Officials in Uttar Pradesh, India recently confirmed plans to build a 492-foot-tall statue of Maitreya Buddha in Kushinagar that will be three times higher than the Statue of Liberty. The base of the statue will hold a 17-story temple building.

Editorial: Appreciation to the organizers of "The Buddha Project"

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the organizers of "The Buddha Project" which took place in many places and many guises during May, June and July.

This excellent collaboration included demonstrations and presentations by nearly all the active Buddhist groups in the region. My personal favorite was the June 16th talk by John Daido Loori, Roshi which was attended by well over 50 people.

Co-curator Jeanne Rossetti tells me she is seeking a publisher to produce a record of the project, including quality reproductions of the world-class art work displayed in the many galleries that participated. I hope she is successful.

The Buddha Project was curated by Jeanne Grossetti and Robert Thurmer. Co-sponsored by Cleveland State University’s Center for Sacred Landmarks Project partners included: Arts Collinwood, The Cleveland Buddhist Temple, Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Shambhala Meditation Group, Cleveland Zazen Group, CloudWater Zendo, Gallery U, Insight Meditation of Cleveland, Jewel Heart Cleveland, Jijuyu-ji Zen Group of Cleveland, Performers and Artists for Nuclear Disarmament, Thrive: An Artspace, and West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church.
