CBT's Rummage Sale starts Saturday, July 30 at 9:00 am

The Cleveland Buddhist Temple's (CBT) annual Rummage Sale fund raiser begins Saturday, July 30 at 9:00 am until 4:00 pm; and again Sunday, July 31, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. At the same time there will be a bake sale and free coffee.

On Sunday, August 21 at 10:00 am CBT will hold a full-day toban (temple cleaning) of its historic building. Everyone is invited to volunteer to help CBT members as a form of meditation practice. To volunteer or to obtain further information, please phone Craig Horton, the Resident Temple Coordinator, at 216/287-9524.

Jewel Heart's Gehlek Rimpoche visits Cleveland August 20 and 21

Jewel Heart Cleveland welcomes its spiritual leader, Gehlek Rimpoche, for two full-day events on Saturday, August 20 and Sunday August 21, from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm and again from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day. Rimpoche will speak on the Eight Verses for Training the Mind, written by Kdampa Master Langri Thangpa. These verses describe methods for generating great compassion and Bodhimind, the altruistic intention to attain enlightenment in order to help others. Suggested free will donation is $40 for the weekend.

Jijuyu-ji Zen Group holds all-day sitting on Saturday, August 20

The Jijuyu-ji Zen Group will hold an all day sitting at the Cleveland Buddhist Temple on Saturday, August 20. The guest speaker will be Tricia Teater, a priest from the Udumbara Zen Center in Chicago. The Cleveland Buddhist Temple is located at 1573 E. 214th St. (corner of E. 214th St. and Euclid Ave.), Euclid, OH (Directions).

On Saturday, August 21, Jijuyu-ji's Dean Williams will speak at the morning service of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Canton.

NEO Soto Zen Group changes weekly sitting location and time

The Northeast Ohio Soto Zen Group recently changed its regular weekly sitting time and location. The group noaw meets Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm at Evolution Yoga in Beachwood. The group will meet at 7:00 pm for set up and instruction meditation for new comers. A 20-minute sitting meditation period will begin at 7:15 followed by 10 minutes of walking meditation. The final 20-minute period will begin at 7:45. The sitting will end at 8:05 with a short dedication chant. Evolution Yoga is located at 3737 Park East Drive in Beachwood.

In November, the group will welcome it's teacher, Reb Anderson Tenshin Roshi, of the San Francisco Zen Center, for a three-day weekend event. The visit will include a public talk on Friday, November 11; and all-day sittings on Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13. For information on location and fee, contact Jennifer McMullen.


Cleveland Shambhala holds information series in August

Cleveland Shambhala announced a series of four classes called "Everything you always wanted to know about Shambhala but were afraid to ask." The series is designed to introduce students to the basic history, forms and practices of Shambhala Buddhism. The classes will be Tuesdays, August 9, August 16, August 23 and August 30. CloudWater Zendo announces summer break beginning August 19

CloudWater Zendo will pause its busy schedule of classes from August 19 through September 5 for summer break. Its regular meditation schedule will resume Tuesday, September 6. On Sunday, September 11, CloudWater will hold an all-day Kuan Yin Intensive from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Students can choose to attend the Medium Intensive from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm or the Short Intensive from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. CloudWater Zendo is located at 14436 Puritas Ave. on Cleveland's West Side. Buddhist Peace Fellowship recognizes new Cleveland Chapter

The Cleveland Chapter of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship (BPF) recently received official recognition from the national board of BPF. The group has three events well along in the planning stages:

  • Participation in the Cleveland Peace Show, taking place at the Free Stamp park on Labor Day, August 5.
  • An ecumenical 9/11 remembrance event on Sunday, September 11 that will include representatives of a number of faith traditions. Location TBA.
  • Participation in the Saturday, October 1 AIDS Walk in University Circle.
  • An Inner Disarmament Workshop with BPF board member Joshin Robert Althouse Friday, October 14 to Sunday October 16. There will be a public talk on Friday at a location to be announced. The fee-based Saturday and Sunday workshops will teach nonviolent communication skills. Location: Cleveland Buddhist Temple in Euclid.

All are welcome to participate in any of these events or the next meeting of the Cleveland Chapter on Sunday, August 14. The Cleveland Chapter of BPF meets at a different location each month. Contact Mark McDermott for more information.

Chicago's Ancient Dragon Zen Gate welcomes Taigen Dan Leighton August 26-28

Taigen Dan Leighton will visit the Ancient Dragon Zen Gate sangha in Chicago from August 26-28. Taigen Leighton is a student of Reb Anderson Tenshin Roshi and founded the Mountain Source Sangha meditation groups in California in 1994. Taigen is the co-author of Dogen Zenji's Extensive Record (Eihei Koroku) which was published last October. E-mail Dean Williams for more information.


Tibetan relics on view in Columbus September 9-11

The Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) is sponsoring a tour of Buddhist relics as a fund raise for its Maitreya Project in India. From September 9-11, the relics will be on view in Columbus at the Karma Thegsum Choling at 231 S. Grubb Street. Contact Michael Brennan for more information, voice: 614/228-6546.


Noted Zen teacher and scholar Shohaku Okumura visits Pittsburgh in November; Cleveland in April 2006

The Pittsburgh-based Stillpoint Zen Community will host noted Soto Zen teacher Shohaku Okumura Roshi for a three-day sesshin November 18-20. For more information, contact Stillpoint's Don Orr, voice: 412/366-4268.

Okumura Roshi founded the Sanshin Zen Community and currently resides with his family in Bloomington, IN. He has translated many important Zen texts from Japanese into English, most recently Dogen's Extensive Record : A Translation of the Eihei Koroku with Taigen Dan Leighton.

National News

Japanese Buddhist monks carry Hiroshima flame to the birthplace of the atomic bomb

On July 16, to mark the 60th anniversary of the first test of the atomic bomb, Japanese monks began a 25-day, 1,600-mile "Walk for Peace" from San Francisco to Trinity Site in New Mexico. The monks are carrying a lantern containing a remnant of the fire from the nuclear attack on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. They plan to reach Trinity site on August 9 for a televised ceremony where they will extinguish the flame and call for world peace and an end to nuclear proliferation.
