the oldest man in town, but Mrs. Noah Beans, who has been a resident of
the township since 1827, was born in October 1794, and is consequently
two years and one month older."

MAY, John Adam, a retired farmer of Taylorville, exemplified in his life and
success how important a line of endeavor agricultural work is, and what can
be accomplished by intelligent effort and experienced foresight. He was born
in Randolph Township, Portage County, Ohio, December 6, 1840, a son of Geroge
and Elizabeth (Goodyear) May. The parents were natives of Germany who came
to the United States in 1830, locating in Portage County, Ohio, where the
father farmed during the summer, and worked at his trade as a tailor at
Akron, Ohio, during the winter. He was also engaged for short time as a
tavern keeper. His death occurred in Portage County when he was ninety-seven
years old. The mother died at the age of sixty-seven years. In politics the
father was a Democrat. His religious faith was that of a Catholic.

Until he was nineteen years old John Adam May remained with his parents, and
they went to South Bend, Ind., leaving there in 1860 for Logan County IL.,
Parents: Johann Georg Mai and Elizabeth Fehr.

He was married to Ann Elizabeth GUTHIER on 4 JUN 1822 in Kirschhausen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Children were: Stillborn May, Johannes May, Margaret May, Elizabeth May, John May, Johann Jacob May, George May, Catherine B. May, Anna Catherine May, John Adam May.
