Discussion group on Buddhism at CloudWater Zendo Wednesday, Aug. 23
CoudWater Zendo will hold the second part of it's "OK,So I'm a Buddhist" discussion group on Wednesday, August 23 at 7:00 pm. Buddhists and non-Buddhists are welcome to discuss Buddhism and religious intolerance, how others react to practicing Buddhists. BPF-Cleveland celebrates its birthday; participates in Peace Show; holds Prayer for Peace event
It's a busy month for the Cleveland Chapter of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship. On Sunday, Aug. 20, the chapter will celebrate its first anniversary right after its regular monthly meeting. The meeting will be at 1:00 pm at the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River.

On Labor Day, BPF Cleveland will participate in the Cleveland Peace Show from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The Peace Show will be at Willard Park (location of the FREE Stamp). The Peace Show was created to be a counter to the Cleveland Air Show that takes place at Burke Lakefront Airport that weekend. Everyone is invited to joine BPF members in sitting and walking meditation, Buddhist coloring and a silent Peace Walk.

On Sunday, Sept. 10, the group holds its second annual Prayer for Peace event from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at West Shore Unitarian. The ecumenical event commemorates the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Representatives of six different faith traditions will make short presentations and lead the audience in prayers for tolerance and healing. There will also be musical interludes and an audience-created sand mandala. Afterwards, there will be a reception with light refreshments. Palyul Ohio's spiritual director will visit Aug. 29 to Sept 5

Tibetan Bon teacher visits Cleveland September 8-10
Green Tara Yoga in Cleveland Heights is hosting HE Ponlob Trinley Nyima Rinpoche Friday, Sept. 8 to Sunday, Sept. 9. He is a member of the Yangton lineage and is chief instructor at the Menri Monastery in Dolanji, India.

Cleveland Shambhala hosts Shambala's Lady Diana Mukpo Sept. 8-10
Lady Diana Mukpo, widow of Shambhala's Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, will visit Cleveland Shambhala Sept. 8-10. She is the author of Dragon Thunder: My life with Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche which will be published in September. The schedule:

SouthCoast Meditation Group holds Saturday mini retreat Sept. 16
The SouthCoast Meditation Group will hold its first half-day event on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 1:30 to 5:30 pm at the Cuyahoga County Public Library's Independence Branch. The "mini retreat" will include periods of Zen meditation, yoga, tai chi and Dharma discussion. Fifteen person limit, register by Sept. 16 by e-mailing Jack Ricchiuto. The SouthCoast Meditation Group meets twice a week for Zen meditation at the Urban Hope Unitarian Universal Church at 3204 Lorain Ave. in Cleveland's Ohio City Neighborhood (Mapquest Directions).

Buddhist precepts study group continues in Lakewood
One Saturday a month from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, Lynne Brakeman will host a study group on the Buddhist precepts This year we are reading from Being Upright: Zen Meditation and the Buddhist Precepts by Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi. The next study dates are September 9 and October 14. The class will usually be on the second Saturday of each month. E-mail lbrakeman@cox.net for details and directions.

CloudWater Zendo will continue its "Miso Soup for the Soul" lecture on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 pm. Ven. Cleveland Shambhala begins seven-class series on the Heart Sutra Sept. 12
Cleveland Shambhala offers a class on the Heart Sutra on seven consecutive Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 12. The course will study the sutra line by line. Suggested donation: $40. CloudWater Zendo's "Basics of Buddhism" class begins Sept. 30
CloudWater Zendo will hold Saturday morning classes on "The Basics of Buddhism" from Saturday, Sept. 30 through November 18. Classes are 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The text will be The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Buddhism. Regular tuition is $100; $80 for those who plan to take the lay precepts. Registration deadline is Sept. 27. Insight Meditation of Cleveland holds Vipassana retreat Oct. 20-22
Insight Meditation of Cleveland will hold a three-day Vipassana silent meditation retreat Oct. 20-22 at the Jesuit Retreat House in Parma. The retreat will be led by Amy Schmidt and will consist of alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation. Schmidt is a resident teacher at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, MA. She co-founded Southwest Sangha, a self-retreat center and Buddhist community in southern New Mexico. The retreat fee is $180; $50 at the time of registration, balance due by Sept. 15. Scholarships are available.
Insight Meditation of Cleveland meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm at the First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, 21600 Shaker Blvd, Shaker Heights. On the first and third Tuesdays of each month, IM's Brecksville Sangha meets at the Brecksville Library at 7:00 pm

Zen teacher AMA Samy visits Southwest Ohio Sept. 15-22
Zen Master AMA Samy will hold a Zen meditation retreat at the Grailville retreat center in Loveland, OH, September 15-22. Participants can attend for the weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) or the full week. The retreat includes silence, meditation, chi gong, opportunities for private discussions with AMA Samy, an optional Christian liturgy, and an introductory session for those new to Zen. The fee is $440 for the full week; $235 for the weekend (single room); $175 for the weekend (double room).

Zen Master AMA Samy was born in Burma to Christian parents and educated in a Buddhist environment. In 1972 he was ordained a Catholic priest. In 1982, he studied Zen Buddhism in Japan under the Dai-Roshi Yamada Koun. He lives and teaches at Bodhi Zendo, a meditation center near Madras, India.


Michigan Mindfulness Weekend coming up Sept. 29
The Bluewater Community of Mindful Living (Thich Nhat Hahn) based in Port Huron, MI, announced the second annual Michigan Mindfulness Weekend will be the last weekend of September (September 29 to October 1) at Song of the Morning in Vanderbilt, MI. Last year, more than 35 people from a three-state region attended. The schedule includes sitting and walking meditation,  sunrise walking meditation to greet the dawn, reciting the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings,  dharma discussion, ample free time to enjoy the fall weather on the nature trails and vegetarian meals. Zen teacher Claude AnShin Thomas visits Columbus and Port Huron, MI in October
Claude AnShin Thomas, a Zen priest in the lineages of Ven. Thich Nhat Hanh and Bernard Glassman Roshi, will visit Port Huron, MI, October 13-14 and Columbus, OH, October 20-22. He is the founder of the Zaltho Foundation in Concord, MA and the author of At Hell's Gate: A Soldier's Journey from War to Peace.

Columbus Zen announces 2006 sesshins with Daniel Terragno
Columbus Zen announced dates for two week-long sesshins with Daniel Terragno. The spring sesshin was March 31 through April 7. The fall sesshin will be Tuesday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 12. Daniel Terragno is the Dharma heir of John Tarrant Roshi of the Pacific Zen Institute. Terragno started his spiritual practice in 1967 studying the Gurdjieff Work with W.A. Nyland before taking up Zen. Terragno received authorization to teach Zen in 1995, and in 2001 received Dharma transmission from Tarrant Roshi. Unless otherwise noted,

Dalai Lama plans visit to Buffalo, NY in September
The University of Buffalo announced that HH The Dalai Lama will visit the university Sept. 18 to 20 as part of its Distinguished Speakers Series. On Sept. 19 he will deliver an address on the theme of promoting peace across borders through education. However, tickets initially consigned for sale to the General Public have sold out. The university is still accepting online registrations in case more general public tickets become available. Complete info.

Milarepa film gets limited US release in September
The young monk who starred in The Cup in 1999 plays the title role in Milarepa which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February. Milarepa is a legendary Tibetan mystic, visionary and poet. In July, the film was presented at the Osian's-Cinefan 8th Festival of Asian Cinema in New Delhi. The film opened a special section of the festival dedicated to Buddhist films. The director is Neten Chokling Rinpoche, spiritual head of the Pema Ewam Chogar Gyurme Ling Monastery in Bir, Himachal Pradesh in northern India. In September, the film opens in a very limited release in the United States (Los Angeles, Boulder, New York, Berkeley and Vancouver).You can sign up online to be notified when the DVD is released: www.milarepafilm.com.
