CloudWater Zendo plans two-day meditation intensive

CloudWater Zendo will hold its fall meditation intensive Saturday, September 8 (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) to Sunday, September 9 (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). The fee of $25 is due by Tuesday, September 4. Buddhist Peace Fellowship Cleveland plans Peace Show presence

For the third year in a row, on Labor Day, BPF Cleveland will participate in the Cleveland Peace Show from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The Peace Show will be at Willard Park (location of the FREE Stamp). The Peace Show was created to be a counter to the Cleveland Air Show that takes place at Burke Lakefront Airport that weekend. Everyone is invited to join BPF members in sitting and walking meditation, Buddhist coloring and a silent Peace Walk.

The group's next meeting will be Sunday, September 16 at 1:00 p.m. E-mail Mark McDermott for directions.


Peace Action Cleveland holds Sept. 11 remembrance event

Peace Action Cleveland is sponsoring an interfaith worship service at Antioch Baptist Church on September 11 at 7:00 p.m. There will be speakers from a number of different faith traditions, including Dean Williams, a Soto Zen priest, who will represent Buddhism. Cleveland Zazen Group plans weekend sesshin with Sensei Amala Wrightson in October

The Cleveland Zazen Group will welcome Auckland Zen Center's Sensei Amala Wrightson for a weekend sesshin October 19 to 21 at the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area’s Lipscomb Campus. Sensei Wrightson is the dharma heir of Roshi Bodhin Kjolhede of the Rochester Zen Center.

Sesshin applications can be requested from Susan Rakow. The fee is $130 for Rochester Zen Center members and $150 for nonmembers and includes food and lodging. For more information, contact Rakow at 216/932-3084.

The Cleveland Zen Group is an affiliate of the Rochester Zen Center (Rinzai), founded by Roshi Philip Kapleau, author of The Three Pillars of Zen. CZG meets for zazen every Tuesday evening and two Sundays a month at a member's home in Cleveland Heights. For more information, e-mail Susan Rakow


Insight Meditation of Cleveland plans October Sesshin

Insight Meditation of Cleveland recently launched it's new Web site: www.imcleveland.org. The group announced it will hold a weekend vipassana retreat October 19-21 at the Jesuit Retreat House in Parma. Details and a registration form are available on the site. Insight Meditation of Cleveland meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm at the First Unitarian Church of Cleveland, 21600 Shaker Blvd, Shaker Heights. On the first and third Tuesdays of each month, IM's Brecksville Sangha meets at the Brecksville Library at 7:00 pm.

Insight Meditation Cleveland announces format changes

Insight Meditation Cleveland meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church on Shaker Blvd. This summer, the Tuesday sangha changed its format slightly. The group will rotate the moderator function among different members of the group. The format will include meditation and dharma talks.

CloudWater offers eight-class Basics of Buddhism course

CloudWater Zendo will hold an eight-session course on the Basics of Buddhism beginning Saturday, September 29 and ending on Saturday, November 17. Classes will be 10:00 a.m. to noon. The class will cover core teachings, the history and evolution of Buddhism from ancient India to modern times, using "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Buddhism" as a text. The fee of $100 includes the cost of the textbook. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, September 26. CloudWater Zendo is located at 14436 Puritas Ave. on Cleveland's West Side. Buddhist precepts study group continues in Lakewood

One Saturday a month from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, Lynne Brakeman will host a study group on the Buddhist precepts. Currently, the group is finishing up Being Upright: Zen Meditation and the Buddhist Precepts by Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi. The next study dates are Saturday, September 8, October 6, November 3. Michigan groups hold five-day retreat over Labor Day weekend

The Lansing Buddhist Association and Dharma Drum Michigan Chapter are cosponsoring a five-day Chan Buddhist Meditation Retreat at Amitabha Village Retreat Center in Perry, MI from August 31 to September 4. The teacher will be Venerable Chi Chern, dharma heir of the Chan Master Sheng Yen. The program will include sitting and walking meditation, prostration, massage, yoga, and dharma teachings in Chinese with English translation. To register, please email Lina Wu, wulina@msu.edu


Michigan Thich Nhat Hahn group holds Mindfulness Weekend

The Bluewater Community of Mindful Living (based in Port Huron, MI) will hold its third annual Michigan Mindfulness Weekend September 21, 22 and 23 at the Song of the Morning Retreat Center in Vanderbilt, MI. The weekend begins with dinner on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and ends with a dinner on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Partial attendance is acceptable. There will be vegetarian meals, clean and modern accommodations, sitting and walking meditation, the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings, early morning walks, yoga, dharma discussions and other activities. San Francisco Zen Center's Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi leads five-day Pittsburgh sesshin

San Francisco Zen Center's senior dharma teacher and former Abbott, Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi, will visit Pittsburgh Friday October 5 to Wednesday, October 10 at the Kearns Spirituality Center in Allison Park, a suburb in Pittsburgh's North Hills. The registration deadline is September 3.

There will be a free public talk on Friday from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Friends Meeting House in Pittsburgh. Saturday through Wednesday Tenshin Roshi will lead a formal Soto Zen sesshin. Dharma talks will be on the theme: "Transforming the world in the light of Buddha's wisdom."

Tenshin Reb Anderson Roshi is a lineage-holder in the Soto Zen tradition. Born in Mississippi, he grew up in Minnesota and left advanced study in mathematics and Western psychology to come to the San Francisco Zen Center in 1967. He practiced with Suzuki Roshi, who ordained him as a priest in 1970. He received Dharma transmission in 1983 and served as abbot of San Francisco Zen Center's three training centers (City Center, Green Gulch Farm and Tassajara Zen Mountain Center) from 1986 to 1995. Tenshin Roshi continues to teach at Zen Center, living with his family at Green Gulch Farm. He is author of Warm Smiles from Cold Mountains: Dharma Talks on Zen Meditation and Being Upright: Zen Meditation and the Bodhisattva Precepts.

BBC Reporter examines religious freedom in Tibet

The BBC's Michael Bristow filed a report about religious freedom in Tibet as part of a three-part series. "Squeezed freedoms in Buddhist Tibet," published August 14, includes photographs and the news that the Chinese government has decreed that, starting September 1, all "living Buddhas" (eminent monks) will have to be approved by the government.


HH the Dalai Lama to spend October in North America
