Dawn remembers seeing H. D. VanCampen, her Grandfather, in his casket when she was three or four. She thought that since one of his eyes wasn't quite closed, that he might not be dead yet. (1/1/1998). Before his death, Dawn accidently locked the bedroom door and she had to get his crutches so he could get out of bed and unlock his door.

Dawn remembers that he was in the Civil War and that his wife received a pension. She thinks that the pension eventually grew to about 18.00 a month which was turned over to Charlie VanCampen to live on.

He spent his last days in the home of Charlie and Beckie VanCampen and all their six children. They all lived in a house owned by Stoughts, located in Summit County in Sherbondy Hill. Parents: Elijah VanCampen and Sally M. Crawford.

He was married to Fannie Loretta Holden in 1862.⁽⁴⁹⁴⁾ Children were: Jenny Fantashia VANCAMPEN, Charlie Theron VanCampen.

Harry Lynn VanCampen

H. Lynn VanCampen

H. Lynn VanCampen, former Ravenna insurance man, died Sunday in Sedona, Ariz.

He graduated in 1921 from Ravenna High, where he was active in sports, and for many years was in the insurance business in Ravenna. He started the State Auto Insurance Agency, now Kading's.

Mr. VanCampen also operated agencies in Kent, Akron and Sidney, Ohio, before moving in 1941 to Phoenix, Ariz., where he bought the Mayflower Motor Court. In a short time, however, he found himself back in the insurance business.

He leaves his wife, the former Myrtle Schoonover: son, Darwin of Phoenix; brother, Victor of Houston, Texas, and three sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Lois) Wise of Ravenna, Mrs. Audra Howard of Phoenix, and Mrs. Dawn Hankey of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Funeral arrangements are pending. He was buried on 12 SEP 1979 in Sedona, AZ (Sedona Memorial Park). Parents: Charlie Theron VanCampen and Alice Rebecca "Beckie" Gilcrest.

When we were discussing Fudge Van Camp, somebody asked for the information indicating that Jan Van Campen owned slaves. This comes from an abstract (fact extraction) of the will of Jan, grandfather of Peter (b.1721):

Abstract of the will of John (Jan) Van Campen of Somerset Co., N.J., made March 25 1745, proved May 3, 1745.

Debts to be paid out of bond of 100 pounds given by Wessel Brodhead. Wife, Tietje; Children, John Jun'r, eldest; Isaac; Cornelius, Heyltie, wife of Jacob DeWitt; grandchildren, John Cock, Jun'r (under 5 years), son of daughter Jannitje, deceased; John, Partris (Petrus), Heyltie, children of son Jacob, deceased, provided last three discharge bond of Everson, given by their father, Jacob van Campen and myself. Personal estate includes slaves Plato and Betty. Witnesses: Albert Low, Ari Mollinare, John Broughton.

Jenny died fairly young. She was engaged, and her fiancee went to Florida. She thinks that while in Florida he ate too many oranges and died. Parents: Harry Daniel VanCampen and Fannie Loretta Holden.

John Crawford died in the Old Soldiers Home, was a Civil War Vet.--4 years from Myrl VanCampen Holcomb, in early 70's grandmother of Rose Knapp: John, my grandfather, farmer, Civil War Veteran--served out his first enlistment and re-enlisted and re-enlisted and served till the end of the war--was shot during an argument between an officer and a Negro on a troop train enroute to Washington, D.C. to be discharged--The bullet passed through his stomach and lodged in his back. He asked the Dr. what chance he had to ever see his wife & children again and the Dr. said about 1 chance in 1000. Grandpa seid I'l take that chance. He was that sort of a man. He carried the bullet to his grave. He married Amanda Melvina Gowing whose father and mother was Curtis & Irene Gowing. Their children were M who married John Beadkey and had one daughter, Nellie--Mary who married Jim Stanton, their children were Pearl, Claude, Gladys, Johnny & Wilford--They lived at Hulabird SD. Eva who married Frank Stanton, their children--Edna, Leonard, Stella, Frank and Harold and Victor. They lived at Sheldon, IA. After the war, Gandpa & Grandma moved to IA where the rest of thier family was born: Lillian married Al Locke had 2 daughters Alice & Bernice. Frank who married Mamie Sturgeon and they had 4 children Marion, Minnie, Hazle, and Frank. Johnny, who married Nellie Bache and their children were Austin who choked to death on a coffee kernel, Delbert who died at 14 from Measles, also a baby daughter died just after Austin died, Nellie, Irene, Lillian, Bert, Earl & Minnie & Ned. Uncle Johnny & Uncle Frank moved to Montana about 1920 and Victor who married Fannie Knapp in 1903 at Springfield, SD, where Myrtle and I were born--Harry who was born at Crafton NB, and in 1908 they moved to Wall, SD whre Robert, William, Floyd & Melvina were born. All down the line we've been farmers, sort of, in partnership with God but sometimes I think the Devil sticks his fingers in. Parents: Elijah VanCampen and Sally M. Crawford.
