We Are Empowered and Sent Forth
Small businesses and large corporations have something in common: they
all need the efforts of people from many kinds of backgrounds to carry
out what they do. When a critical set of skills is missing, the
organization becomes more at risk. Think of a company with skills in
manufacturing parts, but has no finance department to keep track of its
income and expenses.
Dioceses and parishes have similar people needs to carry out what they
are doing and would like to do. Take St. Monica for example. We need
Fr. Tim as our spiritual leader to celebrate Mass as well as the
ultimate decision maker about what we do as a parish.
As deacon, I assist Fr. Tim with teaching, charity, and some
sacraments, and I try to empower others to help. But, Fr. Tim and I
represent less that 0.1% of the members of our parish. If our parish is
going to function, almost everything is in your hands. You have many
gifts and they are all needed to run this parish. You may be using your
gifts in a small business or a company, so why not try putting these
same gifts, or some other expertise, to work at St. Monica? Your gifts
are what our parish is and what it has the potential of becoming.
Our readings today talk about personal gifts and empowerment to use
them. In the Gospel, Jesus wishes his disciples peace, gives them the
Holy Spirit, and then sends them forth. In the Acts of the Apostles,
the Holy Spirit empowers these disciples and they begin to speak in
tongues and proclaim the word of God in new ways they could not do
before. And, St. Paul told the Corinthians that our bodies are composed
of many parts and that all of them are required for the body to work
together correctly. As the body of Christ, each of us is needed to make
our parish work as God intends. The Holy Spirit gives us individual
gifts to help build up the body of Christ.
Jesus’ gave his disciples the Holy Spirit, but what about us? As
Catholics today, we are links in that unbroken chain that goes back to
Jesus through his original disciples. Through the Church, we eventually
receive the Holy Spirit at baptism and confirmation. Through the Holy
Spirit, we have all been given “different kinds of spiritual gifts,”
through which we can perform “different forms of service” “for some
benefit.”
Our challenge is to answer the question: Are we active parts of the
Body of Christ? If not, the body of Christ is not working as well as it
could. If not, our parish is not doing all that Christ calls it to do.
St. Monica has all of the ministerial needs of an average parish. These
ministries require the help of all of us to make them more complete.
For example, obvious liturgical ministries consist of serving as
usher-greeters, singing or playing music in the choir, being an altar
server, proclaiming the scriptures, and distributing Communion. The
parish also has ministries of social justice, religious education,
finances, and reaching out to those seeking a spiritual home.
Our parish also has some unique ministerial needs such as cleaning the
buildings and maintaining the grounds.
What could we become if more of our spiritual gifts were activated and
put to use on a regular basis?
We might be able to start a school sooner. Our choirs would be full of
singers and instrument players, and we’d have a leader of the Bell
Choir. We would have ample people to help teach religious education and
we would have an education building for the classes. We might even have
a program to extend religious education into our homes. With a free
clinic, we could serve the needs of people in our local area. More
parishioners would belong to a small Christian community, which would
help them build up the larger parish community.
Each of you has spiritual gifts. There are methods to help us determine
these gifts, which change as we mature. You will find a self-assessment
package on the round table in the Narthex. Take one copy home for your
family and answer the questions, then pray about answering God’s call
to use your gifts. Next, call the parish office to talk to someone
about how your gifts might be put into practice.
In the gospel reading, Jesus says, “Peace be with you! As the Father
has sent me, so I send you.” We are reminded of this at the end of each
Mass when we are sent forth with the words, “Go in peace to love and
serve the Lord.

Somos Habilitados y Mandados Hacia
Adelante
Negocios pequeños y grandes corporaciones tienen algo en
común: todos necesitan los esfuerzos de gente de toda clase de
antecedentes para llevar a cabo los trabajos. La organización se
pone en riesgo cuando un grupo de habilidades falta. Piensen en
una compañía que fabrica piezas industriales, pero que no
tiene departamento de finanzas para encargarse del ingreso de ganancias
y gastos.
Diócesis y parroquias tienen necesidades de personas que lleven
a cabo cuales cosas se hacen y las cuales les gustaría hacer.
Por ejemplo nuestra iglesia Santa Mónica. Lo necesitamos al
Padre Tim como nuestro guía espiritual para celebrar Misas al
igual para hacer decisiones sobre lo que se va a hacer como
parroquia.
Yo como Diácono, ayudo al Padre Tim con la enseñanza,
caridad y algunos sacramentos y trato de habilitar a otros para ayudar.
Pero, el Padre Tim y yo representamos el punto uno por ciento de los
feligreses de la iglesia. Si nuestra parroquia va a continuar
funcionando, casi todo está en manos de ustedes.
Todos ustedes tienen muchas facultades y todas ellas son necesarias
para que marche efectivamente esta parroquia. Ustedes puede ser que
esten usando sus talentos en pequeños negocios o en una
compañía. ¿Por qué no tratan de usar estos
talentos u otro conocimiento, para trabajar para Santa Mónica?
Sus talentos son lo que hacen nuestra parroquia y el potencial que
tiene de ser.
Nuestras lecturas de hoy día hablan de los talentos personales y
nuestra habilidad de como usarlos. En el Evangelio, Jesús
le desea a sus discípulos paz, les da el Espíritu
Santo y los manda hacia adelante. En los Hechos de los
Apóstoles, el Espíritu Santo habilita a estos
discípulos y ellos empiezan a hablar en lenguas y a proclamar la
palabra de Dios de diferentes maneras. San Pablo les dijo a
los Corintios que nuestros cuerpos están hechos de muchas partes
y que todos ellos son requeridos para que el cuerpo funcione
correctamente. Como el cuerpo de Cristo, cada uno de nosotros
somos necesarios para que nuestra parroquia funcione como Dios
quiere. El Espíritu Santo nos da talentos individuales
para ayudar a construir el cuerpo de Cristo.
Jesús dio a sus discípulos el Espíritu Santo.
¿Y nosotros? Hoy en día, como Católicos, somos
eslabones en aquella cadena completa que regresa a
Jesús a través de sus discípulos originales.
A través de la Iglesia, nosotros eventualmente recibimos al
Espíritu Santo en el bautismo y confirmación. A
través del Espíritu Santo, hemos recibido dones
espirituales con los cuales podemos ejecutar "diferentes formas de
servicios" para algún beneficio.
Nuestro desafío es responder a ésta pregunta:
¿Somos parte activa del Cuerpo de Cristo? Si no lo somos, el
cuerpo de Cristo no funciona tan bien como pudiese. Si no,
nuestra parroquia no está haciendo todo lo que Cristo nos
invita a hacer.
Santa Mónica tiene todas las necesidades de ministerio de
cualquier otra parroquia. Estos ministerios requieren la ayuda de
todos nosotros para ser mas de lo que son. Por ejemplo, los ministerios
de liturgia consisten de servir como saludador, acomodador, cantor o
músico en el coro, el ser monaguillo, proclamar las escrituras y
distribuir comunión. La parroquia tiene un ministerio de
justicia social, educación religiosa, finanzas, y dar la mano a
aquellos quieren necesitan un hogar espiritual.
Nuestra parroquia también tiene necesidades ministeriales como
la limpieza de los edificios y la mantención de los jardines.
¿Qué podríamos ser si nuestros dones espirituales
fuesen activados y los pondriamos a uso regularmente?
Podríamos profundizar la fe de nuestra comunidad con programas
de educación religiosa para adultos y niños.
Ofreceríamos clases de Inglés para aquellos quienes
inmigran a nuestra área. Algunas otras personas
organizarían fiestas para celebrar la vida. Una clínica
gratis podría servir a aquellos quienes tuviesen necesidad de un
médico al igual que necesidades materiales y aconsejar
sobre violencia doméstica y abuso del alcohol.
Celebraríamos mas matrimonios en nuestra iglesia. Ministros de
liturgia ayudarían con la Misa, quinceañeras y con la
Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Empezaríamos
Comunidades Eclesiales de Base.
Cada uno de nosotros poseemos dones espirituales. Hay métodos
para ayudarnos a determinar esto dones que cambian con nuestra
madurez. Encontrarán paquetes de auto-evaluación al
entrar a la iglesia. Lleven uno a sus casa y contesten las preguntas,
después oren a Dios para que el les ayude a responder a su
llamado de como usar sus dones. Luego, llamen a la oficina de la
parroquia para conversar con alguien de como pueden poner estos dones a
la práctica.
En el Santo Evangelio, Jesús nos dice, "la paz sea contigo!
Así como el Padre me ha mandado, yo te mando." Nos hace acuerdo
al final de cada Misa cuando somos mandado hacia adelante con estas
palabras, "Vayan en paz para amar y servir al Señor.
