Notes for RICHARD HILTON:

Taken from "The Samuel Jones Family", Book Two by Hazel Parker Jones

"The Hiltons came in great numbers from England to all parts of the  American Colonies. (Because of the way the name was pronounced, mostrecords spell it as Helton.)  It has been said that Richard HiIton, the ancestor of all Hiltons of Chesterfield, Lancaster and Kershaw counties, S. C.,was born in Pennsylvania about 1720. (one says 1710).'  When three of those descendants, Isaac, John and William Hilton joined the American Revolutionary forces, 1 July 1775, they gave the following information:

No.      Name              Date of Commission    Age               Born                  Size

17  Isaac Hilton           1 July 1775                 31              Va.             5 ft. 8 in.

18 John Hilton              1 July 1775                 16              S.C.            5 ft. 8 in.

19 William Hilton          1 July 1775                 23              Va.             5 ft. 8 in.

This would have placed the Richard Hilton family in Virginia in l752 and in South Carolina in 1759.

Squire Rugeley had a store ,,, his home at the fork of Flat Rock and  Granny's Quarter Creeks, between Kershaw and Camden, S. C. about 13 miles from Camden, and the old store Iedger contains the name of Hilton, and other familiar names. This spot was then called Claremont by Rugeley.
