The village of Hegykö, Hungary (near the state of Burgenland, Austria) is where brothers Joseph, Matthew (my grandfather) and Andrew Gerschoffer emigrated from in the late 1800's they spoke Magyar (Hungarian) the same language spoken now. This would support my fathers statement his father was Austrian and mother Hungarian (from Budapest) as this was the Austro-Hugarian Empire at that time.
In the Hegyko Cemetery there is only one Gerschoffer identified on a grave marker and that is Isabella Gerschoffer the sister of my grandfather and whose married name was Szemerits. My cousin expains it this way, even though there have been several generations of Gerschoffer's born and raised in the village of Hegyko. "In the cemetery of Hegykő one can't find more Gerschoffer on the tombstones. In every 25-30 year you have to pay for the grave. If somebody don't have any relatives or descendants they'll sell the old graves again. That's the reason the few number of the old graves."
Here is the headstone of Izabella (Gerschoffer ) Szemerits and her family in the Hegykö cemetery taken 2005. This is the only Gerschoffer we have been able to locate in a Hungarian cemetery.
The neighboring village of Fertoszéplak, County Sopron, Hungary is where records pertaining to Gerschoffers were located since Hegykö had no church until about 1903. Several generations of Gerschoffers have been born and raised in the Village of Hegykö. The region of Hegykö is 26.87 square kilometers. About 1300 people live in the village now consisting of a post office, school, and kindergarten. In the first written record (1262) the name of the village was: Villa Igku (that means: saint stone). Later, in 1419 its name changed to Heiligen Stein in a charter (this is the German or Austrian name for Hegykö). In 1446 the name of the settlement in a letter was: Heghkw.
Fertohomok is a quite small village, its population has only 500 people. There is no school, the children can learn either in Hegykö or in Sopron. Between Homok and Hegykö there is a recreation area with about 400 houses.
Since 1972 there is a thermal bath in Hegykö. It is a known for it's baths in Europe, there are many visitors from Germany and from Switzerland. Hegykö and Homok pass for rich villages.
