Cleveland Museum of Art sponsors sand mandala ritual at Cleveland City Hall and Wheel of Time documentary

The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) presents Circle of Compassion: The Sand Mandala Painting of Tibet, Aug. 27 through Oct. 8, a six-week residency of three lamas from the Namgyal Monastery the personal monastery of H. H. Dalai Lama of Tibet. During their residency the lamas will create a sacred mandala spiritual design by painstakingly laying millions of colorful grains of sand into the intricate design of a Kalachakra mandala. The mandala will be created in the rotunda of Cleveland’s City Hall.

The six-week residency begins Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10:00 a.m. with a traditional opening ceremony. After opening remarks from Mayor Campbell and CMA Board President James Bartlett, the three lamas will begin drafting the mandala. During the entire six-week project, spectators are invited to ask questions of the monks and join them during their daily meditations, held each morning at 10 a.m. On October 8, there will be a closing ceremony and the mandala will be dismantled, to be deposited in Lake Erie.

CMA is also hosting a Wheel of Time (2003), a documentary directed by Werner Herzog. The film follows the creation of two sand mandalas and includes an interview with the Dalai Lama. The movie’s larger focus is the world of Tibetan Buddhism and an epic pilgrimage to the site of the Kalachakra initiation Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m. at Case's Strosaker Auditorium (click here for directions provided by the Case Film Society). Tickets are $7, CMA members $5.
