BANJO:
The banjo is a stringed instrument that developed from long-necked lutes that were
brought to America from Africa. Its body
is round, with a skin or parchment stretched over it somewhat like a tambourine.
A metal frame keeps the parchment firmly in place. It makes a light, twangy sound,
when
the strings are plucked with the fingertips. Basically, there are three types of banjos:
the tenor banjo, the plectrum banjo and the five-string banjo.
The
tenor and plectrum banjos have four strings. Most folk and bluegrass musicians
play the five-string banjo.
