping on the bread truck and in other various outdoor spots. The first one was tolerated quite well, but when it got to be five, something had to give. So naturally the first bedfellow, Josh, who was also the smallest, was the one to be pushed out on the floor. Seeing no possibility of regaining his spot, he choose to seek refuge on the cot with BJ and Steve. Now Steve being the smallest in that bed—etc etc etc.  Ain’t reunions just fun fun fun!?  Boy are you lucky, Garn and Cyle that you chickened out in the wee night hours and headed for warmer, drier turf!

A good-sized group was there on Sunday in spite of the weather. Boyd, Brent’s, Kurt’s, and Duard all came back from spending the night in town. They had a couple of big bonfires going and Duard and Max cooked chicken--and potatoes and onions. Yum yum it was excellent. Even with all the mud it was fun. I liked it!

Kelli Hawkinson made her first trip to the reunion when she was two weeks old. She is now five years and two weeks old, on her second trip. She don’t remember her first and will never forget her second, as she got locked in the outhouse and had to run competition with the coyotes for quite some time before Uncle Max heard her distress signal and went to the rescue. Poor baby! But just think in another five years and two weeks you’ll be big enough to reach the latch!

Scott caught a rattlesnake, he knows how to safely handle them so the kids were all very interested in having a look. Mike and Debbie’s friend Shari wanted to eat it, so Scott did whatever you do to turn it into a delicacy, and supposedly they were going to ice it down and cook it in the morning. However Sunday morning some said it got left out in the rain and spoiled. I don’t know it that was accidentally, but suspect it was on purpose!

Their friend Shari did pay us the nicest compliment; she said to me that she hoped someday to have a family just like ours, and a reunion just like ours. She said that she and her husband Eric were having a super time! That was nice, because we surely did enjoy having them there.

This was the second time that Brad (Chrissie husband) had been to the reunion and neither time has he seen hide nor hair of a horse. He believes the horse to be a myth; thinks we’re trying to sell him a unicorn story. Could be Brad, could be!

Some of the younger set spent part of the night out in the hills hunting coyotes. Think all they got though, were cold feet and bad dispositions! Maybe it was snipes they were hunting, I’m not sure about the intended prey. There was not much rafting this year as the pond is very low, lots of mud and of course the little kids just loved it. Jason fell in clear up to his neck. Cindy’s kids seem to have a thing about falling in the pond.  Didn’t Holly fall in last year?

It was BJ’s 12th birthday the 29th, so Nita gave him the first pancake Sunday morning, and all sang happy birthday for him. I don’t know how anyone could have a better birthday than that!

Hal brought his fiancée Terri. That was a good move on your part Hal; if she’ll still marry you after attending what Max refers to as “”Iverson’s annual roll in the dirt and/or mud,” you’ve got it made! Hal couldn’t say his poem this time as his Dad or Cyle broke the printer on the computer and he couldn’t retrieve it. Anyway that is his story. He promised to send me a copy so I could send it with this letter. Time will tell. Carrie did her poem again this year. They were the only ones to do it last year, so thought they were going to start a tradition! We certainly expect both of them to have one next year.

I’m enclosing a reunion poem by Lee in all letters except his. Why do you think it is that through all the years we have not known until now how talented that he is in this area? He has written another, which you (older generation) will receive in the round-robin letter, which is excellent. Isn’t there an old saying about hiding lights under a bushel, or something?

Congratulations to Shamane and Shawn who both graduated from High School this year. An extra one to Shawn for his 4.0 grade average in the second quarter. He plans to start college at Dixie this month. Shamane didn’t tell us her plans.

Lee suggested and paid for notebooks (which we all wrote in, or as many as I could run down did) and pictures to be sent to Lee Alan in South America, and Paul in Iowa. (Is that close to South America Barb?) Where ever their destinations--they are in the mail. Of course that doesn’t mean much, as I just received pictures from my granddaughters, Wynter and Ashley in California, that were mailed the fifth of May. Don’t tell me that Pony Express couldn’t have done better than that!

Anyway fellows, hope you enjoy them.

I’m sure by now you’ve had about all of this you can stand, so goodbye for this time. Hope you are all looking forward to a really great time next year at out Twelfth reunion (eleventh really, those guys are still full of it

SEE YOU THERE

P. S. Please overlook or forgive all errors made by the typewriter or me, Boyd gave it to me. This is the second one he has given me to, as I told him the first one made mistakes! That was my best joke folks, in case you didn’t get it..
