Local News

Dean Williams, Zen sports authority, gets national spotlight

Dean Williams, leader of the Jijuyu-ji Zen Group of Cleveland, recently received an unusual phone call at work. Harvey Araton, a sports columnist for the New York Times, had an idea for a column about why the famous basketball coach, Phil Jackson, should leave the Lakers and move to Cleveland to coach the Cavaliers.

Jackson is known as the "Zen Coach" because he adapted the precepts of Zen Buddhism into coaching techniques while coaching the world-famous Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. Jackson wrote a best-selling book: Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons of a Hardwood Warrior (Hyperion, 1996).

Araton decided to type "Zen" and "Cleveland" into Google: and came up with Williams' name and phone number on the Jijuyu-ji Web site. It was a truly "karmic" phone call, since Williams is a long-time fan of both basketball and Jackson and has even read Jackson's book.

Read Araton's excellent column "Juicy Offerings for the Zen Palate," May 17, 2005 (free registration required). The column was also picked up by Tricycle: "Cleveland Zen Teacher Woos Zen Coach," May 18, 2005. Slam Dunk!!

Jewel Heart Cleveland hosts open meditation on alternate Sundays

Jewel Heart Cleveland (JHC) has a host of ongoing study and meditation opportunities. Here are a few of them: A free introductory Dharma Talk by a JHC student is offered the first Sunday of each month, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a tea.

Open meditations are held the first and third Sundays of each month from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm. These introductory classes are free and designed for beginners. Students may sit on the floor or in a chair. The class includes a question and answer period.

On the second and fourth Sundays of each month, the group holds a free White Tara practice session from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The group practices recitation of "The Prayer to the Noble Tara," written by the group's spiritual leader Gehlek Rimpoche.

Jewel Heart Cleveland is located at 2670 W14th Street in the Tremont neighborhood (Directions). For more information, call 216/687-1617 or e-mail cleveland@jewelheart.org.

CBT's Zen Shin Sangha meets weekly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Cleveland Buddhist Temple's Zen Shin Sangha (ZSS) is among Northeast Ohio's oldest continuously running meditation groups. It was founded by the CBT's Sensei Ogui, who is now the head of Buddhist Churches of America based in Chicago.

ZSS meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm under the leadership of senior students of Sensei Ogui. The Tuesday class for beginners includes two 12 minute sitting periods, walking meditation, chanting and a Dharma talk. The Wednesday classes for experienced students have the same format but more lengthy periods of sitting and chanting.

Every Sunday, CBT holds a 20 minute sitting at 10:00 am that may include chanting, depending on the service schedule. Newcomers are welcome and encouraged to arrive 10 minutes early.

All sittings are free, but a free will offering for the support of the temple is encouraged. The Cleveland Buddhist Temple is located at 1573 E. 214th St. (corner of E. 214th St. and Euclid AVe.), Euclid, OH (Directions). For more information, contact Peter Junger.

Discussion will follow. A free will offering of $5.00 for each class is suggested but not required. Jijuyu-ji Zen Group of Cleveland meets at the Cleveland Buddhist Temple (directions). Saturday Buddhist Precepts Study Group will meet on the West side

Lynne Brakeman will host a Saturday morning Buddhist Precepts Study Group at her Lakewood home from 10:00 am to noon on June 25, July 23 and August 13. To begin with, the group will read aloud and discuss from a series of unpublished Dharma talks about the precepts given by the San Francisco Zen Center's Suzuki Roshi, author of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind.

Brakeman, who practices with both the Jijuyu-ji group and the NE Ohio Soto Zen Group, is studying for lay ordination (jukai) in the Soto Zen lineage. But the study group will not be limited to texts from any one tradition. If the monthly reading/discussion format finds acceptance, the group will make a collaborative choice to work from other texts or recordings on the Buddhist precepts from other traditions. Path treaders from all traditions are welcomed. RSVP to Lynne Brakeman for details and directions.
