bullet Rachel Gorby(29) was born on 21 JUN 1815 in Ohio Co., VA. She died on 4 JUN 1840. (1936) Rachel Gorby grew up in Noble Co, OH, near Hiramsburg. She is
buried in the same cemetery with her parents, near Coal Ridge, OH.

The cemetery is on top of a hill and sadly neglected. Her stone, a tall,
old fashioned slab, in addition to the dates, bears the following lines:

"Remember me as you pass by,
So once was I as you are now;
So you will be as I here lie,
Prepare for death -"

The remainder was worn away. The stone was made and lettered by T
Stockwell. Nothing else has been learned concerning her or her
descendants except that she had two daughters. Parents: Job Gorby and Hannah Richmond.

bullet Raymond Orrin Gorby(29) was born on 20 JUN 1898 in Rawson, Union Twp., Hancock Co., OH. He died on 5 JAN 1933 in Rawson, Union Twp., Hancock Co., OH. He was buried in Buried at Flick Cemetery, N of Rawson. (1936) Raymond Orrin Gorby was baptized and united with the U.B. Church
at the tender age of six years. He spent his boyhood on his father's
farm E of Rawson and as his father grew older and retired from too active
life Raymond took over the entire management of the farm.

He was a good husband and father, but at an early age tragedy stepped
in. His stock truck was struck by a train and both he and his driver
lost their lives.

He was married to Roxanna Dale Hews on 23 JUL 1919 in Rawson, Union Twp., Hancock Co., OH. Children were: Inez Camilla Gorby.

bullet Rebecca Gorby(29) was born in 1772. (1932) All that is known of Rebecca Gorby is that Thomas Gorby mentioned
her in his will as "my beloved daughter Rebecca Ellit", and mentioned her
first as the oldest daughter. Whether of not the name is Elliot instead
of Ellit cannot be found, but Marion Gorby, son of John Ryan, son of Eli,
says he remembers that when he was a very small boy some relatives named
Elliot used to visit at their home, but he was too small to remember the
names or relationship. No real trace of her or her descendants has been
found, yet she was 42 years old and living at the time her father died in
1814. Parents: Thomas Gorby and Elizabeth Allman.

bullet Richard Gorby(29) was born in 1792 in Chester, PA. Ref: GWG1-7.16.99 - Originally listed in the 1936 Book as Joseph Richard
Gorby, son of Joseph generation II and Mary Littlejohn/Stidham/Loan,
census data indicates that Joseph and Richard were both sons of Joseph
generation III and Hannah Stilley. Census data also indicates that
Joseph was born prior to 1790, and Richard was born after 1790, so this
individual has been renamed 'Richard'. This census data is listed under
Joseph generation III.

(1936) Joseph Richard Gorby was probably born in Chester Co, PA. He was
a shoemaker by trade, making fine shoes for women, living in Chester, PA.

A most touching story is told of him. A creek ran between the village
where Joseph lived and a neighboring village. A dispute arose as to
which village should pay for the building of a bridge across the stream.
These villages were in Delaware. It was finally agreed to gamble for it
and a friendly wrestling match was decided upon.

A wrestler was chosen from each village, and the loser's village was to
build the bridge. Joseph Richard Gorby was the wrestler chosen from his
village, and in the bout Joseph's adversary's neck was broken. This
worried and grieved Joseph so much, that in 1840, when his youngest son
Edward James was only nine years old, he left home, and they never heard
from him nor of him again.

Ref: CEN1850 - A Richard Gorby is listed in Brandywine Hundred, New
Castle Co, DE, age 55, Farmer, born in DE. He is listed with the
household of Thomas and May Batton, Farmers. This may be the same person
given the above story.
In the same census, Margaret lived in Chester, Delaware Co, PA with her
sons Robert C and James. Parents: Joseph Gorby and Hannah Stilley.

bulletSamuel Gorby(29) was born about 1700 in Manchester, England?. (1936) Little of definite information can be found concerning Samuel
Gorby. Traditions there are in plenty, but so far they seem to be all
that can be found.

One story is that Samuel Gorby married Mary May in Manchester, England,
and came directly to America, settling in Chester Co, Pennsylvania, where
he bought a home, reared a family, and fought for his country whenever
his services were needed.

Another story tells of his being kidnaped from his father's castle in
England by a stranger who was spending the night at his father's home,
and of his being brought to America.

Still another version tells of his running away from his English home
when twelve years of age and coming to America, there he was indentured,
serving until he was 21 years of age, when he then married Mary May.

But these are all traditions, and it is not known definitely how nor when
Samuel Gorby came to this country, nor where he married. But he was born
in England about 1700 and married Mary May. Nothing is known of the May
family, though there were many Mays in and around Philadelphia in those
early days and some in Delaware. Many of the Gorbys lived in Newcastle
Co, DE, across from Chester Co, PA, and many of their descendants are
still living there.

Chester County and neighboring Pennsylvania counties have been so changed
since those early days that so far it has been impossible to find records
of births, marriages, deaths, deeds, taxes, or wills, consequently no
definite records of Samuel and Mary (May) Gorby have been found.

So far the names of only three children of Samuel and Mary (May) Gorby
have been found. There may have been other children, and doubtless were,
since the births of the three known sons were so far apart, but no
records of them have ever been found. The only solution to this question
might be in the will of Samuel Gorby, but so far this will has not been
found.

But they were married no later than 1724, for their son Joseph, the
eldest of whom we have record, was born not much later than 1725 for his
first marriage was in 1745. They must have spent their lives in Chester
Co, for there is no record of them among their descendants who went into
Delaware and Western Pennsylvania.

Some of the older Gorbys of the fourth and fifth generations told of
hearing their Grandfathers say that Samuel was a physician and surgeon
and that he served in the Colonial Wars and the Revolution, a part of the
time with Washington and with Paine, a part of the time at Valley forge.
No record of his services have been found, but these reports came from
Samuel's own grandsons and should be authentic. Being quite old at the
time of the Revolution, he may have been giving his medical services at
Valley Forge when help was sorely needed and not regularly enlisted -
just helping the sick and wounded men.

Samuel and Mary (May) Gorby may be buried in Bethel Cemetery, Chester Co,
PA, for it is near Joseph's old home and many of the older Gorbys are
buried there.

(1978) The account given to Melba Gorby Beard by her father (6th
generation - George I Gorby, son of Jesse, son of William), was that "two
brothers came to America from England at a young age". While searching
through books on trans-Atlantic ships bringing immigrants from European
shores in the early 1700's, one ship had the name "Two Brothers", though
that particular book, covering limited dates, listed no passenger named
Gorby. He also said that another version was "the first Gorby came from
England as a youth, having been captured and forced onto the ship".

As to the adult Samuel, he said that "Samuel tended to the sick and
wounded during the Revolution as a doctor". So far no record of this has
been found (officer or civilian). Civilians often assisted troops in
their area, in many ways; and the places where the earliest Gorbys lived
were, the very SE corner of Pennsylvania, and the northern curve of
Delaware (Valley Forge and Brandywine).

He was married to Mary May about 1724 in Manchester, England or Chester Co., DE. Children were: Joseph Gorby, Thomas Gorby, William Gorby.

bullet Samuel George Gorby(29) was born on 10 MAR 1779 in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle Co., DE. He died on 10 JUN 1853 in Columbiana Co., OH. (1936) Samuel George Gorby married Ann Pierce on November 7, 1805. This
version states that he was 16 and she was 15, however it also states that
he was born in 1779 and she in 1790, making them 26 and 15.

Samuel did not move to Columbiana Co, OH until after 1809, as he is
listed in the Delaware State Militia in 1800 and 1809. There is also an
old buckskin deed showing that he purchased land in Brandywine Hundred,
New Castle Co, DE in 1806. So at least two of his sons were born there
in 1807 and 1808.

Samuel Gorby bought land in Section 3 of Columbiana Co, OH, the adjoining
land being bought by George Justison whose son married Lena (Gorby)
Pierce's daughter - Lena Pierce. These farms were near Negley, OH, on
Diagonal Road between Beaver Falls and Cleveland.

As well as being a good farmer, Samuel was a splendid stone-mason,
building many houses in that locality, some of them still standing and in
good condition. Because of this he is often spoken of as Samuel, the
Stonemason, or more familiarly as "Stonemason Sam".

After settling his own family in Columbiana Co, he returned to Delaware
and took his younger brother Jonathon and family to Ohio with him, and
gave Jonathon 60 acres of land to aid him in his start in a new country.

He and his wife had 14 children, all but the first and ninth living to
marry and have homes and children of their own. Several grandchildren
are still living.

(1978) Many Gorbys and Justisons are buried in Anchor Cemetery.

wife Ann, age 61, also born in DE. In their household there was a male
child, age 25, named looked to be Pierce, a son Sam'l age 20, and a
daughter Elizabeth age 4, all children born in OH.

The Family Bible once belonging to his son Joseph, stated that Joseph was
born March 2, 1811 in DE and that the family moved to Columbiana Co, OH
in the (fall?) of 1811.

War for the entire four years. He married Mary E Edmundson and they
lived in Kansas. They actually moved to Nance Co, NE where he was a

bullet Samuel Stilley Gorby(29) was born on 3 DEC 1830 in Columbiana Co., OH. He died in 1910 in Columbiana Co., OH. (1936) Samuel Stilley Gorby moved to Clay Co, IN after marrying
Elizabeth Headley, and his older children were born there, but he became
dissatisfied, sold his land, and returned to Columbiana Co, OH. A few
years later a very rich vein of coal was found on that Indiana farm, and
had Samuel Gorby stayed there he would have become a very rich man.

It was through Samuel Gorby's middle name Stilley that the editor was
able to locate this branch of the Gorbys, as none of them knew of any
ancestors back of Samuel George Gorby, 3rd generation. The family Bible
which belonged to Samuel George Gorby, only gave the middle initial S. On
asking Mr George Gorby, who owns the Bible, his father's middle name he
replied that it was Stilley.

That solved a difficult problem. Samuel George Gorby had named a son for
himself and for his own mother - Hannah Stilley Gorby, second wife of
Joseph, 2nd generation.

(1997) Samuel Stilley Gorby is buried in Anchor Valley Baptist Church
Cemetery, Columbiana Co, OH. Parents: Samuel George Gorby and Ann Pierce.

bullet Thomas Gorby(262) (29) Photo was born on 6 OCT 1818 in Columbiana Co., OH. He died on 30 NOV 1898. He was buried after 30 NOV 1898 in Randolph Twp., Portage Co., OH (Sand Hill Cemetery). (394) He has reference number LDS IGI-4/17/99, file number 456498.. From Betty Ralph on RootsWeb Ohio>Counties>Portage message board:
"History of Portage County, Ohio" published by Warner, Beers & Co., Chicago, 1885

THOMAS GORBY, farmer and stock dealer, P.O. Randolph, was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, October 6, 1818; son of Jonathan and Ann Gorby. They were natives of Delaware but immigrated to Ohio and first settled in Columbiana County about 1814; afterward when our subject was about eight years of age, they moved to Stark county, where Mrs. Gorby had the misfortune to lose her mind. She afterward recovered her former health and died in Hancock County, Ohio, in 1841. Jonathan Gorby came to this county where he remained some years, then visited Gallia County, Ohio, where he concluded to remain. He was killed by the fall of a tree in 1855. Our subject was united in marriage, September 4, 1842, with Wealthy Goss, born in this township, July 10, 1820, daughter of Davis and Hannah Goss, the former a native of Connecticut, the latter of Vermont, and who settled and remained in Randolph Township, this county, all their lives. The father died while on a visit to his son at Indianapolis, Ind., October 23, 1848. The mother departed this life ten years previously, and after her death, September 19, 1847, Davis Goss was married to Mrs. Polly Roundy, who is also deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Gorby have been six children, three of whom survive: Marietta, wife of Davis Simison; Emogene, wife of Dr. G.A. Case, of Kent, Ohio, and Emeline, wife of Herbert O. Hutson. Edmond was born March 31, 1846, died July 21, 1865. Our subject, who has been engaged in farming and dealing in stock all his life, owns about 330 acres of land, mostly improved. He has filled the office of County Commissioner and Township Assessor. His wife is a member of the Disciples Church.

From Graydon Gorby's genealogy:
(1936) Thomas Gorby was a wealthy stock farmer of Portage, Co, OH, at
one time being considered the wealthiest man in that county. He made his
money by the importation from Spain of fine Merino sheep and the breeding
of registered stock. Some rams sold from $1000.00 to $5000.00, and ewes
from $500.00 to $3000.00. During his later years, he was a banker,
president of a bank in Ravenna, OH.

In appearance, Thomas Gorby was a fine looking man, handsome, well built,
with a strong, fine, intelligent countenance.

Ref: JSM1 - Thomas administered his father's estate in Randolph, Portage
Co, OH after his death.
Ref: LDS IGI-4.17.99 - Gave marriage date. Batch number M513342. Parents: Jonathon Gorby and Nancy Ann Davis.

He was married to Wealthy Goss on 4 SEP 1842. Children were: Mariette Gorby, Emeline Gorby, Emogene Gorby, Edmund Gorby.

bullet Thomas Gorby(29) was born about 1730 in Chester Co., PA. He died on 24 MAR 1814. (1936) Thomas Gorby, born about 1730 in Chester Co, PA, is the second
son of Samuel and Mary (May) Gorby. He married Elizabeth Allman. Nothing
is known of her family. In Delaware and eastern Pennsylvania there were,
in those early days, families who used various spellings of a similar
name. - Allmond, Almond, Allmon and Allman. In one family alone the
first three spellings were used and the Allmans of the Gorby family may
have come from these families.

From the Pennsylvania Archives we find Thomas Gorby on the tax list in
Chester Co, PA in 1769; in 1783 in Rostraver Township, Westmoreland Co;
in 1785 in Washington Township, Fayette Co; and in 1788 in Washington Co
until 1798. From 1798 until 1802 he lived in Greene Co, having owned
land in each of the last four named counties. After 1802, until the time
of his death in 1814, he lived in Ohio Co, then VA, where he bought land
and conducted a successful farming and milling business. So far the
location of this farm and mill has not been found.

Thomas Gorby's will was made March 24, 1814 and filed during the May term
of court, 1814, so he died sometime between those two dates. He was
survived by his wife and nine grown children - six sons and three
daughters. The will is on file in the Wheeling courthouse.

At the present time neither the date of death of his wife, nor the burial
place of the two has been found. As was often the custom in those days,
they may have been buried on their farm.

Thomas Gorby blazed a long trail through the forests and over the rough
mountains of Pennsylvania down to Wheeling, and it took courage, force of
character, and marvelous determination of both husband and wife to
accomplish what they did. In spite of the hardships, maybe because of
them, they lived to be near 84 or 85 years of age.

The descendants of Thomas and Elizabeth (Allman) Gorby settled chiefly in
central and southern Ohio, West Virginia, and western Pennsylvania.

Ref: GWG1 - The PA Census of 1800 lists Thomas with his sons Eli and Job
as living in Findley Twp, Greene Co, PA. Parents: Samuel Gorby and Mary May.

He was married to Elizabeth Allman. Children were: Job Gorby, Rebecca Gorby, Nora Gorby , Eli Gorby, Thomas Jeahue Gorby, Hannah Etta Gorby, Ebenezer Gorby, Jesse Gorby, John G Gorby.

bullet Thomas Gorby(29) was born on 6 OCT 1804 in Majorsville, Ohio Co., VA. He died on 8 MAY 1879 in Crail Hope, Green Co., KY. (1936) As Job Gorby's old homestead, still standing, is in Majorsville,
VW, just across the line from Greene Co, PA, Thomas Gorby was probably
born there. On September 23, 1816, he settled with his parents on a farm
near Hiramsburg, Noble Co, OH, living there until 1823 when he moved to
Muskingum Co, OH. There he married Mahala Jane Glidden on January 6,
1825, later returning to Noble Co. To this union were born two sons and
three daughters, all growing to manhood and womanhood, four living to a
good old age.

On May 22, 1847, in Noble Co, OH, he married Mary Eleanor Dean. Four
sons were born, the two older ones in Noble Co, the two younger in Iowa,
near Shellsburg, for in 1851 Thomas moved his family to Iowa where some
of the Deans lived. There in 1854, the Mother and two younger sons died
in the same month from typhoid fever.

In 1858 he moved to Knox Co, MO, where he lived until after the Civil
War. Here on January 18, 1862, he married the third time to Martha A
Asbury from Green Co, KY, to which union was born one daughter.

Thomas Gorby lived in that section of Missouri that sympathized with the
South, he himself owning slaves at that time, so when war was declared he
enlisted with the Confederate army, serving for three years and seven
months, two years and five months of that time being spent in prisons at
Ft St Louis, McDowell Medical College, which was being used as a prison,
and at Alton, IL. He enlisted from Knox Co, MO, and most of his service
was in Missouri and nearby states. He rose to the rank of Colonel before
the close of the war. His three older sons also served in the Southern
army.

He was both farmer and cabinet maker, many pieces of splendidly made
furniture being highly prized by his descendants. He joined the Masonic
Order at 25, The M.E. Church at 40, and was also a member of the Sons of
Temperance, and Washingtonians. He was a man of culture and filled
judicial positions in Ohio, Missouri and Kentucky. Politically he was a
Democrat, though in his younger days he was a member of the Whig party.

After the war he moved to Crail Hope, Green Co, KY, his last wife's home,
in 1867, living there until his death and is buried there. Burial was
conducted by the Masons - the James F Keel Lodge, No 320. The minister
was a warm friend - Mr Will Sandidge.

bullet Thomas Jeahue Gorby(29) was born in 1779 in Chester Co., PA. He died in 1856 in Tyler Co., WV. (1936) Thomas Jeahue Gorby was born in 1779 or 1780, probably in
Chester, Co, PA as his father was not listed as a taxpayer in
Westmoreland Co until 1783, moving there from Chester Co. The date of
moving is not known.

He married first ? Parsons, possibly a sister of Henry Parsons, who
married Jeahue's sister Hannah, and Prudence Parsons who married
Ebenezer, his brother. Second he married Elizabeth West. They lived on
Walnut Fork of Indian Creek, Tyler Co, WV. Jeahue was one of the
pioneers of that region. He was a landowner, and also owed and operated
a water mill. He died in 1856, in Tyler Co, WV and is buried at Booker
Run.

He sent three sons to fight for the Union. John and Sarge being killed
at the battle of Bull Run, Alexander alone returning after four years of
service. The war records list all three as being sons of Elizabeth
"Nancy" West.

(1997) It is possible that Thomas Jeahue Gorby and the Jeahue Gorby who
married Nancy West are not the same persons. Ref: BLC1 states that
Jeahue Gorby was born about 1800, Washington Co, PA. It is also possible
then that Elizabeth West and Nancy West are two different individuals as
well. If Thomas Jeahue Gorby did marry Nancy West then he would have
been 34 years older than she.

about 1742 and records of Josephus Gorby (son of John, son of Job), say
William never married. No records of William have been found, but
Josephus Gorby, Sylvester Scott Gorby (son of Thomas, son of Job), and
other older Gorbys who were interested in Gorby genealogy always spoke of
Joseph and William as being brothers of Thomas. Since Josephus Gorby was
born in 1823 and knew many Gorbys of the third generations, he should be
a very good authority on early Gorby history and connections. Parents: Samuel Gorby and Mary May.

pp. 512-513 - On the original settling of Randolph Township, Portage County, Ohio.

In the spring of 1804 Salmon Ward started for the fourth time to New York, but was never afterward heard from. It is supposed that he was either drowned in the lake, having no papers about him to show his identity, or was murdered. June 13, of the same year, Ebenezer Goss left Plymouth, Conn., and came by way of Pittsburgh to Mahoning County, arriving at Canfield July 29, having been forty-six days on the road. From there he went to Atwater, and in November came to Randolph. He brought a wife and four children, and when he arrived had only $1 in money. In December Eliakim Merriman, from Wallingford, Conn., came in. He originally, in 1802, settled in Atwater, removing afterward to Suffield and thence to Randolph. July 17, 1805, Oliver Dickinson came into the township with his family and purchased the improvements made by Timothy Culver. Mr. Dickinson came from East Granville, Mass., and was one of the most useful of the early settlers. He was a blacksmith by trade and worked at first in the shop of Ebenezer Goss, who had set up business shortly after coming. There were now six families in the township, but a number of unmarried men were also here. During this year Isaac Merriman, from Connecticut, Archibald Coon, from Pennsylvania, and Abisha Chapman, son-in-law of Ebenezer Goss, came in... In the spring of 1804 Timothy Culver took out a license to deep tavern and keeping tavern in those days meant selling whisky. The Indians were large consumers of the stuff. Ebenezer Goss started and carried on the first blacksmith shop in 1804... ----------------------- From Audrey Smith's notes on the Goss Family History:
