QUERY
I was wondering if anyone could send me in the right direction to search for where my ancestors came from. My family goes by the name Schell. It is traced back to Johannes Casper Shell B: bet 1719 and 1720 in Ettringen, Rheinland-Pfalz. He died April 10, 1805 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He came to American on September 24, 1742 on the Robert & Alice to Pennsylvania. What is the basis for believing that Johannes Casper Shell Sr was born in Germany? I came from the Johannes Casper Schell line, and live in Missouri. My Grandfather who died in 1945 always stated that we were Holland dutch, not German "dutch". Johannes Casper's great grandson who lived to be 101, and died in 1954 told me (in 1947)that Casper was a dutchman, and came from Holland. I also heard the same from other older family members. It was told in a proud way. They felt distinguished that were different from the German settlers that they lived around, and sometimes married. I am certain in my own mind that he was a Dutchman, and must have been born there. He was not just passing through Holland (from Germany). per Harvey Shell at harveydshell@compuserve.com 12/99 In response to this I wrote Lorene Eaker, my expert on the family and she replied as follows...
Rhonda: He spoke German, along with settlers from other parts of Europe. You have to remember that the folks around in Bollinger Co., MO were still fighting the 30 years war in Germany that took place in the 1600s. We had just weathered the two WWs with Germany and it distinctly was not the thing to do to be German. Most families from NC claimed to be DUTCH rather than German. The greatgrandson of Casper spoken of here that died at 101 was my husbands great-uncle by marriage and a close neighbor. We always visited him anytime we were home and saw him only a few weeks before his death. A very special person. The thing is no one can find any origins on the Shell family. Have no idea what the truth is. Lorena
One theory has it that his father was Petro Schild born ABT 1688 at Ettringen, Rheinland, Prussia. Petro married Catharina ? M: ABT 1708 at Ettringen, Rheinland, Prussia. He died 19 April 1724 at Ettringen, Rheinland, Prussia. Catharina was born ABT 1690 at Ettringen, Rheinland, Prussia. They had several children but Johannes Casper Shell was the only one who did not go by Schild. End of theory.
Any info you have on where to search would be greatly appreciated.

The Voyage
[Here, the movie "God's Frontiersmen" describe a rather severe ocean voyage. This voyage is so severe that you may think it was extremely atypical. Not true. The records left by the Palatines have similar references to bad ocean voyages, and even in the best of trips, which lasted 2 to 3 weeks; the ships were overloaded with people, the rations were short or just barely enough, the food was vermin ridden, and the water was stagnant and scummy.] The ship "Sully" set sail for PA on the 31st of May and at first was blown off course northward. The weather turned very cold and icebergs were sighted. By the 10th of Aug. the weather had turned very warm and their rations were down to 1 1/2# of bread per passenger per week. 2 weeks later, the ration was cut even further. In the next 12 days, they were reduced to 2 biscuits per week. Hunger and thirst reduced them to shadows. Many killed themselves by drinking salt water or their own urine. They were saved only by a providential rain. On Sept. 2, they finally saw land. Their journey had lasted 14 weeks or 3 1/2 months. [The film didn't bring this out, but the Palatines tell of the disembarkation process at their destination. First the ones who could pay full price were allowed to pay and get off the boat. Next the healthy ones were sold to their new masters for the full fee. Then unhealthy ones were sold at auction. This process often took several weeks. If one of the family died, the rest of the family members were held accountable for passage fees of the deceased.] However, like the Germans the Ulster men thought they had found the promised land.
Lincoln Co., NC Wills: 4/2/1804 - Caspar Shell wills to Charles Frederick Shell $50 ontronery and after that to have an equal share with brothers and sisters; Secondly to Mary Conrad, one bedstead bed, one cow and calf and a spinning wheel and then for to fall an equal share with my children (and know share upon her mothers side.) Executors:. Henry Shell and Christian Hawn (Anna's husband). Note: There is no list of heirs in th4e estate file and no known complete record found to date. By bits and pieces was can ascertain who they are.
Johannes was a farmer and a Lutheran.
Long before there were any settlements in Frederick County, parties of Germans passed through it from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to seek homes in Virginia. The principal route was over a pack horse or Indian road that crossed the present Pennsylvania counties of York and Adams to the Monocracy where it passed into Maryland. Once in Maryland, the road passed through Crampton's
Gap and crossed the Potomac at several fords. The first German settlement in Frederick County was as early as 1729 in the village of Monocracy, which was the first village beyond the lower part of Montgomery County in Western Maryland .

Zachariah Davenport and wife Eliza gave their Power of Attorney to Benjamin Shell empowering the said Shell to collect and receive sum or sums due them or coming to them from their deceased grandfather, late of Pendleton District in South Carolina of the name Henery Shell. The said Eliza claiming to be one of the heirs of said Henry.
Benjamin Shell was appointed guardian of Frederick, Solomon, William and Benjamin Whittenburg, heirs of Barbara Whittenburg to collect their share of the estate. Benjamin was a Justice of the Peace in Cape Girardeau Co., MO and a brother to Henry Shell.
Was old enough to serve in Revolutionary War.
Was confirmed at South Fork 1779.
His exact age remains unknown. Was 45+, 1800 Census.
Moved to MO 1804 with his brothers Caspar Jr., and Benjamin
Michael's Revolutionary War record can be found in American State Papers v. 2:707 where he received a grant in Missouri for his service.
Was confirmed at South Fork 1779 with brother Michael. She has to be daughter of Caspar as no grandchild would have been old enough.
No other mention in records.
No birth or confirmation records found for her.
Some think she was born Abt. 1770, but not so. Had she been, her name would have been included with the following three children.
Sharon Steel wonders if she was really Anna Catherine Gertrude (named same as her mother) and actually Gertrude b: 1766. All speculation, no proof. Had she been born between Charles Frederick and Benjamin so would not have been old enough to marry before 1790's.
Was confirmed at South Fork 1783
Some say she and Catherine are the same person, named after their mother Anna Catherine Gertrude Botts.
Caspar and Fanny moved to MO 1804 and built their home on Crooked Creek in the Revelle Community just south of Marble Hill in what is now Bollinger Co., MO. Their original home stood until a tornado destroyed it in 1938.
A copy of Caspar's will is in Cape Girardeau Co., MO Deed Books and a complete Record of the family can be found in probate records.

According to what I have found, it is Petro Schild born Abt. 1688 at Ettringen, Rheinland, Prussia.
He married Catharina ? Abt. 1708 at Ettringen, Rheinland, Prussia. He died 19 Apr 1724 at Ettringen, Rheinland, Prussia (telephone code 07243). Catharina was born Abt. 1690 at Ettringen, Rheinland, Prussia. They had several children but Johannes Casper Schell was the only one who did not go by Schild. My guess when he came to America he changed his name.Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. He is my greatgrandfather X4.
I hope this helps.

Paper work said he boarded in Rotterdam. Some say he lived in or around

shipping list. It is thought that you were 15 years of age or older to
