bullet Isaiah Gorby(29) was born on 18 MAR 1846. He died on 29 APR 1850. He was buried in Buried in Benton Ridge Cemetery, Blanchard Twp, Hancock Co, OH. Parents: Jacob Gorby and Maria Frederickson.

bullet Jacob Gorby(29) was born on 9 AUG 1823 in Columbiana Co., OH. He died on 21 JAN 1901 in Rawson, Hancock Co., OH. (1978) Jacob Gorby went with his parents to Stark Co, OH and from there,
while still a young boy, to Hancock Co where he spent the rest of his
life.

Jacob was a farmer, a man of quite an accumulative ability. He lived
very conservatively, although he was very charitable to any who needed
help, and a liberal supporter of his church. For many years he was a
member of the United Brethren Church, but in later years he united with
the Methodist denomination.

(1936) Jacob was drafted during the Civil War, but at the time he had
several small children, so he paid a Mr Baker to go in his place. Mr
Baker was killed in battle. Jacob often spoke of this, saying "He died
for me.", always with a feeling of sadness.

His farm was near the town of Rawson, Hancock Co, OH, and the last 17
years of his life he lived retired in Rawson. In his home and community
life he was always pleasant, agreeable and lovable.

Following is an obituary written by Mr Gorby's Pastor, S W Scott:

"Jacob Gorby was born in Columbiana Co, OH, August 9, 1823, departed this
life January 21, 1901, at his home in Rawson, OH, age 77 yr, 5 mo, 12
da. He was converted at the age of 16 or 17 years, spending more than 60
years of his life in the service of his Master whom he followed until the
last moments of his life on earth. He, with his mother and sister, came
to this county when he was 14 years of age, and settled on the creek bank
now occupied by the Henry Deeds family.
At the age of 21 years he married Maria Frederickson, later he married
Mercy Lydia Smith. To the two unions were born 10 children, six of whom
survive him. He had three brothers and six sisters, all of them
preceding him in death except one brother who still survives at the age
of 71 years.
He was affectionate and always had a kind word for all with whom he came
in contact. He will be greatly missed, not only in the home, but in the
church, for in all the services of the church his seat was seldom vacant.
The funeral service was held in the Rawson M E Church on Wednesday at
10am, January 23, 1901, conducted by the pastor. Revs Green and Reading,
former pastors, were present and made reference to the pleasant and happy
experiences they had enjoyed with Father Gorby during their pastorates.
Also the Revs S S Woodruff and Hicks of the U B Church were present and
made some very appropriate remarks for the occasion. There was a large
attendance at the funeral. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery
west of Benton Ridge to await the Resurrection morn."

This is the Benton Ridge Cemetery, Blanchard Twp, Hancock Co, OH. Parents: Jonathon Gorby and Nancy Ann Davis.

He was married to Maria Frederickson on 2 MAY 1844. Children were: Isaiah Gorby, Eli Gorby , Cyrus Gorby, Levi Gorby .

He was married to Mercy Lydia Smith on 7 APR 1859 in Hancock Co, OH. Children were: Sarah Elizabeth Gorby, Lewis Gorby, Horace Finton Gorby, Mary Gorby, Martha Gorby, Eliza Gorby.

bullet Jacob Gorby(29) was born on 29 SEP 1808 in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle Co., DE. He died in 1893 in Salem Center, Meigs Co., OH. He was buried in 1893 in Buried at Point Pleasant Cemetery, Salem Center, Meigs Co, OH. (1936) Jacob Gorby, after marrying Ann Huston, moved with his wife to
Salem Center, Meigs Co, OH. He, like his father, was a farmer and a
stonemason and was known as "Stonemason Jake".

Jacob sent four sons to fight for the Union - Samuel Pierce, John S,
Benjamin Franklin and William H, the latter losing his life in service.

bullet Jacob A Gorby(29) was born on 26 FEB 1887 in Rawson, Hancock Co., OH. He resided in 1936 in Medford, OR (33 Modoc Ave.). He died on 13 APR 1949 in Medford, OR. Ref: ARG1-1.1.99 - This source states Jacob Gorby died at age 64.

Ref: Bluffton News Obit, Thursday April 21, 1949, pg 1-7.16.99
"Jacob Gorby, Former Resident, Succumbs
Jacob Gorby, 62, formerly of Bluffton, died on Wednesday of last week at
his home in Meford, OR, according to word received here. Death followed
a several month's illness. He was the son of Mrs Chloe Heckathorn of
this place who died about twelve years ago. The family formerly resided
on Grove street in what is now the Charles Lora property.
Jacob left Bluffton in 1904 to work for the Buckeye Pipe Line company in
the telegraph department of the Lima office. He later went to the
American Telephone & Telegraph company in 1910 and after working in
Cleveland, Maumee, Terre Haute and North Platte, he transferred to the
Pacific Telephone & Telegraph company in 1920 and has been employed there
since that time.
He was born in Rawson, February 26, 1887. His parents were Lewis and
Chloe (Reid) Gorby. He visited here in 1934 and later attended the Gorby
family reunion in Findlay in 1948.
Surviving are his wife Anne of Medford; son William of New York City,
three brothers Charles of Bay Village, OH, Earl Heckathorn of Delphi, IN,
Royal Heckathorn of North Baltimore and a foster sister, Mrs Bertha
Newman of Washington, DC." Parents: Lewis Gorby and Chloe Reed.

He was married to Leola Anne McCabe. Children were: Earl William Gorby , Another Gorby.

bullet James Allen Gorby(29) Parents: Norman O Gorby and Alice Robinson.

bullet Jerome Alan Gorby (Private). Parents: Charles George Gorby and Esther Mae Greding.

He was married to Hannah Durham in 1955. Children were: Cheryl Gorby , Kimberly Gorby, Beverly Gorby.

bullet Jesse Gorby(29) was born in 1789 in Washington Co., PA. (1936) Jesse Gorby was born in Washington Co, PA, in1789, as records
show that his father, Thomas Gorby, bought land in that county in 1788.
Jesse moved with his parents to Ohio Co, VA, some time after 1802. He
married a Miss Wade, her first name has not been learned. He resided at
Bellton, now Marshall Co, WV, where he conducted a successful farming and
milling business.

Jesse lived about three miles from his brother, Eli, who was buried in an
old cemetery, once called Gorby Cemetery, at the mouth of Rocky Run on
Fish Creek, so he is probably buried there too.

Four of Jesse Gorby's sons also married girls named Wade. Seldom, if
ever, have a father and four sons married wives of the same name.

Jesse Gorby's great-granddaughter Mary Jane Gorby married Daniel L Gorby
a grandson of his brother Eli Gorby.

Ref: CEN1850-7.23.99 - On this census, granddaughter Melissa Gorby was
living with the family. Parents: Thomas Gorby and Elizabeth Allman.

bullet Job Gorby(29) was born about 1760 in Chester Co., PA. He died in 1841 in Hiramsburg, OH. (1936) Job Gorby was the eldest child of Thomas and Elizabeth (Allman)
Gorby. He was born between 1760 and 1770, probably in Chester Co, PA,
evidently several years older than the next child. The census records of
1790 lists him as one of the "males over 16" in Thomas Gorby's family.

Records show him in Westmoreland Co, PA in 1783, in Fayette Co, PA in
1785, in Washington Co, PA in 1788, and in Greene Co, PA in 1798.
Sometime later he moved to Ohio Co, then Virginia, and his homestead is
still standing in or near Majorsville, WV, near the Greene Co, PA line.

Courthouse records show Job Gorby owning land in Washington Co and Greene
Co, PA, in Ohio Co, VA, and in Noble Co, OH. According to these records,
he did much buying and selling of land. There are records of a few
forced sales. As late as 1815 he was still owning land in Washington Co
and Greene Co, PA, but had moved to VA before 1804, as his son Thomas was
born in VA in 1804.

On September 23, 1816, he settled on a farm near Hiramsburg, Noble Co,
OH, where he lived until his death. On September 23 and 24, 1916, a
reunion of his descendants was held on this farm, celebrating the one
hundredth anniversary of his settling there. Over three hundred
descendants attended.

The home which Job Gorby built on this farm is not standing, but at his
death his son David bought the farm, and the red brick house which he
built is still standing. The farm is now owned by strangers.

Some time before 1793, Job Gorby married Hanna Richmond. At the time of
their marriage, her family lived in Washington Co, PA, not far from West
Alexander.

According to some of the older Gorbys of the fourth and fifth
generations, Job Gorby served as a scout in the War of 1812 and he is
listed as a member of the Frontier Rangers from Washington Co, PA in 1792.

Job Gorby and Hannah (Richmond) Gorby are both buried in an old cemetery
on top of a hill near Coal Ridge, OH, on the Cambridge-Marietta highway.

Three of Job Gorby's great-grandsons, through Hannah (Gorby) Mason,
married three of his sister Hannah (Gorby) Parson's
great-granddaughters: Robert Spencer Lee McKimmie m. Isadore Parsons,
Webster McKimmie m. Henrietta Parsons and John McKimmie m. Margaret Jane
Parsons.

Ref: VST1 - From book Westward of Ye Laurall Hills, 1750-1850 by Helen
Voght. In August 1794, surveyor John Hoge wrote a receipt to Job Gorby
for his "setting of 50 pannels post and rail fence." Parents: Thomas Gorby and Elizabeth Allman.

He was married to Hannah Richmond before 1793 in Washington Co., PA. Children were: Eli Gorby, Levi Gorby, Elizabeth Gorby, Hannah Gorby, Eli Gorby, John Gorby, Thomas Gorby, Levi Gorby, Martha Gorby, David Gorby, Nancy Gorby, Rachel Gorby.

bullet John Gorby(29) was born before 1784. He died in 1837. (1936) It has not been learned if whether John Gorby was the son of Mary
Loan, or of Hannah Stilley. (1999) John was a son of Hannah Stilley and
Joseph generation III.

Parmelia Gorby Hawk, granddaughter of Samuel, son of Joseph, mentions him
as brother of Samuel, and he is listed in the Delaware archives as being
a member of the State Militia, 1809, together with his brothers Samuel
and Joseph. Nothing further is known of him.

However, in Washington Co, PA, there is listed the marriage of one John
Gorby, to Elizabeth Hirson on August 23, 1813. This was recorded in an
old Squire's book from West Alexander. Another John Gorby, son of
II-Thomas, was married in that county in 1813, but to Elizabeth Barnett.
Whether there has been a mistake in transcribing the name, or whether it
could have been John, son of II-Joseph, has not yet been discovered.
Joseph had been in Washington Co and bought 400 acres of land, which he
immediately sold to his nephew Job Gorby, and returned to Delaware. So
his son John might have been in that county later, and married there.

(1997) From "History of Chester County, Pennsylvania with Genealogical
and Biographical Sketches" by Futhey & Cope: p 126 - There is a John
Gorby listed which is in the history section. On that page are Muster
Rolls for 1812 & 1814.

Ref: CEN1810 - Living in Brandywine Hundred, DE. Listed is one male age
26-44 and one female age 26-44.

Ref: GWG1-7.16.99 - John Gorby's will was written by him on July 25, 1837
and was registered in New Castle September 23, 1837. Winesses to his
signing were Owens Zebley and Thomas W Zebley. In the will he left the
balance of his estate to his wife Isabella. The probate documents spell
his name alternately 'Gorby' and 'Gorbey'. Parents: Joseph Gorby and Hannah Stilley.

bullet John Gorby(29) was born in 1802 in Greene Co., PA or Ohio Co., VA. (1936) John and Rebecca (Clark) Gorby were 1st cousins. They had 2 sons
die in infancy, and they both died quite young.

(1978) These sons were named Alfred and Eli. Parents: Job Gorby and Hannah Richmond.

bullet John Gorby(29) was born on 11 JUN 1816 in Columbiana Co., OH. He died on 7 APR 1902 in Columbiana Co., OH. He was buried in Buried in Mt Zion Methodist Cemetery, Middleton Twp, Columbiana Co, OH. Ref: BK11 - According to this source John Gorby was born June 11, 1815.

Ref: CEN1880 - This source also lists a grandson, William A Gorby, age 9
living with the John Gorby's family. His parents were Levi Gorby and
Emeline Ward.

Ref: CEN1900 - Was living alone. Parents: Samuel George Gorby and Ann Pierce.

bullet John Gorby(29) Parents: Samuel Gorby.

bullet John Charles Gorby(29) was born in 1949. He died in 1985. He resided in Greensburg, PA. Ref: ARG1-1.1.99 Parents: Norman O Gorby and Alice Robinson.

He was married to Susan Weirs in 1971. Children were: Patricia Gorby, John Ryan Gorby.

bullet John G Gorby(29) was born on 25 MAY 1792 in Washington Co., PA. He died on 19 FEB 1848. (393) He was buried in Marshall Co., WV (Bowman Ridge M E Church Cemetery). (1936) John G Gorby was probably born in Washington Co, PA, as his
father bought land in that county in 1788 and did not move to Greene Co,
PA until later in the 1790s. The last record of Thomas Gorby in Greene
Co is in 1802, so sometime after that John moved with his parents to Ohio
Co, VA. Later he must have returned to Pennsylvania, for he served in
the War of 1812 from that state.

About 1813 he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Barnett. On August 23, 1813, a
marriage license was issued in Washington Co, PA to a John Gorby and
Elizabeth Hirson. The wedding took place at West Alexander, and is
recorded in an old Squire's book, now owned by the Pennsylvania
Historical Society, Washington, PA. In changing records there may have
been a mistake in copying the name. The only other explanation would be
that this John Gorby was Joseph's son John, but there is no record of his
ever having been in Pennsylvania with his father.

Later John G Gorby moved to Ohio Co, VA, where, after the death of his
father, he managed the "plantation and the mill" which his father willed
him, later selling it, and in 1835 be bought 200 acres of land from the
man having the original patent - a Mr Wood. This land is about 10 miles
out of Moundsville, WV, on Bowman Ridge and on Little Graves Creek, near
Rosby's Rock, Marshall Co, WV.

The first religious society in this community was formed at John Gorby's
home and church services were held there until a church was built. He
donated a part of the farm to the society for a church and burial
ground. This is now known as the Bowman Ridge M E Church. E G Gorby, a
grandson of John, has been a trustee of this church for 45 years. There
is also mention of John Gorby's name on a church committee while living
in Pennsylvania.

John willed his farm to his wife for her lifetime, then his son Ezekiel
bought out the other heirs. The farm is now owned by Ezekiel Grant Gorby
and heirs of his brother, William Porter Sheridan Gorby, Grant is living
on it. The original "plantation" mentioned in Thomas Gorby's will has
not yet been located.

John G Gorby died February 19, 1848 (one date is given as December 23).
He and his wife are buried in the Bowman Ridge M E Church Cemetery, which
they donated to the church. Parents: Thomas Gorby and Elizabeth Allman.

bullet John Ryan Gorby (Private). Parents: John Charles Gorby and Susan Weirs.

bullet John Slathial Gorby(29) was born on 1 JUL 1845 in Salem Center, Meigs Co., OH. He died on 10 NOV 1933 in Peru, Chatauqua Co., KS. He was buried in Buried in Greenwood Cemetery, east edge of Sedan, KS. (1936) John S Gorby served with Co I, 53rd Ohio Reg during the Civil
War. He died at the home of his daughter - Ella (Gorby) Mitchell.

Ref: BK07 - Was a Corporal in 53rd Ohio Reg.

Ref: BK08 - John S Gorby first settled in Chetopa, KS. He became ill
there from water. Early in 1870 went to Peru and stayed with the Patrick
Looby family west of town.

He was a farmer and carpenter. He owned 80 acres west of Peru, known as
the
Gorby farm. He helped build the Oakland schoolhouse. Worked on some of
the
buildings at the Indian Nation in Pawhuska, OK.
Parents: Jacob Gorby and Ann Huston.

bullet Jonathon Gorby(29) was born after 1782 in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle Co., DE. He died in 1855 in Gallia Co., OH. (1978) Jonathon Gorby was born at the old Joseph Gorby homestead, still
standing in Claymont, DE in 1936. His brother Samuel had gone from
Delaware to Columbiana Co, OH to settle. In 1814 he gave Jonathon 60
acres of this land as a start for his family, and most of his children
were born in OH. Later he sold this land and moved to Stark Co, OH. Here
his wife's health failed and she moved to Hancock Co, OH to be with her
daughter Hannah Gorby Garty, died there in 1841 and is buried on that
farm as is Hannah and Cyrus Garty. The farm is in Union Twp, Hancock Co,
OH and is called Deeds Farm.

During her mother's illness, Julia Ann, their 11 year old daughter, kept
house for her father. Later he moved to Portage Co, OH and later to
Gallia Co, OH where he spent the rest of his life. His death in 1855 was
tragic. While felling a tree, trying to warn an approaching wagon, the
tree fell, striking and killing him. He is probably buried near there.

Jonathon Gorby was a man of small stature, and so light and quick on his
feet that they used to say he could walk from his home in Portage Co to
see his ailing wife in Hancock Co on muddy roads and get only the soles
of his boots wet.

Jonathan was a good farmer and a very industrious and honest man. Much
of his earliest history was given by James Gorby of near E Palestine, OH,
a grandson of Samuel. Later history came from four great-grand daughters
of Jonathon - Mrs Belle Gorby Coler, Mrs Estella Gorby Swinehart, Mrs
Ethel Gorby Walter and Mrs Florence Kelly DeWese.

(1997) Jonathon's will was probated in Portage Co, OH in 1848, casting
doubt that he lived until 1855.

bullet Joseph Gorby(29) was born in 1749. He died between 1820 and 1829. (1936) Joseph Gorby was married, but the name of his wife is not
known. He is listed in the Delaware Militia in 1800 and 1809. Nothing
further is known of him except the name of one son - Joseph Richard,
evidently named for his father or himself and for his brother Richard.
This leads one to think that Richard must have been an own brother,
therefore a son of Mary Loan.

(1999) Based on DE Census data, this is the Joseph Gorby who married
Hannah Stilley. The Joseph Gorby listed in the Delaware Militia would
be his and Hannah's son Joseph.

From "Reconstructed Delaware State Census 1782" by Harold B Hancock, in
Brandywine Hundred Newcastle Co, DE, listed October 20, 1782:
Joseph Gorby houshold - 1 Male over 18, 1 Female over 18, 3 Males under
18, 1 Female under 18.

Ref: CEN1800 - Joseph Gorby living in Brandywine Hundred, DE. Living in
his household is one male less than 10 years of age, one male age 10-16,
three males age 16-25, one male age 45+, two females age 10-16, one
female age 45+.
This indicates one son born after 1790 (Joseph Richard), one son born
between 1783-1790

Ref: CEN1810 - Living in Brandywine Hundred, DE are five families of
Gorbys. There are Joseph Sr, Samuel, Joseph, John and Jonathon. Joseph
Sr is the only one listed as 45+ years old. The other Gorbys are all
listed as being 26-44 in age. If accurate, that would mean that none
were born prior to 1766 and all are probably sons of Hannah Stilley.
The Joseph Sr listing contains one male age 16-25, one male age 45+, one
female age less than 10, one female age 26-44 and one female age 45+.
The Joseph listing contains one male 26-44, three females under age 10,
one female age 26-44.

Ref: CEN1820 - Living in Brandywine Hundred, DE is the family of Joseph
Gorby with only one male and one female age 45+ as members.
A second Joseph Gorby family is listed with two males under age 10, one
male age 10-15, one male age 26-44, one female age 10-15 and one female
age 16-25.
Parents: Joseph Gorby and Maria Littlejohn.

He was married to Hannah Stilley on 20 DEC 1770 in Wilmington, DE (Holy Trinity (Old Swede's Church)). Children were: Samuel George Gorby, Mary Gorby, Jonathon Gorby, John Gorby, Lenah Gorby, Joseph Gorby, Richard Gorby.

bullet Joseph Gorby(29) was born before 1790. Ref: GWG1-7.16.99 - Originally listed in the 1936 Book as Joseph Richard
Gorby, son of Joseph generation II and Mary Littlejohn/Stidham/Loan,
census data indicates that Joseph and Richard were both sons of Joseph
generation III and Hannah Stilley. Census data also indicates that
Joseph was born prior to 1790, and Richard was born after 1790, so this
individual has been renamed 'Joseph' generation IV. This census data is
listed under Joseph generation III.

Ref: CEN1820 - Two Joseph Gorbys listed. The second Joseph Gorby family
is listed with two males under age 10, one male age 10-15, one male age
26-44, one female age 10-15 and one female age 16-25.

Ref: CEN1830 - Living in Brandywine Hundred, DE is the family of Joseph
Gorby listed with one male age 5-10, one male age 40-50, one female age
50-60 and one female age 80-90. Parents: Joseph Gorby and Hannah Stilley.

bullet Joseph Gorby(29) was born about 1725 in Chester Co., PA. He was baptized on 25 OCT 1751 in Wilmington, DE (Holy Trinity (Old Swede's Church)). He Spouse in Wilmington, DE (Marriage recorded in Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church). (1936) Joseph Gorby was born about 1725 in Chester Co, PA, married first
Mary Loan on February 26, 1745, and second Hannah Stilley on December 20,
1770. Records of both marriages are found in Holy Trinity (Old Swedes)
Church in Wilmington, DE, pages 392 and 733 of the marriage records.

In 1774 we find Joseph on the tax list of Bethel, Chester Co, PA, and on
June 3, 1795 he purchased from the Government 400 acres if land in
Washington Co, PA, which he sold on the day of the survey to his nephew
Job Gorby. But during this time he must have been living near Claymont,
DE, for the descendants of Joseph claim that both Mary Loan and Hannah
Stilley lived in the old home there which he built after leaving Chester
Co, PA.

Belle Gorby Collins (4th generation), claimed that this farm once
belonged to her great-grandmother Gorby, which would be Mary (May) Gorby,
and that would mean that she outlived Samuel, and that they moved from
Chester Co, PA to Delaware. (1997 Note: As Belle's father Richard was
not born until about 1811, her great-grandmother was most likely Hannah
Stilley.)

This home is still standing and still owned and occupied by descendants
of Joseph and Hannah Stilley Gorby through their daughter Lena, who
married Joseph Pierce. Her grandson, George M Casey now owns it. (1997
Note: The house is still standing and is owned by a great-grandson of
George M Casey, James Rambo and his wife Linda.)

(1978) Research by Lyn Black before 1978 disclosed that Joseph was on
the 1790 tax lists, also the in the Census, of Brandywine Hundred, New
Castle County, DE. And in Sussex County (lower third of DE), on the 1790
tax lists were the following names, but the last name was spelled
"Gordy": Jackson, Jacob, John, Joshua, Benjamin and Eli. (1999 Note:
The Sussex Co, DE Gordys are no relation to the Gorbys as they are
ancestors of President Jimmy Carter and have been thoroughly researched
as a result of that relationship.)

(1936) No record of Joseph has been found later than 1795 (1997 Note:
Two Josephs were found on the DE 1810 & 1820 Census records), so it is
not known when he and Hannah (Stilley) Gorby died nor where they are
buried, but naturally would be in or near Claymont where they had lived
so long. Joseph's will not found. Nothing is known of the families of
either Mary Loan or Hannah Stilley, but from the marriage records they
may have lived in Wilmington, DE. (1997 Note: Both Mary Loan's and Hannah
Stilley's families found. Hannah Stilley was apparantly living with her
son Joseph during the 1840 Census.)

Descendants of Joseph Gorby settled mostly in Delaware and eastern
Pennsylvania, and in and around Columbiana and Hancock Counties in
northern Ohio. It is not known to which mother his sons John, Richard
and Jacob belonged.

(1999) Census data indicates that the Joseph Gorby who married Mary
Littlejohn/Stidham/Loan is NOT the Joseph Gorby who married Hannah
Stilley, but more likely his father. It also indicates that Joseph
Richard Gorby may have been a son of Hannah Stilley as was John. The
Richard and Jacob mentioned above were not born until after 1810, so it
is likely that their father is Joseph or John, sons of Joseph and Hannah
Stilley.
