In the book "In Search of Your German Roots" (Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc. Baltimore, MD 1987) Angus Baxter gives several reasons for German immigration to North America. According to him, the first mass entry of German colonists was in 1683 to Germantown, PA. (It totaled 13 families) German settlement really commenced with the arrival of the "Palatines" in 1709 and their settlement in the colony of New York. This Palatine applies to the people from the Palatinate area of the Rhineland, but also includes people from Baden, Byern, Elsass, Hessen, and Wurttemberg. According to Baxter, there were a number of reasons for the great migrations: poor crops, bad winters, heavy taxes, military service, religious persecution and, most of all, the devastation caused by the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) and subsequent invasions of the Rhineland by France in 1673, 1688, and 1707. The winter of 1708-09 was the worst in Europe in more than a century. The intense cold started in Oct and cont. to end of Apr-destroying the grape vines and fruit trees in SW Germany. The disaster was total and the future without hope. Contemporary accounts claimed "birds died in the air and spittle leaving the mouth was ice before it reached the ground." By 1708 the "Palatines" started to arrive in London, via Rotterdam, and in 1709 over 30,000 arrived between May and October. They went to England planning to immediately move on to PA and the Carolinas. These colonies had people talking up the good land and low taxes. William Penn paid several visits to the Rhineland and in 1681 leaflets were distributed offering land in PA at the price of 2 English pounds for 100 acres. The English government blew hot and cold on supporting this, according to Baxter. Some of the colonists objected to the large numbers of Germans. The Brits responded by also arranging for settlements to the Caribbean, England and Ireland. Immigration began to taper off towards the end of the 18th century because of the industrialization of Germany. Then, by 1818 one bad harvest followed another, the Napoleonic Wars had taken their toll and religious disputes within the Lutheran Church had led to disruptions of life. This second wave was from Bayern and Württemberg, and later from Hessen, Thüringen, and Westpreussen. The reduction of farm
size through generational sub-division aggravated things further. By 1840 all Germanic areas were contributing to the mass migration, although SW German was still highest, in part because of the family connections already established. Many settled in the US after a brief stay in Canada (Mennonite settlers, especially, had a great deal of movement backward and forwards across the unsupervised border). The two main German settlements in Canada were Ontario and Nova Scotia. According to Baxter, many German settlers in Canada maintained close family and religious ties with their relatives in PA and MD. By mid 1830's immigrants to "Berlin, Canada" were from all parts of Germany: Baden, Bayern, Hessen-Darmstadt, Elsass-Lothrington, Holstein, Mecklenburg, Württemberg, and from the German settled areas of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. No single religious group predominated. Parents: Johann Valentin Mai and Katharina Eckes.

According to the Rettig side, Heppenheim is located about 60 miles south of Frankfurt and 100 miles northeast of France. The area is near the Odenwald and has some Roman ruins and a German castle, both near Heppenheim. The Rhein River flows not far from Heppenheim. This is a wine growing region of Germany and has many "weinfests" in late summer and fall. From Karl Schienk [Schienk@aol.com] 7 Mar 1998 Beienheim is a small village near Bad Nauheim. (Bad Nauheim is famous, cause Elvis Presley served there). Beienheim belongs to the town of Reichelsheim. ZIP code 61203. It belonged to province Oberhessen in the German State of Hessen-Darmstadt. From Don Watson e-mail at dwat6911@nstar.net.
Hessen is 21,120 square kilometers in size and is bordered by the federal states of Bayern, Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz,
Nordrhein-Westfalen, Niedersachsen, and Thüringen. Its population is about 6.25 million. While breath-taking views of forests, lakes,
villages, hills, valleys, and castles are seen throughout Hessen, it was not spared the horror of day-and-night bombing during World War II,
and most of what the visitor sees has been reconstructed. Sometimes to the dismay of the visitor from the United States, (who only wants to
see castles, mountains, and forests), tall buildings occupy space in many of the larger cities, and neon and electric signs, many in English, are
also present (Frankfurt; Kassel). One cannot help but notice the contrast between the narrow streets of the villages with street signs that
explain nothing (just where is 'Brunnenweg 39' from downtown?), and the wide super highways with signs that explain everything.
In the 19th century Hesse was a large area of Germany, situated somewhat west of mid-central, and dotted by villages. It was divided into
the duchies of Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Kassel (old Casl). Today there are over 400 cities, towns, and villages in the Federal German
State of Hessen, including Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt on the Main River), which is the movie capitol; Wiesbaden (the state capitol), and
Fulda (the famous "Fulda Gap" of the cold war). Hessen is today divided into three federal administrative districts, known as
"Regierungsbezirk" (Ray-gear'-ungs-bay-zierk). These are the southern district of Darmstadt (NOT the town alone, but an entire district of
many towns); The middle district of Giessen; and the northern district of Kassel. Looking back to earlier times, we see:
"The town of Eberstadt, then called Eberstadt im Rheingau, is first mentioned in 782, when a certain Walther, along with his wife,
Williswinde, gave their entire property to the Lorsch Convent.."
This is the first recorded entry of Eberstadt in the land of the Hesse, whose earliest recorded ancestors were probably the "Chatten," a
Germanic folk in existence over 2,000 years ago. Eberstadt has since been absorbed by Darmstadt, a major city with the status of a county
(Kreisfreie Stadt, pronounced Cryes-frya Stahdt). Kreisfreie means county-free. A Landkreis (lahnd-cryes) in Germany is roughly the same
as a county in the United States. This system is employed throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. The area to the south of Frankfurt is
heavily forested, especially in the area of the Odenwald (Forest of Odes, south of Darmstadt), which leads to the famous Black Forest, and
then to the soul-stirring Alps. City-dwellers in Frankfurt are always eager to "get south" to the Odenwald and beyond. Given the opportunity,
one should not miss a drive through the Odenwald, especially the towns of Michelstadt and Buchen, with marvelous half-timbered homes,
and where souvenir shops abound!

Prior to the Augsburg Confession
(1530), the Christian Church consisted of two major branches: Roman
Catholicism in the West and Othodoxy in the East. (They broke apart in the 11th
century.) So, although many Europeans (e.g. Huss, Luther) had questioned the
practices of Rome, there was no major breakaway until 1530, when several
German noblemen (e.g. Philipp of Hessen) broke away from Rome and becoming
"Lutheran," bringing their subjects with them.
Now, as for the Mai's being regional: that is possible, of course, but bear in
mind that there were many socio-economic and political upheavals, throughout
German history, that resulted in sizeable internal migrations and population
shifts. For example, the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) had a profound impact.
The point is that some of our Mai's may be native Hessens, and some may be
native Saxons who left...let's say....the Magdeburg area to escape the
Imperial forces and Catholic control.

Hope this helps. Dave Dietrich.

In 1567, the will of the landgraf
Phillip (1509-1567), who introduced Lutheran reform to Hesse in 1526,
divided Hesse among his four sons. Hesse-Kassel to William IV,
Hesse-Marburg to Louis IV, Hesse-Rheinfels to Phillip Jr., and
Hesse-Darmstadt to George I. Hesse-Homburg was created in 1622. When the
folks at LDS entered my charts of data into their computer either they or
the computer did some shortening or abbreviating of the information.

Including Starkenburg in the location is probably unnecessary - it is a
ruined castle overlooking Heppenheim, built in 1064 and destroyed in the
Seven Years war.
