Shambhala offers Training Level IV April 21-23
April 21-23, Cleveland
Shambhala Meditation Group will offer a three-day Shambhala
Training Level IV: Awakened Heart led by Director Madeline
Conacher, a founding member of Shambhala. Attendees must
have completed Shambhala Training Level III. The event begins
Friday, April 21 at 7:30 pm and continues Saturday and Sunday
8:30 am to 6:00 pm. The fee is $125. Some discounts are
available. CSMG meets at the Tyler Building, 3615 Superior
Ave. near downtown Cleveland (Directions).

Buddhist Temple's Hanamatsuri Service will be Sunday, April 23
Cleveland Buddhist Temple will hold its Buddha
Day (Hanamatsuri) service on Sunday, April 23. The day
begins at 7:00 am with preparation of the flower altar.
There will be a Japanese Dharma Talk at 10:00 a.m., Dharma
School for children at 10:00 a.m. and an English service
at 10:30 a.m. The service will include the traditional offering
of sweet tea to an image of the baby Buddha enshrined in
an altar garlanded with flowers. After the service, the
Temple members will participate in a Hanamatsuri luncheon.

Zendo and Cleveland Zazen Group hold joint Wesak celebration
Sunday, April 30
CloudWater
Zendo and the Cleveland
Zazen Group (CZG) will hold a Wesak observance at CloudWater's
Puritas Ave. Zendo on Sunday, April 30. Wesak honors the
birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of the Buddha. The
observance will begin with meditation at 9:00 am. The service
will begin at 10:30 am and will include readings, an offering
of the four elements, an aspiration offering and circumnambulation
and the traditional bathing of the Baby Buddha. CloudWater's
Ven. Shih Ying Fa and CZG's Susan Rakow will give Dharma
talks. The event will be followed by a potluck lunch. All
are invited.

Cleveland and Cleveland Shambhala host Peace Walk May 7
Cleveland
Shambhala Meditation Group (CSMG) will host the Cleveland
Chapter of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship's second Peace
Walk on May 7 at 1:00 p.m. After a brief introduction in
front of CSMG's headquarters at the Tyler Building, the
group will walk in silence for about half an hour, returning
to the Tyler Building for a meditation period and Dharma
talk followed by light refreshments.

Cleveland holds public talk on religious pluralism May 7
On Sunday, May 7, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., InterReligious
Partners in Action of Greater Cleveland, or Interact
Cleveland for short, will welcome Dr. David Odell-Scott,
co-director of the Ohio
Pluralism Project for a talk about religious diversity
in Northeast Ohio. Odell will address what he observes to
be both the challenges and promises of building a greater
interreligious community in our region. The event will be
at Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara, 38 Tarbell Ave., Bedford.
Interact Cleveland, a faith-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is
a coalition of more than sixty Bahai, Christian, Hindu,
Islamic, Jewish, Sikh and Unitarian Universalist congregations,
faith communities, campus groups, community organizations
and neighborhood residents.

Ohio's spiritual leader, Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso will visit
May 15-21
Palyul
Ohio released the schedule for the visit of its spiritual
director, KhenchenTsewang
Gyatso, May 15-21. Teachings will be at Lingling's restaurant
in Fairlawn. On Tuesday, May 16, there will be two sessions
on the Six Perfections: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:30 to 8:30
pm. Wednesday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m., there will be a public
talk at Copley High School's new auditorium.

Peace Fellowship Cleveland plans Change Your Mind Day June 3
The Cleveland
Chapter of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship is organizing
a Change
Your Mind Day (CYMD) observance the afternoon of Saturday,
June 3 at the Lagoon Picnic Area, in the Rocky
River Reservation of the Cleveland MetroParks (download
this map). CYMD is an international event promoted by
Tricycle magazine.The free event focuses on the teaching
of Buddhist meditation, and will include presentations from
the Jijuyu-ji Zen Group, the Cleveland Zen Group, Cleveland
Shambhala, the Northeast Ohio Soto Zen Group, CloudWater
Zendo, Stillwater Sangha and others.

The Buddhist
Peace Fellowship was founded in 1978 and now has 35
U.S. chapters and more than 4,000 individual members world-wide.
The Cleveland
Chapter was founded in the spring of 2005 by individuals
from a number of Northeast Ohio Buddhist groups. BPF Cleveland
welcomes people of all faith traditions who are interested
in supporting the BPF mission to serve as a cataylst and
agent for socially engaged Buddhism.

precepts study group continues in Lakewood
One Saturday a month from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, Lynne Brakeman
will host a study group on the Buddhist precepts This year
we are reading from Being
Upright: Zen Meditation and the Buddhist Precepts by
Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi. The next study dates are May
13 and June 10. The class will usually be on the second

The Jijuyu-ji
Zen Group will hold all-day sittings (zazenkai) on May
20 and June 17 at the Cleveland Buddhist Temple (CBT) from

lunch. Students are welcome to come and go at their convenience.

Zendo's Tim McCarthy leads Soto Zen retreat April 21-23
The Zen
Society of Wooster announced a Soto Zen retreat Friday,
April 21 to Sunday, April 23 at The Hermitage at Beaver
Run, about two hours from Cleveland. The retreat will be
led by Kent Zendo's Tim McCarthy. The cost is $50 including
lodging and vegetarian meals. Proceeds will be donated to
the Free Wheelchair Mission.

1 deadline to register for Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi June
sesshin in Pittsburgh
The Northeast
Ohio Soto Zen Group (NEOSZG) and Pittsburgh's Stillpoint
Sangha are collaborating to welcome back Tenshin Reb Anderson
Roshi for a Soto Zen sesshin retreat, June 16-21 at the
Franciscan Spirit and Life Center in Pittsburgh. On
June 16 at 7:00 pm, Tenshin Anderson will give a public
talk. Space for the sesshin is limited. Registration
details are available on the NEOSZG Web site. The registration
deadline is May 1.

Contemplative Garden Design workshop offered in May
On Saturday, May 13, the Zen
Community of Oak Park (near Chicago) offers a workshop
on Contemplative Garden Design with Martin Hakubai Mosko
and Alxe Noden, co-authors of Landscape
as Spirit - Creating a Contemplative Garden (Weatherhill,
2003). The eight-hour workshop will give participants the
opportunity to design for an actual space at the community's
property, then compare designs with Mosko and Noden. The
cost is $175.

Ancient Dragon Zen Gate welcomes Taigen Dan Leighton June 23-25
Taigen
Dan Leighton will visit the Ancient
Dragon Zen Gate sangha in Chicago from August 26-28.
Taigen Leighton is a student of Reb Anderson Tenshin Roshi
and founded the Mountain
Source Sangha meditation groups in California in 1994.
Taigen is the co-translator of Dogen Zenji's Extensive Record (Eihei Koroku) which was published last
October.

Heart's Gehlek Rimpoche will lead a series of classes on
Shantideva's Boddhisattva's Way of Life
In 2006, Jewel Heart Ann Arbor will welcome its spiritual
leader, Gehlek Rimpoche, for a series of all day Saturday
classes on Shantideva's classic Bodhicaryavatara. The classes
will cover Chapter
IX: Affection of Wisdom. Class will be from 10:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays, the remaining dates are: June
3, July 29, September 30 and October 21. The cost per class
is $40 for nonmembers, $20 for members.

Zen announces 2006 sesshins with Daniel Terragno
Columbus Zen announced dates for two week-long sesshins
with Daniel Terragno. The spring sesshin was March 31 through
April 7. The fall sesshin will be Tuesday, Nov. 7 through
Sunday, Nov. 12. Daniel
Terragno is the Dharma heir of John Tarrant Roshi of
the Pacific Zen Institute. Terragno started his spiritual
practice in 1967 studying the Gurdjieff Work with W.A. Nyland
before taking up Zen. Terragno received authorization to
teach Zen in 1995, and in 2001 received Dharma transmission
from Tarrant Roshi. Unless otherwise noted,

Peace Fellowship's international Membership Gathering
June 22-25 at the Garrison
Institute in Garrison, NY. The group's intention is

engaged Buddhist sangha in a family- and children-friendly

Dalai
Lama plans visit to Buffalo, NY next September
The University of Buffalo announced that HH The Dalai Lama
will speak on Friday, Sept. 21 at the University's stadium
as part of its Distinguished Speakers Series. You can sign
up to receive information about ticketing and related events
when it is available.
In other Dalai Lama news, HH is currently in the U.S. He
addressed an interfaith conference and met with Muslims
in San Francisco last week: "Dalai
Lama embraces religious tolerance; Buddhist leader urges
understanding of Islam, other faiths," San Francisco

On April 17, HH gave a talk at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota
on "Compassion in the Face of Suffering."

China
held World Forum on Buddhism April 13-17
China's government-sponsored Buddhist Association held a
World
Forum on Buddhism April 13-17. The government announced
around 1,000 monks and experts from 10 countries, China
and Hong Kong gathered in Hangzhou in the eastern province
of Zhejiang. The Dalai Lama was pointedly not invited. The
Chinese government's designated Panchen Lama, whose appointment
is disputed by the Tibetan government in exile, addressed
the gathering praising the Chinese record on religion. On
April 15, the forum moved to nearby Zhoushan, where delegates
prayed for world peace. The event garnered many headlines
in the international press.

Buddhist Film Festival publishes two DVDs
The International
Buddhist Film Festival launched a DVD label called Festival
Media by releasing two DVDs:
Both
films have been presented at film festivals and broadcast
in several countries, but neither has been previously released
on DVD. Festival Media is distributing its DVDs to national
retailers including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Borders, and
Tower, as well as through targeted Web sites and catalogs.

publishes Radio Expedition podcasts on "The Lessons of Buddhism"
National
Public Radio has archived a series of programs on Buddhism
in the context of its Radio Expeditions series.
In
"Geography
of Heaven: Kawakarpo," sound engineer Bill McQuay
describes in sound and pictures his pilgrimage around
one of Tibet's most sacred mountains.
In
"The
Lessons of the Buddha" McQuay speaks with Tibetan
