1. Mix together cake
mix, butter, and 1/3 cup of the evaporated milk.
2. Put half of the mixture in a well greased 9x13 inch pan.
3. Put remaining half of mixture in freezer to cool.
(It will be much easier to work with later if it
is allowed to cool.)
4. Bake for 7 minutes at 350.
5. Set aside to cool.
6. Melt together caramels and the remaining 1/3 cup of evaporated
milk.
7. Carefully spread the melted caramels evenly over the baked cake
mix.
8. Drop the chocolate chips evenly over the melted caramels.
(You can
also add nuts if desired - however I leave them
out).
9. Crumble the remaining cake mixture over the top of the chocolate
chips.
I like to slice the cake mix into thin
strips and lay them on top of the cake.
10. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.
11. Allow to cool - you can place in the refrigerator for awhile so that the
caramel sets up firm.
12. Cut into squares. Store in the refrigerator so that they do not get
too soft.
