Obituary October 6, 1933 Death Claims W. S. Rhoades At Home Here Pneumonia Fatal To Prominent Farmer Wednesday William S. Rhoades, 83, prominent Franklin Twp. farmer, died at this home Wednesday night at 508 Park Ave. Death resulted from pneumonia, developing from a slight cold which the aged man contracted while working his farm. He had been ill a week. The deceased was born in Greentown, Dec. 16, 1849, but he had lived in Kent for many years. He was one of the first farmers to take up celery growing in this vicinity which has now becomr a thriving industry. Served as Justice A staunch democrat, he served his township as justice of the peace and his town as a member of the council and the board of education. Very active in Masonry, Mr. Rhoades was a member of Rockton Lodge, Kent Chapter, Akron Commandery and the Al Koran Shrine in Cleveland. Wife died in 1930 His wife preceded him in death three years ago. Five children survive: Charles of Franklin Township; I. T. of Franklin Township; Eldo od Kent; Ethel at home; and Mrs. Rose Arnold of Linesville, PA. I. T. Rhoades is a member of the board of county commissioners. Rev. Warren W. Tuttle, pastor of the Kent Congregational church will officiate at his funeral service to be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Masonic Temple. Burial will be made in Standing Rock Cemetery by E. O. Carlin. From the Cleveland Plain Dealer Oct. 10, 1913 Kent Celery and Onions Cleveland Paper Gives the Rhoades Farm a Fine Writeup (Sunday Plain Dealer) Do stories of muck farming interest you? Would you like to get away from the city, raise celery and onions and work and live in the open? It sounds interesting, doesn't it, and possibly, if sone day, you decide to get away from the crowds and live the simple life you may find that it is as interesting as it seems. Of course, in all such propositions, the success or failure depends on the farm and the farmer. In the first place, muck soil must be muck soil and not just a fair imitation--if you want the best results. Such soil is formed by ages of deposits and is well supplied with nitrogen, potassium, and phosphates, particularly the first named. Dig into soil of this kind and you find decaying vegetable matter. This decaying process, together with the admixture of water, is what has made it suitable for the raising of onion, celery, and other fegetables. W.S. Rhoades & Son have an ideal muck farm just northeast of Kent, OH. Twelve years ago, he and his sons were living at Kent and the sons got the idea that they wanted to take up some kind of farm work. the result was the purchase of the present farm at $45 an acre; and now Mr. Rhodes and one son are realizing 6 per cent on a faluation of $1,000 per acre. One son became sick some years ago and had to quit and another went into some other line. The first year the four men reised corn for "taming" purposes and it grew about twice as high as ordinary corn. Then they started in with celery and onions and the pectures show the result. Onions are strong. Anyone knows that. Incidentally, that's why they need a strong soil. They take their strength from the muck soil which, when taken care of, never seems to give out. It is the same way with the celery, which must draw an unusual amount of strength from the soil in order to grow large tender stocks. The scene at the farm the other day was inspiring, though a bit hard on the eyes, owing to the closeness of the onions. Mr. Rhodes seemed proud of his farm and his men, however, and was lad to answer questions. "How many years did you cultivate before planting to celery and onions" was asked. "We raised corn for a year and then we started with our clelry adn onions." "Do you alternate crops?" "Yes." "Does your yield increase?" "It is always good after the first crop. You see new muck is not very easy to get started right." "How many acres to you have?" "Sixty." "How many men do you employ in the winter and during the growing season?" "Two in winter, twenty in the growing season." "What is your subsoil?" "Clay and gravel." "How deep is your muck?" "Twenty-five feet." "Do you take good care of your land?" "Yes, drain it and irrigate it at the proper seasons and also do what fertilizing is necessary. After I get a new piece of ground started right, I know I can keep it in A-1 condition. I drain the land in the spring, of course, and , later in the year I send a lot of water through the underground system for some time, though I am not saying that it is the best method. Probably the ofverhead method is the best." "Do you market your onions in the fall?" "The season is from July to January." "What does it cost per year to grow celery?" "Early crop $200; later $100." "What is the size of your crop?" "One hundred and fifty large cases per acre for the early crop and seventy-five for the late crop." "What does it cost you per acre to grow onions?" "An average of $100 per acre; in come cases more and in some cases less." "How many bushels do you average per acre?" "About 800 bushels. The average many other places is 500 bushels. I have grown as high as 1,200 bushels." "Do you find a ready market for your products?" "Yes." Regarding hte last answer, something mroe might be added. Mr. Rhodes sends most of his celery and onions east. During the busy season he sends out a carload of celery a day. It took him some time to get the reght commission men down east, but he succeded in doing this and now has little or no trouble in that respect. Mr. Rhodes' greatest trouble during the twelve years of muck farming has been labor. He says there are seasons fo the year when he offers $5 a day for men and still is unable to get as many as he wants. He was married to Olive Eugenia Brittain on 16 NOV 1871 in Akron, Summit Co., OH. Children were: Charles "Charlie" Rhodes, Rosa "Rosie" Rhodes, Myrtle "Mertie" Rhodes, I. T. Rhodes, Eldo Rhodes, Ethel Rhodes. Magdalena
