The play deals with the lives of Martin (Caleb Housley) and Sally
(Jessica Formanek) Cramer, two educators whose lives and values seem to be
moving in separate directions. They
have just moved into the Riverview East complete with a doorman, Devlin.
Martin Cramer is a school administrator at the Little Blue Bell School, an
expensive private school, lives in an expensive high rise on Manhattan's upper east side. He
likes to play Debussy on his balcony at one a.m. Martin is looking for a great future and a
view of the river in their new expensive apartment.
Sally Cramer, played in New York by Marlo Thomas, is
his wife of 12 years and she still teaches in the inner-city. Sally enjoys playing tricks on Martin and
remembers the early years of their relationship and cherishes the richness of
their past and their commitment to change the world one child at a time.
Neither of the two is anchored in the present.
Sally’s eccentric, loud father Joe Kaminsky (Zach Mailahn) is a New York City cab driver who is
having a difficult time coming to grips with his advancing years. Joe feels comfortable dropping by the
couples new apartment any time day or night to vent about his most recent
adventure in the streets of New York.
The Street Lady (Jordan Morgan)
and the Street Man (Alex Mares) pilfer
from almost everyone in the neighborhood. Gordon (Brett Coon) and Camille (Kristen
Schweer) are neighbors that we meet on an accompanying terrace whose
marriage has problems of its own.
Nancy (Morgan Wolff),
another neighbor who obsesses about marriage with everyone she dates,
entertains lots of other lonely hearts—including Stanley (Ryan Penney)--on another balcony outside the Cramer’s apartment. The Man from Above (Ben Rausch) rants and raves about almost anything under the sun.
Other colorful characters including Perez (Blake DeForest) and a police officer
(Lauren Petri)
They have no children, but have acquired loads valuable
antiques. Their failing marriage is
sliding into the quicksand of early middle age; they are two schoolteachers
lost in little New York while surrounded by
colorful street people and stereotyped, outrageous, loud and sometimes
hilarious neighbors. Unable to find happiness apart from each other, the two
works.
"Thieves says more about New York and its people than
any play in years. I loved it!" NBC.
"Hilarious scenes, marvelous characters and touching
moments."
CBS Radio.
The THIEVES Team of 65 students is
made up of 15 actors, 15 directing team members, 15 production team members
and—for the first time in many years--20 set crew members. We are very excited that so many students
attended our meetings solely looking to be a part of our set crew. All 20 of the students who were chosen to
work on the set crew made that their first choice.
102 students attended the general meetings held after
Labor Day & 82 students successfully completed the audition workshops.
Parent Meeting a Success!
Parents
Volunteer to Help with Production Committees
We would like to thank all the parents who made our
THIEVES Parent Meeting such a success.
While we would have enjoyed meeting more of our student’s parents, we
were very pleased to have 30 families represented at our meeting.
Our Parent Committees are
being finalized and emails will be sent to our volunteers later this
evening. We have eight committees for
parents interested in being involved in the production. We have chairs for the Cast Party
Committee, the Pizza Party Committee, the Cast Photographs Committee, and the
Ticket-Taking Committee. We could
still use some help with some of our other parent committees.

CHECK OUT THE VOLUNTEER LINKS FOR PARENTS ON THE LCHS WEB-SITE. If you scroll down to the bottom of the
article, you’ll find our committees and a description of them.
The cast party will be held
on Saturday November 3, 2007 after students are finished with the reception
line, hanging up costumes and doing some very light preparation for our SET
STRIKE on Sunday November 4, 2007 at 1:00 PM. The auditorium must be
ready for our NHS Induction on Monday November 5, 2007.
We are pleased to announce that Mr. & Mrs. Penney have graciously
volunteered to host the cast party on November 4, 2007 following the closing night performance. The
Penneys live at 21812 Chestnut Road. Mrs. Penney can be reached at (712) 366-4721
or by email at penneysb@cox.net. We
would like all parents to support the students and their cast party by
helping chaperone the party, providing treats/drinks for the party or by
helping the Penney’s with clean up.
The Pizza Party will be held at 4:00-4:30 PM on Halloween night in the Middle
School Cafeteria. Mr. & Mrs. Moore
have volunteered to coordinate this activity for us. The Moore’s can be
reached at (712) 323-6177 or by email at dkksmoore@cox.net. The Moore’s can use
some help with a few desserts for our students, some soft-drinks and by
helping chaperone on the night of the party.
Schedule Change:
Friday October 5, 2007 & TECH DAY Saturday October 6, 2007
At the request of students,
we will be altering our schedule on Friday October 5, 2007 to allow many of our students who are unable to
assist in our Saturday October 6, 2007 TECH DAY to help get our ambitious set started.
We will be offering two shifts on Friday October 5, 2007. We will
begin our day at Menards at 8:00 AM to pick up much needed
supplies. One shift will be 10:00 AM-1:00 PM and we will offer another shift from 12:30-3:30 PM. We will be
following this up with a rehearsal with Mr. McLaughlin, Jessica Formanek and Caleb Housley from
4:00-6:00
PM.
TECH DAY on Saturday
October 6, 2007 will offer
three shifts: 9:30-12:30 AM;
Noon-3:00 PM & 2:30-5:30 PM. Students involved
in the production should attend one shift on each of the two tech days.
We appreciate the students
and their leadership in finding solutions in a very busy time for our
production.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Herb Gardner (December 28, 1934 - September 25, 2003) was a
commercial
artist, cartoonist, playwright, and screenwriter.
His cartoon
characters, eventually seen in the comic strip The Nebbishes,
largely forgotten now, were a huge hit in the 1950s and a mainstay of
office wall decorations.
He is best known for
his 1962 play A Thousand Clowns,
which ran for two years. He received an Oscar nomination for the screenplay
for the successful 1965 movie adaptation. The play was revived in 1996 and
2001. Both the 1962 play and the movie starred Jason Robards, Jr. as Murray
Burns, a charming, out-of-work writer with Peter Pan syndrome. He is forced
to choose between social conformity and the probable loss of custody of his
eleven-year-old son. The Robards character was in part based on Gardner's friend at that time, humorist Jean Shepherd.
Gardner's biggest
commercial success was the 1985 play I'm Not Rappaport,
which ran for two years, won the Tony Award for "Best
Play," and became a 1996 movie.
Other plays included The Goodbye People (1968), Thieves (1974), and Conversations with my Father (1992).
He was screenwriter
and co-producer of the 1971 motion picture Who Is Harry Kellerman,
and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?
which starred Dustin Hoffman.
He made a brief screen
appearance as Rabbi Pierce in the 1987 motion picture Ishtar.
