ACOUSTIC GUITAR: The acoustic guitar normally has a flat, waisted, body usually with a round sound hole and a fretted neck along which run six nylon or steel strings. The strings are fastened at the top of the neck to tuning screws, and at the other end to a bridge glued to the instrument's sound board, or belly. The player's left-hand fingers stop the strings at the appropriate frets to produce the correct pitches; the right-hand fingers pluck the strings. When the strings vibrate, the hollow body of the guitar amplifies the sound. Some metal-strung guitars are plucked with a small flat pick. The nylon string guitars are usually called classical guitars. Most folk or popular musicians play steel string guitars. Guitars come in all shapes and sizes. |

One of the acoustic guitars that Larry plays
is a prototype Martin Simpson Signature Model made by
Stefan Sobell.
The guitar is built of particularly pretty
scantling Brazilian rosewood with tulipwood binding. It has a fitted Highlander pickup. All
of the photos below are of Larry's Martin Simpson Signature Model except
the guitar in the top right photo. That is Martin Simpson's own guitar, the first production model,
the next to be built after Larry's. It has darker
rosewood and ebony rather than tulipwood binding, but it is otherwise the same model.
In addition to the guitar that Stefan Sobell made for him, Larry has a guitar made by Linda Manzer. He also plays Martin acoustic guitars, and he uses D'Addario phosphor bronze light guage strings on his acoustic guitars. |
